To think you actually need 2k a week to live on?

TheIcyAquaFawn · 26/01/2026 22:31

Post bills/house etc?
For a brilliant quality of life?

Perfect week stuff as in fun activities, no budget. Food shopping throwing everything in the trolley - lots of easy food. Being able to order Ubereats whenever you fancy ?

See I’m really naughty and hate cooking so I just know I’d order McDs several times a week and go to Nando’s lol

Kind of just as well you don't have it then: that would be seriously unhealthy.

Sorry to be a killjoy. I was on your side in a "why can't other pp just leave her be to dream?" kind of way, but that was when I was envisaging decent food dropping into your trolley on your unfettered grocery trips.

Wanting to live on McD's and Nando's is just childish...

remotefly · 27/01/2026 09:28

Oh come on! The OP is fantasizing about a life where they don't have to budget, they don't have to worry about paying the bills, they can buy as many McDonald's and Nando's as they please. They can go to the supermarket and not worry about having as many ready meals as they want - turn the heating on, buy scratch cards and cigs, grab a taxi etc...

I'm sure those of us who have a very limited income have the same fantasies, it might not bring perfect happiness but not worrying about paying for stuff takes quite a load off - life is better - not perfect but much better without financial stresses - surely we all know that.

😂You don't approve of the Op's fantasy😂This place gets weirder every day!

itsthetea · 27/01/2026 09:31

I do think people who need vast amounts of money to have fun should spend what little they have on therapy

people who are seriously rich often struggle / endless “fun” seems pointless after a while

you don’t need 2k a week - you can achieve high levels of life satisfaction and joy without that - work on that dream

although I know that’s almost impossible if you are living had to mouth

I agree about the not worrying fantasy being harmless.

Not so sure about fantasising about constant takeaways!

Completely agree that life is much better without financial stresses! If you were eating multiple McDonald’s/Nandos/smoking as much as the OP mentions you’d definitely have other stresses though, mainly on your heart!

Indeed. More expensive retailers are available, but you can only go SO expensive before you're throwing food away.

Personally the nicest thing is lots of good quality veg and meat but also the TIME to cook them properly.

Though I can't imagine how much slap your have to wear constantly to get through £300/week.

The make-up comment tickled me because I spend what I think is a lot on make-up, hair and skincare and I don't tell people in r/l. Cut and colour every 6-8 weeks, skincare Estee (probs 300 every 3 months), make-up: foundation, blusher, powder, concealer, mascara, eyebrow pencil, lipstick, (combo of clinique, lancome, estee, No 7) (I may have enough lipsticks to last me for three years!). A nice perfume habit.

I've just added it up over a year and it works out at £62.50 pw and I think that's pretty excessive, even though it's me spending it.

seanconneryseyebrow · 27/01/2026 09:38

I have this. Only a recent thing. It’s bloody awesome! And I have no dependents now. I’m saving for retirement because I can’t spend it all.
makes me feel bad because I know how many are suffering - I’ve been there myself

I could easily spend that on lovely holidays and good food!

RomeoRivers · 27/01/2026 09:51

I don’t spend quite that much, but I definitely could! OP is right that 2k a week is the optimum.

Half would go to holidays, so 4K a month would give me: 2x long haul- Caribbean, Maldives + 2x Europe - Ikos and other. We are a family of 5 and we do love a swim up room or private pool.

The other 4K…
£100 a week M&S
£100 a week Tesco
£200 a week fancy steak restaurant
£60 a week takeaway
£60 a week lunch with friends

£480 Laser hair removal, 6 sessions
£££ Augustinus Bader skincare subscriptions
£90 2x Full body massage, 90 mins
£££ Clothes for the kids, I love Ted Baker, Reiss + Allsaints
£200 Carvela + Ted Baker handbags
£50 Charlotte Tilbury make up
£££ Haircut + highlights
£200 Nirvana Spa
£££ Expensive furniture

titchy · 27/01/2026 09:59

If I had £2000 a week income I certainly wouldn’t be spending it on fags, Maccies or Nando’s. Jesus - you could buy some actually nice tasty food for that. And eat it in the country it was grown in. Frankly if that’s what you’d spend it on you don’t deserve it.

