Should we move to an open borders system?

JonesTown · 30/01/2026 16:55

Spain announced this week that it will allow half a million immigrants who arrived illegally to stay in the country. In the US, many on the left are calling for all immigration enforcement and deportations to be halted.

Here, the Greens support a world without borders and oppose action to prevent small boat crossings to the U.K.

Should we move to an open borders system where anyone who wants to is allowed to come to the U.K. and stay permanently?

Spain approves decree to regularise half a million undocumented migrants

Move affecting those who have been in Spain five months or more runs counter to anti-migration policies across Europe

The craziest post I have ever read on Mumsnet!

Hiddenhouse · 30/01/2026 17:55

Dreadful idea, how would it be funded? We haven’t enough houses to house the people already here let alone if there were no limits

Milton Friedman’s famous comment - you can’t have open borders and a welfare state, it’s not sustainable, you can have one or the other.

With regard to the situation in Spain - we don't have a 'free for all' welfare system here. If you haven't paid in to the system via tax and social security payments then there are no benefits at all, and in most areas only emergency health care.

So the many people who will try to regularise their position if this proposed amnesty gets through the Royal Decree process, will have to be self supporting or get jobs & contribute to the economy. They won't be on benefits

OnSecondThoughts · 30/01/2026 18:02

What do you mean, "move to" an open border system?

stargirl27 · 30/01/2026 17:14

We know nothing of the background of strangers who were born here either.

Don’t be wilfully ignorant of how a shared culture works

bozzabollix · 30/01/2026 18:04

Yes, mainly because I’m sick of reading comments made by Reform fanatics on social media. It’d cause most of them to explode in fury and the problem would be solved for me.

@BreakingBroken

There was an anti-ICE protest in my city this week which was campaigning for an end to all deportations.

Which city was this?

Reform/most of the electorate you mean according to the polls.

The Green Party, most of the Lib Dems ans many Labour MPs believe in this so why not!

Which Lib Dem and Labour MPs believe in open borders please?

WildFlowerBees · 30/01/2026 18:08

No.

Theonlywayicanloveyou · 30/01/2026 18:10

I am pro immigration but open borders isn’t a realistic or manageable way to be more flexible and welcoming

Its the Greens that want open borders. And legalised heroin.

Apparently young women really like the breast-whisperer, God help them.

seveneight · 30/01/2026 18:21

Name me a country if the world with open borders and genuinely unrestricted immigration OP??

It's completely unworkable.

Foggybottomblues · 30/01/2026 18:22

Many on the left have changed their tune from when they agreed with Obama that halting immigration enforcement and deportations would be 'unwise and unfair '.
They also agreed at the time that we need strong boarders ' we cannot allow people to pour into the US undetected undocumented and unchecked.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 30/01/2026 18:24

Are you for real??

Forget open borders, but legalisation of drugs is an absolute harm reducer (and it will reduce addiction levels as well as economic, criminal and social harm). It’s truly in the “what works” category. But moral values get in the way of what works all the time.

And there are 3 reasons to know it’s a bad idea.

What are you talking about? I was responding to someone who said we could be letting anyone in and know nothing of their background, I said the same could be said for any stranger I pass in the street.

Luckyingame · 30/01/2026 18:41

Of course you should, dear.
Glad I kept my Czech citizenship, which I almost threw away in the past.

I'm not sure it does work. If you look at BC they just had a 3yr pilot project to decriminalize drug possession and use. To treat substance use as a health issue rather than a criminal one. The project has ended and Will not be extended.IT absolutely has not worked substance abuse is at epadmic levels.
