To not get the visceral levels of hatred people have for Keir Starmer

LastChristmasigaveyousomesocks · 29/01/2026 19:58

I’m not suggesting he’s the greatest prime minister ever. I’m not even suggesting he’s good at all. But some people really, really passionately hate him.

He is a bit insipid and doesn’t have much charisma but overall he seems like a decent enough bloke who perhaps lacks the political skill and acumen he needs. He’s out of his depth basically.

But that’s not a reason to actually despise someone is it?

When did we get to a point where we can’t just disagree without painting the other person as the devil incarnate?

Tbh I don’t get the visceral level of hatred for anyone. I hate the Labour party in its current iteration, probably more than the last Tory government. I hate the media and its biased poor reporting. I am angered by and despise many of the policies of both governments but ‘hate’ individuals? No.

Except for Rees-Mogg. Yeah, I might hate him, though…

You are repeatedly implying that the points stated by the previous poster are valid.

I've already explained why I'm not interested in getting into a debate about them.

But you are the one scoffing at the points listed and saying people are lying. Yet you don't want to back that up. You can't expect people to agree with you if you won't actually say why they are wrong? Surely?

Gloriia · 30/01/2026 08:50

I feel a bit sorry for him really. He is so wet and useless and looks like he's about to burst into tears at every public outing.

Did we all see him scurrying about on the floor picking up Trump's dropped papers a few months ago, absolutely representative of who wears the trousers in that 'special relationship'.

Fascinating. None of the Starmer lovers (…) can actually rebut the issues listed by PP. On the basis they can’t be bothered, it seems. Closing debate down. That’s the tactic of people who can’t respond with anything reasonable. It’s what the gender wang looney tunes do when they’re asked to demonstrate how biological sex can be changed. They can’t answer so shut people down. It’s what the Labour lovers are doing on this thread. As I said, fascinating.

Yes seems a bit hard. Things have moved on, it’s not so easy to do the pre GE lines anymore.

NotDarkGothicMama · 30/01/2026 08:51

I agree OP. I think he's doing a decent job in a very tricky economic and geopolitical situation and is certainly a far more credible leader than Truss and Johnson.

People want quick solutions to complex and expensive problems and it's not going to happen, no matter who you vote for. Take immigration. Trump has thousands of ICE agents rounding up immigrants (or anyone who looks a bit foreign) at gunpoint and shipping them off to detention centres. It's doing nothing for the cost of living for the average American citizen and is heading towards civil war if they keep murdering people in the street.

imfabul0us · 30/01/2026 08:53

@EasternStandard
are you ok with these outcomes due to those policies?
My point is that why do we keep hearing negative stuff - why isn't the positive stuff spoken about more - it's really unbalanced - almost propaganda.
Farage is allowed to 'misspeak' about buying 'his' house - and the matter is dropped yet if Starmer had 'inadvertently' not declared nearly £400k in expenses you can bet that the media would have run the story constantly until he resigned - see Angela Raynor.
Starmer is not perfect and you can't please everyone all of the time, but yes - I'm happy that someone is trying to make peoples' lives better in the face of overwhelming negativity. It's much better than handing out millions in dodgy contracts to his mates and the utter chaos of the last few governments.

If an elderly person dropped something id pick it up

or do you think that starmer should have waited for an aide to do it? (Absolutely fine if you think this…but again i wouldn’t wait for someone else to pick it up)

But you can't discuss "positive" things if there arent any positive things to discuss. Even those two issues you like the look of are having bad outcomes that the government really should have anticipated
. It really is terrible luck for poor old Keir.

Also re undeclared expenses do you remember Lord Ali? And yet KS still in office....

this, I have never voted labour and had some doubts, we really thought dh would be rinsed tax wise so the fact he didnt came as a suprise

Is her name Keir Starmer though? Who is today's topic.

So when people are justifying personal hatred for KS, the work of every one in his party can be added as fuel to the fire; but when one of his MPs are doing a good job, that's irrelevant? Either the man is responsible for the entirety of the Labour parties work, good or ill, or he isn't.

If you can see those policies have those negative outcomes then the spin is to pretend they don’t.

Yes I'm sure there are assistants around for those things. To see our PM scurrying on the floor in front of Trump was, as always with Starmer, cringeworthy.

Well he is the leader. First among equals and all that...he's the captain and takes responsibility for failure and credit for success. What's the point in discussing yout MP? We dont know her. We know KS though.

Gloriia · 30/01/2026 09:01

Politicians always get 'hate'. Look at BJ, Truss, May, Cameron, Blair. They are easy targets as they're up there saying things those who didn't vote for them don't like.
I doubt they look at mumsnet though so couldn't care less.

Typical response from maybe 19 months ago. Given that ski slope decline for the party and KS perhaps it’s no longer working.

ChickenPet · 30/01/2026 09:09

As a Tory I wish we'd still stuck with Sunak. He knew what was going to happen. Especially with the economy.

One good thing Keir has done is been sensible with his relationship with the US.

Apparently so and we must only discuss this very important issue on the fwr board even when its absolutely relevant to the person being disucussed. Not allowed on other threads!

imfabul0us · 30/01/2026 09:10

@Pineneedlesincarpet
I have linked to positive things - you disagree - that's allowed. I think that better rights for renters and workers - especially those on low pay, are not bad outcomes as you do. This thread is about the hatred for Starmer but you have not commented on the difference in media coverage between Starmer and Farage.
Anyway..........................
Back to work.

Yes. And we mustn't mention on here that Keir admitted that men can have a cervix either.
