To have a secret snack drawer

Dolly34 · 28/01/2026 22:35

There’s a drawer in our kitchen that I know my husband never looks in. I bought some chocolate to bake with the other day and hid it in this draw so he wouldn’t find it and eat it before I baked. Since then, I’ve bought a big dairy milk caramel bar and left it in there for when I want to pick at it.
It’s been in there over a week, and I know if it was anywhere else, my DH would have inhaled it.

Today, I bought a pack of chocolate hobnobs and put them in the draw - again so I can pick at at my leisure when working from
home.

AIBU by hiding food from my husband to keep for myself?

(some extra context that I’ve been going through IVF this month and just want a stash for when I need it, rather than going to get something and it’s disappeared!)

I know these threads are supposed to be all giggly about chocolate and snacks.

But on a serious note, hell would freeze over before I hid food in my own home.

And it's not a great example to set kids either, if they're going to have to end up either eating sweets/snacks straight away, or hiding them so no-one else takes them.

NoFiller · 28/01/2026 23:20

You’re fine keeping it in your own chester draws so no one else finds it, because for all intensive purposes it’s a doggy dog world. But if your husband finds it and starts eating it and gets fat, don’t let him make you an escape goat- any hint of that, just nip it in the butt.

I used to have a bil like this, it's either that or she has to ring fence the food and it becomes a whole thing. This way it's just hers and she can enjoy it without contantly worrying it will be guzzled and grabbed by her greedy husband.

If it's the only area he's greedy and selfish, it's not such a big deal. My ex bil was pretty nice in all other respects and seemed to treat his wife and family well, but was a greedy pig when it came to sweet snacks.

I couldn't be arsed having to constantly remind people or argue, in OPs shoes I'd do precisely the same but without the teeniest bit of guilt and would have been doing it from the start.

My left eye started twitching 😂

@NoFiller
Are you in need of rest bite after that rant?

stickydough · 28/01/2026 23:24

Aw mate. Surely you knew writing ‘draw’ in a thread title was going to prevent so many of us getting to your actual point. But I’ll try! Sorry I do hate to be one of these people but it’s actually painful in this case. I think it’s the attempt to change language, it’s not just about bad spelling, we all do that sometimes.

Anyway, I see your snack drawer and raise you my locked box. I have a shoe box sized box that has a combination lock, to help my DH with his non existent self control, and help myself have a sweet thing remain there when I need it to. I say absolutely have your drawer and enjoy it.

HeyMona · 28/01/2026 23:25

I would need to hide chocolate from myself!

I am very blessed to have a DH who doesn't like chocolate, but my honey roast cashews mysteriously disappear more often than not.

Good luck with the IVF, it can be a rollercoaster and if a bit of chocolate helps go for it.

Nomotivationanymore50 · 28/01/2026 23:33

Oh wow I've met my people! I too have to hide snacks or else greedy DH and DS would scoff the lot. I can make chocolate last ages whereas they seem to think it's about to evaporate unless eaten immediately. I do have to keep finding new places as they bloody find them!!

TaupeGuide · 28/01/2026 23:35

i use a foldout sewing box with different sections for choc

Not sure if you’re trying to harm my self of steam, but I’m fine, so it’s a mute point.

EatAllDay · 28/01/2026 23:38

My OCD couldn’t cope with ‘draw’ but besides that, totally hide your snacks! Is there any other way!!
you may be sure DH buys treats and eats them in the car, my DH sure does! I’m always finding wrappers

Sasha07 · 28/01/2026 23:58

For years I hid my goodies in the top shelf of the fridge door. I had to stop a few years ago but sometimes forget and stash a chocolate bar in there... But now that the kids are a lot taller than me now, I often find my stash has been snatched.
Now I have to hide them in random places, like the utensils drawer or hidden in plain sight in places they just never would suspect. But then I tend to forget about them so it's a nice surprise when I come across a forgotten treasure 😁 enjoy your secret stash, we all deserve to have one!

AmplePlayer · 29/01/2026 00:00

I don't think there's a place in the house where my teens couldn't discover snacks.

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 29/01/2026 00:06

Chocolate is best straight from the freezer anyway 🤤
You can hide it in a half empty bag of frozen peas.
Safer than Fort Knox 😉

pizzaHeart · 29/01/2026 00:08

YANBU to have a secret stash of chocolate, it’s practically a key to successful marriage.

Silverblue1985 · 29/01/2026 00:15

I have a secret drawer with the “nice” stuff. Everything I know he won’t touch is in the kitchen. He easily eats a 500g bar of chocolate in under 24 hours, while I can only eat one square due to reflux issues. Not letting him have my expensive chocolate when he eats it the same way as a bar of Cadburys (not that this is cheap either).

Tempodrom · 29/01/2026 00:18

It's not deliberate, it's a genuine pronunciation @nothanks2026 I'd never heard a different way of pronouncing it until my late teens when I moved away to University.

I was just going to say the same thing. I'd get the ick at just how selfish and greedy it is.

No, you are saying the word draw. You are not saying the word drawer, you do not say blow when you mean blower. You can say drawer and yes the er bit would indeed be noticeable. But you are using a different word.

It is not a pronunciation thing. You can say the er bit but you are choosing not to, and are speaking a different word entirely. And that's fine, I am sure in context it's obvious enough.

Anonanonay · 29/01/2026 00:38

I have an effective way to deal with this which is simply to tell my DH not to eat my stuff. I don't understand why you all put up with that level of disrespect.

Tempodrom · 29/01/2026 00:40

Ffs I'm not choosing to, it's a recognised pronunciation of the word spelt drawer. Blower does not have the differences in regional pronunciation. You however are choosing to be obtuse. @nothanks2026

murasaki · 29/01/2026 00:41

I like my chocolate, not that I like a lot of it, fridge cold. So I keep it in the salad crisper, under things. Works a treat, as he's a gannet but would never look there, although to be fair, he's good at replacing.

chattyness · 29/01/2026 00:48

My secret squirrel cupboard saves my sanity,, because his nibs will ścoff down most cakes, crisps, bicces or choccie bars that he lays eyes on. He's not fat either just sodding greedy . I even started buying things I know he doesn't like just to make sure I've got something for myself. 😆

No, it's not. No need to swear ffs 😅You've been saying the wrong word, that's all.

It is not and never has been a regional anything. It's not a dialect, it's nothing. It's just the wrong word and like some you have been using the wrong word and are now embarrassed and angry.

You are choosing to speak the wrong word, you can say drawer and are choosing to use a different word, draw. But you already know this :)

And no matter how much you spit the dummy you will still be speaking the wrong word.

I don't, actually, care at all. But it's funny you're just determined to double down on being wrong, so keep doing that. I'll just keep correcting you :)

YW.

In the North East of England, draw and drawer are pronounced the same. Not even a schwa