Agrumpyknitter · 27/01/2026 10:03

There’s this theory that economists predicted we would be working less more like a 30 hour week by now and the theory goes that we should be working less. That if we spent more time bridging the income gap instead of pursuing economic growth we would all be happier as we would have more time to spend with family for leisure etc.
however there are whole industries geared up to provide us with convenience foods, takeaways when we are tired and stressed, we purchase more when we’re tired as we think we deserve a treat that means we keep longer working hours and continue to be burned out, by all the things we need to buy.

It’s like during covid our spending shifted locally or not at all. People weren’t spending at lunchtime in the big cities anymore, they were eating at home. If I earned 100k I would be saving it, paying the mortgage off (we have a small amount left) and having more leisure time.

If Reform (Tory rejects) get in people will need all their pennies to be able to afford private healthcare insurance.

Rewis · 27/01/2026 10:10

Do I need £2000/week to live a nice life? No.
Would having £2000/week be nice? Yes.

Nomedshere · 27/01/2026 10:17

Nandos, McDonalds and fags
🤣

RomeoRivers · 27/01/2026 11:09

I forgot theatre!

Ghht · 27/01/2026 11:18

This thread is hilarious! It’s bringing out the top MN pretentiousness trump cards.

-Assuming everyone will have school fees

-The glaring disgust towards Uber Eats, obviously only home cooked organic food

-Scratch cards and cigarettes!!!!!

-Money sent on anything other than cultured activities is money wasted

It is divine

😁

50Balesofgrey · 26/01/2026 23:17

I've got horses. I could spend it.

Aaaa I guess so, depends if you have them at home, full livery, which stables. I kept mine south west London outskirts and it was expensive but not 2k a week expensive 😂only had the one though.

Dliplop · 27/01/2026 11:25

Instead of hating on OP’s fantasy why not write out what you’d spend your pretend money on?

I’m pretty sure most people who build up to that would end up switching to healthier stuff at least part of the time - half of them end up shilling huel and meal kits on their podcasts but at least McDonald’s sounds fun and silly.

TheIcyAquaFawn · 27/01/2026 11:53

Well this thread has given me a chuckle that’s for sure. Some of you have been brutal 😂

Off for a lunchtime McDs and a ciggie.

So for my £2000 per week (and I'm assuming dh gets £1000 too) I'm spending...
£1000 on holidays - looking forward to a few First class flights and 6 star hotels, personal guides and personal chefs.
£1000 holidays
£200 on clothes, shoes, sports gear
£200 on personal trainer
£150 on groceries - Waitrose of course
£50 on hair and make up - I'm quite low maintenance
£35 gym membership
£200 eating out - might be a bit much every week but maybe I'd spend the leftover on taxis and having some pocket change
£165 on very lovely red wine

jbm16 · 27/01/2026 12:00

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 27/01/2026 08:44

Yes. We actually earn about 2k a week spare, but we save the vast majority of it.

I can confirm that it is very nice to never worry about money though. I have to give my head a wobble when I think, "oh no, £400 on the car", when I only leave £250 in my account, except that I have a car repairs account as well as all the other savings etc.

People say money can't buy you happiness have never had enough money to find out. The car breaking down is a non-event to me except a bit of grumbling, because I can ALWAYS afford the bill, the taxi instead and an entire new car too without really thinking about it.

I'm not saying this to brag, I've just seen a few posts about money not buying happiness lately and I think they're incredibly naive.

I'm not sure if buys happiness, but definitely removes the daily stresses and worries, and gives people greater choices in life.

Oneborneverydecade · 27/01/2026 12:02

I don't think £8k pm equals £100k pa? Maybe in a two income household?

I think £2k pm after bills would be lovely. I think I could spend £500 a week quite easily. I've got my eye on an Adanola fleece that's £80, a couple of more expensive purchases like that and lunch/dinner out as a family and you've spent it.

But hey ho it's a dream

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 27/01/2026 12:09

2k a week - for that I'd have a personal chef three evenings a week (£600?), a personal trainer 3-4 times a week (£300), a fabulous babysitter twice twice a week (£100) and eat out at least once in any restaurant I'd like (£200). That would leave enough to do super fun activities, theatre trips etc with the DC not worrying about what they cost. Plus get my hair done / massage / facial etc whenever I wanted really. That would be pretty amazing. Sign me up!

tworottenapples · 27/01/2026 12:14

I don't think £2k a week would be enough to fund my private jet, my private yacht and my helicopter that I keep in the grounds of my 30 bedroom mansion. 😂
