To not get the visceral levels of hatred people have for Keir Starmer

I’m not suggesting he’s the greatest prime minister ever. I’m not even suggesting he’s good at all. But some people really, really passionately hate him.

He is a bit insipid and doesn’t have much charisma but overall he seems like a decent enough bloke who perhaps lacks the political skill and acumen he needs. He’s out of his depth basically.

But that’s not a reason to actually despise someone is it?

When did we get to a point where we can’t just disagree without painting the other person as the devil incarnate?

I guess maybe Reform supporters hate him? I don't really see him as horrendous. It is just that this government were expected to wave a magic wand and fix everything that came before.
He seems a decent enough person but maybe almost like he's not flashy enough or doesn't have a big enough ego to seem 'sexy' as a politician? But I can't think of anything less sexy than Farage or Trump.

Why do you assume that people criticising KS are doing it because he hasn’t waved a magic wand and fixed everything?

What about the fact that he and his government spent years accusing the sitting government of incompetence, taking bungs from their mates, evading tax etc and sold himself as the moral upstanding ‘grown up’ who would definitely not do any of that, yet the minute he took power he and his cabinet were doing all that and more?

Not to mention additional awfulness of attacking free speech, democracy, jury trials etc while ramming through terrible quality legislation that will result in vulnerable and poor people dying prematurely. Not to mention his personal mission of hounding of British servicemen to the point of suicide and the disastrous Chagos lunacy.

Nobody expected him to wave a magic wand and fix everything, that is just rude and dismissive to those who object to his actions. If he could just try and not actively harm our country and society that would be a start.

SunnySideDeepDown · 01/02/2026 10:28

I know. Even when Boris was found to be a lying hypocrite he didn’t get anything like Keir.

As previous posters have said, it’s a mixture of people generally being nasty now, and the power of the media.

I dont understand it at all.

Sure you do.

So, nothing to do with the policy disasters and u-turns, then?

Yeh the ‘magic wand’ thing comes up a fair bit on these threads. It’s not that.

I suppose if someone still rates him they won’t get why people don’t. It doesn’t particularly matter if they don’t get why as the numbers will be difficult for Starmer anyway.

And yet...

Yes, hilarious how they rate Ed Davey, the absolute buffoon who thinks women should definitely not have rights to anything away from men, above KS.

He’s not even viewed as the best of a bad bunch.

SeekingAlpha · 01/02/2026 11:27

MunicipalDarwinism · 01/02/2026 10:33

You do realise that Starmer being deposed won't result in a general election? Don't believe what Farage tells you about an early GE. That is very much wishful thinking on his part.

You genuinely made me chuckle there.

Basing a statement on a false premise as if it were my premise? Nice try.

Starmer doesn’t just get taken out in a vacuum, does he? There will be an inevitable split, with Streeting or Rayner (or Burnham) merely a zombie caretaker until they are, in turn, taken out.

If ‘Ed Davey’ is the answer, what is the question?

Asked nobody ever…

Many of us would be happy if Starmer simply sat on his hands rather than inflict any more damage on the UK.

Talk about a reverse Midas.

Davey's not being touted as the next PM, though. Farage is. Starmer beats him in that poll, (as do Davey and Badenoch tbf). Which I find heartening. Despite his faults I would MUCH rather have Starmer as PM than Farage. YMMV.

Who are you rooting for to replace Starmer? Streeting, Burnham, Rayner et al (who have I missed?)

Britain is in the early stages of a powerful cyclical recovery, and perhaps the highest growth rates for a generation.

What would the other Labour leaders do differently? Keir is just doing Labour policy

I think Labour would do well to not follow the Tory hokey cokey style of leadership. So I am not particularly rooting for anyone.

ChickenPet · 01/02/2026 11:44

I dislike KS as a PM but he won the election he has the mandate and he should govern.

EasternStandard · 01/02/2026 11:48

MunicipalDarwinism · 01/02/2026 10:19

And yet...

This doesn’t translate to votes. If you look at polling take notice of the ones that are reflected in local and other elections.

Even Labour are doing this, hence their internal wrangling.

I would, but I don't subscribe to the Telegraph so can't tell you what the rest of the article by Evan-Pritchard says (though of course he gives Labour no credit!). Perhaps you could provide a share token if I ask nicely 😇

I’m surprised you’d repeat a headline without question or even reading the article. Is that the same for all Telegraph articles?

I didn't "repeat a headline without question".😊 I read this article which gives more detail about the Telegraph article.

Britain is on the 'cusp of an economic boom,' Telegraph predicts https://share.google/72T4YnA2oDLFzAJub

I remember in primary there were broadly 2 groups. Parents who academically pushed their kids to achieve the best and to go to a grammar school and those who "didn't want to stress their kids out" and let them waste evenings playing COD. Even here I see a whole thread of "primary school children shouldn't do homework."

You are from the Micheal Gove school of ‘everyone should be above average’ then

gotcha

Ah, AEP.

I am sorry, but the data would support an outcome the polar opposite of whatever he posits.

Edit: I have now read the article, and would argue with AEP’s central tenet.

In fact, borrowing moves inversely to interest rates (logically). It’s not a sign of strength in the economy, but the opposite.

’Dismayed’ I think that journo is onto something. Labour supporters will repeat his article for him without reading the source. Even if they usually deride the press he’s writing in.

You’re putting a lot of faith in one person there. I did read it and the comments and we’ll see, the comments covered his earlier declarations which didn’t happen.
