To have a secret snack drawer

Dolly34 · 28/01/2026 22:35

There’s a drawer in our kitchen that I know my husband never looks in. I bought some chocolate to bake with the other day and hid it in this draw so he wouldn’t find it and eat it before I baked. Since then, I’ve bought a big dairy milk caramel bar and left it in there for when I want to pick at it.
It’s been in there over a week, and I know if it was anywhere else, my DH would have inhaled it.

Today, I bought a pack of chocolate hobnobs and put them in the draw - again so I can pick at at my leisure when working from
home.

AIBU by hiding food from my husband to keep for myself?

(some extra context that I’ve been going through IVF this month and just want a stash for when I need it, rather than going to get something and it’s disappeared!)

Critique…….

grabs coat and starts running very fast…..

DierdreBarlow · 29/01/2026 08:56

My Mum used to say that if she wanted anything to herself, she used to hide it under a tea towel. That way, her secret stash would be safe because no one else in the house would ever lift a tea towel.

Peridoteage · 29/01/2026 08:58

Yabvu to refer to a drawer as a "draw"

HereForTheFreeLunch · 29/01/2026 09:07

@Peridoteage So original!

Cheersminesalargeone · 29/01/2026 09:11

Doesn’t everyone have one🤔

GrumpyFrogg · 29/01/2026 09:19

Yanbu. I have a box of extra chocolatey biscuits tucked down the side of a corner cupboard in our kitchen. There's other snacks and treats available to the rest of the house, but those are mine 😋

My spelling is and always had been appalling. There's really nothing I can do about it. Being corrected by other people isn't going to cure me unfortunately.

WithIcePlease · 29/01/2026 09:22

I couldn’t be with a man who didn’t have self control over a packet of hob nobs.
Or a man who didn’t consider my feelings and didn’t allow me personal possessions.

I have a secret chocolate stash... shhhh... don't tell my family!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 29/01/2026 09:34

Drawer

@GargoylesofBeelzebub you’re a bit late to the party 😅

All the PPs commenting that it's drawer not draw need more joy in their life. Perhaps via a snack drawer

I have a lots of joy and a snack DRAWER thanks

LostThestral · 29/01/2026 09:43

completely fine, if he wants treats he probably knows where the shop is

chattyness · 29/01/2026 09:45

Please stop going on about people posting draw & drawer ! I know the difference. I also know the difference between words like there, they're & their or where, ware & wear, your & you're, here & hear etc. but sometimes I just type the wrong thing if I'm pressed for time or if I'm on my kindle fire the stupid auto correct changes it for me & I haven't noticed before I press send . I'm sure it's the same for many posters and it really doesn't matter as long as you get your point across . It's a public forum not a legal document!

Idontjetwashthefucker · 29/01/2026 09:46

For fuck sake, it was pretty fucking obvious what OP meant, all those calling her stupid or thick should be ashamed. If you couldn't understand the OP from what OP had written then she's not the stupid one.

I put my name on things I don't want my DC to eat (in fact I write "mother"). All the rest is far game. I thinking hiding things sends a bad message.

Yep. This. And my kids learned early to live like members of a community and to be considerate to others. I find these threads among the most depressing on Mumsnet. Apart from anything else, the parents concerned are perpetuating this behaviour for the next generation.

Absolutely right. Nasty bullying over a small mistake.
Absolutely classless.

I know these threads are supposed to be all giggly about chocolate and snacks.

But on a serious note, hell would freeze over before I hid food in my own home.

And it's not a great example to set kids either, if they're going to have to end up either eating sweets/snacks straight away, or hiding them so no-one else takes them.

My older dd def has to hide her sweets or her sister will sneak them. I can’t say I’m worried about any serious issues as a result.

KateDelRick · 29/01/2026 10:13

Hi @Dolly34 . Unfortunately, because you put "draw" in the title, and also in your original post, people will keep referring to this. Sometimes people just read the first post and don't bother with updates.
What you could do is either contract MNHQ and ask them to correct it, or say it's being derailed and delete the thread? Otherwise, I suspect this will be the focus of the thread.
Good luck with your IVF journey, it's tough 🤞

i would put a stop to that too. But they aren’t adults. Or role models.

You’re fine keeping it in your own chester draws so no one else finds it, because for all intensive purposes it’s a doggy dog world. But if your husband finds it and starts eating it and gets fat, don’t let him make you an escape goat- any hint of that, just nip it in the butt.

👌

Thanks for all the responses to my actual question. I do feel a bit guilty that I’m not sharing but this is special situation! So thank you to everyone for validating me! 😊

To everyone who came to comment on the spelling of drawer:

  1. it is a shame that you didn’t read my entire post about IVF and perhaps assumed that this might have influenced the mistake - the medication is brutal.
  2. or read the entire post, and thought, wow she must have a lot going on and the kinder thing would be to answer her question rather than critic a genuine error.

It needn't be a drama to have a spelling mistake pointed out. It's a good thing! We ALL make them. People unfortunately get very defensive, when they could just put their energy into correcting it and ensuring it doesn't happen next time, especially when writing for thousands of people to read.

Extraenergyneeded · 29/01/2026 10:27

I sometimes hide things.DH opened and ate 11 of the chocolates I had been given as a thank you !! I rationed the rest.
I think it depends how you were brought up

  1. everyone helps themselves until all gone in one evening. Or
  2. everyone has 1 per night.
Extraenergyneeded · 29/01/2026 10:29

Get your DH to buy you some special snacks to compensate you for what you are going through.

idril · 29/01/2026 10:32

This is hilarious! I honestly thought I was the only one with a secret stash. So pleased to know that it's completely normal. 😂
