DurableMatts · 28/01/2026 13:30

Dsis has in the 12 months, moved into a new house (not first house purchase) decorated the house entirely in less than 6months,new kitchen, new bathrooms, new furniture, had solar panels installed. Bought 2 new cars…been on a holiday and a few weekends away (which was the norm for them anyway I suppose) bought a mulberry handbag…do you think they won the lotto? 😂 should I ask?

Ask, as long as you don’t get in a huff if they say it’s none of your business! Or tell you it’s drugs and now you need to join their cartel.

Bigcat25 · 28/01/2026 13:32

Sure why not? Do you think she's be offended if you asked?

Is your family comfortable talking about money?

middleagedandinarage · 28/01/2026 13:33

I would imagine when they bought the new house they budgeted for what would need doing to it, decorating, new bathrooms/kitchens etc

StrawberrySquash · 28/01/2026 13:36

I guess it's possible that they had a house budget that included either work, or buying a good condition house. And they just happened to do the former, so you notice the spending in a way you wouldn't if it was bundled into a show home.
Two cars though!

layingwoody · 28/01/2026 13:38

Well you can if you want but it sounds low key jealous keeping tabs on everything someone’s spent on in the last year.

NCfor24 · 28/01/2026 13:43

My siblings and I would absolutely tell each other if we won the lottery. I feel like if you have to ask strangers if you should ask, then you don't have the relationship where you can!

It's intriguing though! Is it a house you would ordinarily expect to be in budget or something totally outside it? We live in a 3 bed semi. If we moved to a 4 bed then it's feasible we borrowed more and/or extended the term. If we suddenly lived in a 5 bed and more rural then it would say lottery to our families!

ToKittyornottoKitty · 28/01/2026 13:48

Why don’t you think it’s in their budget? What do they do for work?

nomas · 28/01/2026 13:54

Even if they have won, it doesn’t affect you.

Just be happy for them and let them be.

SENmumof22026 · 28/01/2026 13:55

Maybe shes a secret drug dealer or she sold a kidney on the black market.

PlumDeNomNomNom · 28/01/2026 13:56

Don’t rule out Only Fans.

Don’t rule out Only Fans.

I second this...

TeaMeBasil · 28/01/2026 14:01

It would be much funnier if you did ask about Only Fans rather then a boring old lottery win 😂

GasPanic · 28/01/2026 14:03

For "them".

So could be a gift from her in laws.

Or possibly a large work bonus. You can get significant bonuses if you are in a start up and it is sold for example, or if you are in finance or sales.

Or maybe the investment that must not be mentioned.

Lavenderandbrown · 28/01/2026 14:03

I always said If I win the lotto the first thing I would do is pay off mine and my sisters mortgage. Do you typically talk about money with your siblings? I do so it would not be intrusive to ask but I wouldn’t need to she would have called me screaming with joy

BadgernTheGarden · 28/01/2026 14:07

Perhaps they just took a mortgage bigger than they needed to, and cashed in some equity as spending money for work on the new house, cars if they needed them and a few treats.

FrangipaniBlue · 28/01/2026 14:13

I think they had equity in the house they sold and rather than put it all down as deposit they’ve kept some back to do the house decoration/renovation and get the new car.

Possibly one of them has had a promotion at work which has enabled them to get a bigger mortgage and maybe car on finance.

Doesn't sound like lotto levels of spending to me TBH.

Knitterofcrap · 28/01/2026 14:20

If I did this, my close friends would definitely ask me if I had taken up a new side hustle as a drug dealer.

It wouldn’t pass unremarked for six months already!

cocog · 28/01/2026 14:24

Could just be work cars and what they budgeted for for the house. Maybe bag was a Christmas gift or work bonus money, large promotion? Or they have maxed out mortgage and credit cards and got finance for cars 😖

LaurieFairyCake · 28/01/2026 14:29

Well my sister would have already paid off my mortgage so I wouldn’t need to ask 😂 (we have an agreement)

DurableMatts · 28/01/2026 14:41

No it’s not in finance etc…they don’t even have credit cards and are very against debt on a whole. It’s a 5 bed house!! I’m gonna ask! Watch this space!

also they do have good jobs…it’s just A LOT of sudden spending 😅

I remember saying to a friend once, did you win the lottery, when they went from a modest two bed to a five bed detached. Her dh was very financially astute. Tbf though it took them about ten years before they got a new kitchen! 😄

CheeseItOn · 28/01/2026 14:45

If she wanted you to know she'd have told you. It's exciting news and you don't hide it without good reason.

Agreed. If she's won and not told you then asking her won't suddenly make her admit it.

LOL if you really think OnlyFans will make an ordinary person that much money.
