Should we move to an open borders system?

Spain announced this week that it will allow half a million immigrants who arrived illegally to stay in the country. In the US, many on the left are calling for all immigration enforcement and deportations to be halted.

Here, the Greens support a world without borders and oppose action to prevent small boat crossings to the U.K.

Should we move to an open borders system where anyone who wants to is allowed to come to the U.K. and stay permanently?

Spain approves decree to regularise half a million undocumented migrants

Move affecting those who have been in Spain five months or more runs counter to anti-migration policies across Europe

What do you think OP?

MissAustenMadeAQuilt · 30/01/2026 16:59

The Green Party, most of the Lib Dems ans many Labour MPs believe in this so why not!

Ahmad Mulakhil, 23, and fellow Afghan Mohammad Kabir, 24, are said to have spotted the schoolgirl in a playground in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.

Kabir tried to strangle the youngster before she was repeatedly raped by Mulakhil, who took photos of the attack, jurors were told.

So no, OP.

HelpMeGetThrough · 30/01/2026 17:01

What a fantastic idea. You can put them up OP.

JonesTown · 30/01/2026 17:01

@Raquelos

Personally I am pro-immigration, so long as it is done in a legal and organised way.

I don't think we should be encouraging people to risk their lives coming illegally and those who do shouldn't be allowed to stay here.

Would everyone who rocked up get free NHS, benefits, housing etc? If so, who is paying for that? The country is in hock for trillions as it is.

MinestroneMacaroni · 30/01/2026 17:02

Good grief, no. Why do you think that’s a good idea?

FreshInks · 30/01/2026 17:02

What do you think k, OP?

This reads a bit like one of those journalist fishing posts that we get on here that later appear in the Daily Mail.

PruthePrune · 30/01/2026 17:02

No. We could be letting anyone in, we would know nothing of their background.

NotAnotherScarf · 30/01/2026 17:04

So we have a chronic housing shortage. So that green belt land has been opened up for development.
A NHS on its knees
A benefits system which is one of the most generous in Europe but being abused.
A man jailed today for attacking the woman who worked at his hotel
700,000 graduates out of work. Over 1.5 m unemployed. Many the third generation of their family to never work.

And you want to let in more economic migrants?

YouAreTheCauseOfMyHeadache · 30/01/2026 17:04

No.

MissAustenMadeAQuilt · 30/01/2026 17:04

They believe that it will make providing humanitarian assistance easier, as well as contributing to economic growth and promote a wonderful cultural melting pot.

Any possible "overcrowding" will be offset by emigration from the host country.

It's all bollocks of course but these arguments in some form or other, already doing the rounds, will gather momentum over the coming year.

Are you quite sane?

Have you any idea how many millions of people there are in the world who would prefer to live here than in war torn, badly managed, poverty stricken, homophobic, low welfare support or low-opportunity countries?

The UK voted against a lite version of this with Brexit.

I think that lengthy processing times are a major problem and ideally asylum seekers would be able to work and pay tax sooner. I presume that the current waiting period means that they are more likely to work black market jobs and be exploited.

EdithStourton · 30/01/2026 17:09

No.
Just for starters, how the hell do you deal with taxation?

5MinuteArgument · 30/01/2026 17:10

Spain has a far right anti-immigration party, Vox. For them, Christmas has come early. Expect support for them to surge.

MinestroneMacaroni · 30/01/2026 17:12

I think you need to read more than just the Guardian OP. There are horrific crimes against women and children being committed every week by men who have come into this country from countries where women and girls are treated appalling. I don’t want anymore of these men killing and raping us. We’ve got enough problems with our own men!

5MinuteArgument · 30/01/2026 17:12

If the UK had an open borders policy, our population would probably increase by several million a year, maybe 20 million extra people over 5 years.

What could possibly go wrong?
