To think you actually need 2k a week to live on?

Post bills/house etc?
For a brilliant quality of life?

Perfect week stuff as in fun activities, no budget. Food shopping throwing everything in the trolley - lots of easy food. Being able to order Ubereats whenever you fancy ?

Yes. We actually earn about 2k a week spare, but we save the vast majority of it.

I can confirm that it is very nice to never worry about money though. I have to give my head a wobble when I think, "oh no, £400 on the car", when I only leave £250 in my account, except that I have a car repairs account as well as all the other savings etc.

People say money can't buy you happiness have never had enough money to find out. The car breaking down is a non-event to me except a bit of grumbling, because I can ALWAYS afford the bill, the taxi instead and an entire new car too without really thinking about it.

I'm not saying this to brag, I've just seen a few posts about money not buying happiness lately and I think they're incredibly naive.

Or possibly you are quite naive. Ask someone who’s disabled, has a disabled child, poor health, no family or a multitude of other real problems if money can buy happiness and then consider your privileges.

Money can take away a lot of unhappiness, but beyond a certain (quite low) point stops even doing that. It certainly can’t buy happiness. I’ve been rich and poor, and rich is better. But it doesn’t equal happiness.

The original poster has a somewhat simplistic idea of wealth. But there’s nothing wrong with that. Many things have to be experienced before they are understandable.

Lol I’m pissing at this x

Well I’d use some of the money to get that sorted.

Haha well worded it wrong but tbh unlimited spending kind of is a need for me really to make ultimate happiness

But is not UNLIMITED though. It just feels like it because it so much more than what you have now (I'm guessing). If you did have that much I expect you'd buy a 1 million house and a 50,000 car and it would soon all go on mortgage and car repayments. We live according to our means and if our means increase we automatically increase our bills.

£280 on steak? Glad to be a vegetarian!

That would be £280 for a steak each every night for a week. Not many people do that because of the cost. I’d rather have one steak a week and then eat chicken etc the rest of the week

No, this is 2k after mortgage and bills. So it would be like unlimited spending as the big stuff is already done.

Well, you have to earn it, win it, marry money, or inherit it. Society or the State is not going to gift it to you.

Well exactly, that’s why it’s a lighthearted thread.

No. The answer is no, you don't need 2k after bills.

Sounds like someone needs a McDonald’s and a few ciggies. It’s just fun!

Actually, 2k isn't miles off.

3x school fees is about 2k a week depending on the school. I have 3dc. So I'd need more than 2k a week play money if I wanted real luxury.

I think we'd have to make it special for the private school parents - we'd give you another £2k to spend, how about that, now what would you buy and don't do all I'm saving up for my babies future - this money is all for you!

The money/happiness point is an interesting. When DS2 was born at 27 (29 years ago) weeks, very unwell, and died. It was a very dark time, despite having a lot of money. Whilst there is always a hole filled with sadness, our experience, able to afford a funeral and a headstone, an au-pair and nursery for DS1, a holiday, some private ante-natal care with dd who was born 51 weeks later, was incomparable to that of a family going through the same but with more month than money to contend with. A shit curve ball whatever one's circs, but shit and comfortable with choices is significantly betternfor one's emotional and physical wellbeing than shit and skint to the bone.

In that case, id do plenty of weekend trips. Pop to Rome for the weekend for a really nice dinner.

Id buy a good-quality designer wardrobe staple a week and obvs pay dry-cleaning.

Id get taxis for DC rather than spending 3x 3hrs weekly on driving to DSs hobby.

Daily cleaners so they even did the small jobs like dishwasher/washing.

I reckon I could spend it.

That I have wasted my time. Really frustrating.

I thought Mumsnet was about people trying to help each other not waste their time, but evidently got that wrong.

Won't read any more now, or that just makes it worse.

Pigletin · 27/01/2026 12:57

You’d really be spending your money on ciggies and unlimited uber eats? I think it’s fair to say that this is not what most people imagine as the perfect life lol

Vowedonlines · 27/01/2026 12:58

We live like that anyway (almost). Weekly takeaways, holidays end of every term, new car every year (not on credit), cleaner, catered children’s parties..

I both agree and disagree - imo that is way too much to need for random frittering, but I could easily spend that much averaged out for a couple of years running if it could include stuff like getting a brand new car and a really fancy holiday.

Some of my colleagues earn the kind of money where this is feasibly their disposable income. Some of them do stuff like the mad holidays. One of our directors was cheerfully telling me it’s just not worth going to Disney if you don’t do the VIP tour guide to avoid the queues

I literally use MN to waste my time! Its a chat space that occasionally spits out a nugget of good advice or help.
