To ask Does any one actually go clubbing any more?

My ds just turned 18, and I thought that he would be going to pubs and clubs with his college friends. This doesn't seem to be the case at all. They all seem to stay at home.

I've also noticed a lot of posters and adverts around my local area for over 30s and over 40s events. Day discos. Does any one actually go properly clubbing any more? I haven't been myself since a hen night probably 15 years ago, and it was crap. Dirty, sticky floors, tables and glasses, crap music, not many people dancing and a really aggressive, swearing DJ bloke.

Probably a good thing, as I remember binge drinking being a massive problem when I was young. It must be saving a fortune for the police and the NHS to no longer have this binge drinking culture. I used to work in a town centre as a driver years ago, and would see people being sick in the street at 10pm. It wasn't pleasant.

I am now indoors by 6pm, getting settled with curtains drawn. How are these clubs still in business?

Mine do round our way sometimes there are huge queues to get in some.

Incalescent · 27/01/2026 19:17

I live close to the city centre in a university cit, and the clubs here seem to be thronged.

Itsmetheflamingo · 27/01/2026 19:24

There is a really interesting documentary on iPlayer about clubs. If the carry on closing down at the rate they have since 2020 there will be no clubs at all by 2029.

so not many people go!

Ioweyounothingnothingatall · 27/01/2026 19:24

I go “out out” a lot less now I’m in my 40s but still do occasionally, and always have good times. Also, a lot of the people out at the same time are younger people, and the city centre is very busy Friday and Saturday.

I don’t regret my binge drinking partying days at all. Some of the best times of my life.

McBickies · 27/01/2026 19:26

I would honestly still go, except there is nowhere to go (not that I am aware of)

yeesh · 27/01/2026 19:27

Our city is packed every weekend, it probably depends where you live. A lot changed for ‘clubs’ when bars were allowed to open just as late through, that’s been the case for a long time.

IAmTheLogLady · 27/01/2026 19:29

I go out clubbing once every 3 months or so. Clubs are empty these days compared to when I was younger. Even on a busy night, its not busy.
Gigs are packed though, I go to a gig most months and they tend to be really busy.

blubberball · 27/01/2026 19:34

I guess it depends on the area. University towns and cities are probably ok then. My area seems dead

Agreed. Really tricky to get gig tickets, always very busy.

ClassicalQueen · 27/01/2026 19:39

It is definitely not as popular as it used to be. I went out at the weekend (a rarity these days) and it wasn’t busy, but there was still a queue to get into the biggest club. That was in a mid sized northern town.

MarkSkiddie · 27/01/2026 19:41

All things ‘have their day’ and ‘clubbing ‘ as we knew it in the late 90’s/00’s is over , the lack of decent E’s probably has contributed, let’s be honest

Ioweyounothingnothingatall · 27/01/2026 19:52

There’s a lot of more of a late night bar culture now. Whenever we go out, that’s where we end up - late night bar.

Wolverine23 · 27/01/2026 19:54

I went ti a popular one not long ago, Friday night and absolutely no where near as busy as the 90’s when I started going. It was a rare night out and not my thing now but I’m glad I saw it and thank God I experienced the much better era. Sorry but it’s just not as good

Chasingsquirrels · 27/01/2026 19:55

My just turned 20yo goes to clubs with his friends.

RainbowBagels · 27/01/2026 19:56

I was brought up in London and went clubbing in the West End in the 90's. I think all the clubs I went to when I was young have closed down, so I just don't think its a thing anymore.

when the likes of Wayne Linneker get involved in the Ibiza scene you know it’s game over

ooscal · 27/01/2026 20:17

I'd have to be stoned or buzzed off my head to go to a club. And I'm 80% deaf now so the thud of the music coming through the floor would kill me. And I'm older now and couldn't be arsed getting out of my pjs for that.

I enjoyed it when younger and I could hear ok though. And I wasn't stoned or buzzed either, just young. 😊

MarkSkiddie · 27/01/2026 20:20

@ooscal i agree, 🤣, sorry about your hearing loss though 💐

herbalteabag · 27/01/2026 20:23

I used to go clubbing a lot in the early 90s but have no desire to do it now! My eldest son has been to clubs but didn't show an interest until he was at uni.

LasVegass · 27/01/2026 20:27

I was looking up at tickets at a club in London. First releases have sold out, they have some left at £55 each. Erm, no. There were a couple of familiar and cheaper ones I knew but they’ve closed down. My DD however seems to go every couple of weeks in her Uni town and she always says it’s only a fiver to get in.

Blinkingbother · 27/01/2026 20:28

My eldest (about to be 19) doesn’t/hasn’t ever gone clubbing, though some of his friends do. Neither he nor any of his cousins who are similar ages (all 18-22) really ever drink alcohol either. They do go out for meals and to the pub occasionally though. They do however have social lives - it usually involves doing something (sport etc) though. Way more healthy than what out generation was into/up to!!

mamaduckbone · 27/01/2026 20:43

My ds20 is at uni and goes clubbing - not as much as I did at his age though - I think it’s just very expensive these days.

blubberball · 27/01/2026 20:46

They do seem to be much more sensible and health conscious over all these days. It's a good thing really

Me and My work colleague the same age as me have been discussing this. We'd go out on a Friday clubbing and turn up hungover to our Saturday jobs! (Whilst still 16/17 I might add).

I spoke to my hairdresser who is 20 and she only goes clubbing occasionally. It seems rare these days for Young'uns to go out much.

My and my friend used to work in hairdressers as Saturday jobs and one fateful day my friend was so hungover she was washing someone’s hair and had to push their hair to one side to puke down the sink 😭 absolutely unbelievable lookkng back
