DH waking the kids!

PinkPonyClubb · 28/01/2026 06:42

He’s driving me crazy! I literally watch (baby monitors) as each noise wakes both kids. (1-3)

His alarm goes of at 5.30 both kids are flat out.

We leave both kids doors open when they sleep incase they ever wake and need us. I’ve asked him to shut these, he forgets every morning. He shuts the bathroom door and the noise always wakes the 1 year old first, it’s the latch it kind of pings so loud. He washes his hair which sounds like an avalanche, drops loads and that bloody cough drives me nuts! He can not brush his teeth without gagging.

On occasion, when it’s me up early first, the kids don’t wake.

Am I being precious? Is this just normal morning noise? I can’t see why he can’t assist the door closing quietly, close the kids doors and not drop everything

It's really bothering me that you are not acknowledging the fact that doors should be shut for fire safety! Can you please just confirm you've at least took this on board?!

My teen daughter doesn’t like to sleep with her door closed.

Not a cat’s chance in hell I’m forcing her to close her door because of the tiny risk of a house fire

Barrellturn · 28/01/2026 21:21

I have to get up at 5 And have light sleepers. I would suggest

  • close the doors. Put white noise on a timer so it turns off (dimming slowly) and you can have the monitors on
  • he showers the night before and then wets his hair, face wash in the kitchen sink and gets dressed downstairs (having got everything ready the night before)

I'd argue that your teen daughter has more chance of being able to escape a fire independently than children who are the age of the OP's kids.

She’s never wanted her door closed
I have never forced her to do so

You should shut your kids doors at night in case of fire, this will protect them from smoke inhalation and slow the spread of the fire.

Agree with this, it is so important!

That's fine, I'm not suggesting you do🤷🏻‍♀️ I'm just asking the OP to acknowledge that she has read the comments about fire safety as most other points on this thread have been responded to other than this. Both you & the OP can decide what to do with your doors of a night. Your house, your choice.

Presumably because not something she’s remotely going to consider

I’ve got a 1 year old. I have to get up at a stupid hour one day a week. I don’t flush the loo, or use my electric toothbrush on that day. I avoid putting the landing light on and avoid the bean to cup machine and make a cafetière of coffee instead. Everyone knows you don’t bloody wake the kids up, especially if you’ll be leaving the house and not dealing with them

Like I said, your house, your rules. You do you.

Camerich · 28/01/2026 15:28

If you say so

Because upthread you said you have really explained to him many times how this is impacting you and the children negatively…. And he just reverts time and time again.

We have! I don’t think he realises the impact. He’s quite for a few days then it starts again. He’s so bloody clumsy!

What does it mean to "sleep through his brother"?

Sorry, poorly worded. Just sleep through the general noise of his brother being a toddler.

What happened this morning @PinkPonyClubb ?

Like I said, your house, your rules. You do you.

And same for Op
so you shouldn’t be bothered if she hasn’t “acknowledged” posts that aren’t remotely relevant to her

Currentskin · 29/01/2026 06:12

Are you planning on going back to work @PinkPonyClubb

the test will be if you have to start doing alternate mornings with your DH… so that on some mornings he’s responsible for the children and others you are. Guaranteed he will “remember”

Sausagedognamedmash · 29/01/2026 06:16

He needs to put his toothbrush downstairs. If he is only essentially wetting his hair he can do that at the downstairs sink too. If he is downstairs he will be less likely to wake the children.

But yes as PP said up thread, close doors at night. If there is a fire it makes a huge difference to their safety and protection. An open door offers no protection at all.

Thanks for letting me, and all the other posters who commented on the same matter, know that our posts regarding fire safety aren't relevant. You're absolutely right, it's not an important point at all 👍🏻

Please I’ve made you chuckle. Hopefully not so “bothered” anymore by the op not “acknowledging” some posts.

No I'm all good now thanks, got all the acknowledgement I needed from you 👍🏻

I'm okay if the OP doesn't want to knowledge my post. What I'm even more okay with is the fact that you keep posting and therefore you are keeping this thread active. Hopefully it'll mean someone who currently keeps their internal doors open of a night sees this thread and is educated about the danger of it. It's up to them if they want to act on that knowledge, but you never know, someone might and it might save a life one day.
