Words and phrases that drive you insane...

1000 replies

Ducksbehindthesofa · 26/01/2026 11:25

Certain words (usually nonsense or pseudowords) and phrases really grate on me, sometimes to the extent I don't bother reading the rest of a narrative if I stumble across a word or phrase on my hit list, halfway through something.

There are plenty, but a few to kick off:

Holibobs. It's not even an abbreviation for goodness sake.

Chillax. Just why?

"You do you" - this seems to be the in phrase at the moment, especially with the younger generation. It always sounds vaguely condescending to me

Chrimbo. Please, no

Nom nom nom. This one is right up there with holibobs!

Your turn......

All of the above! I wish I hadn't started reading this thread because I'm cringing so much now.

I suspect I might be alone with this one because I can't work out what annoys me about it but I really hate "watch this space".

A red lip
A black boot
A skinny jean

The worst I ever heard in this vein was ‘a blue dungaree’

I heard “ paired it with a black tight” as in pair of tights on one of those tv fashion features . Horrendous!

ukathleticscoach · 26/01/2026 13:18

Americanisms like gotten

WildFlowerBees · 26/01/2026 13:18

In the US the overuse of dude, every other word oh my god dude! Dude did you see that?! Yeah dude. Or just dude. Anything with dude. No.

Meal - hate the word for no rational reason I just hate it, always have.

People that state ‘here’s the truth’ what if it’s not ‘the’ truth? Mostly said by folk who like to be known as those who have inside knowledge into the workings of a human. Mel Robbins for example. Awful woman.

People who can’t just write so or articulate themselves in any other way so instead to make it dramatic write things like soooo.

Overuse of emojis, Hi girls 👧 looking for a favour please 🙏🏼 is anyone available to cut bubbas 👶🏻 hair next week? I’m sooo sad that he needs his first hair cut ☹️ if anyone can fit us in next week let me know 💕🥰😘😍

The word elevate used in a fashion context. ‘This plastic bag really elevates any outfit and makes the dirt on my trainers really pop’

I’m a menopausal intolerant old bag and the older I get the more I want to live in a cottage on my own cut off from the world.

dailyconniptions · 26/01/2026 13:19

All of these, plus I keep hearing abominations such as 'more lovelier'. WHY? It's more lovely, or lovelier.

Jumpeduppantrygirl · 26/01/2026 13:20

Can I get…?
My/our little family - see also ‘my babies’ for children
Hubby/Hubs
Myself/yourself
Normalcy. Fucking normalcy. I don’t get it at all…we already had a word - normality.

and…wait for it…

Coffeeishot · 26/01/2026 13:20

cantthinkofagoodusername1 · 26/01/2026 13:16

People saying they 'got a McDonald's' etc. You don't get a restaurant chain, you get items from that restaurant.

Tbf if someone says i had a burger and chips then someone willl say oh "where from, then you say Mcdonalds then they say which burger did you have... thats a lot of words, you can say i had a Mcdonalds cuts down the words.

ScrollingLeaves · 26/01/2026 13:20

‘Parenting’

‘I/he/she etc was sat..’ or ‘I was stood’

‘Gifting’

’Passed away’

Jumpeduppantrygirl · 26/01/2026 13:21

shit…normalcy was what you were waiting for!

Soashamed60 · 26/01/2026 13:21

On Mn, when a poster replies to op with:
"Ok Op I'll bite". Sounds so superior & smug

RaraRachael · 26/01/2026 13:22

dailyconniptions · 26/01/2026 13:16

It's still awful and annoying. It sounds so rude.

Edited

It's nof rude at all. It may be awful and annoying to you but there are regional variations in language throughout the UK.

I'd probably find some phrases you use awful and annoying but I'd realise that not everyone talks the same.

MiddleChildX · 26/01/2026 13:22

Grown women addressing me as…
Babe
girlie
hunni
chicka
or any other vom inducing ‘term of endearment’. I have a name. Use it.
The worst is Hun. Not least because I hail from the opposite side of the city…

ScrollingLeaves · 26/01/2026 13:22

‘Burger’ as it is ‘a hamburger’ like a hot dog is a frankfurter.

Pleasedontdothat · 26/01/2026 13:22

‘Gives me the ick’… shudder ..

JoyintheMorning · 26/01/2026 13:22

InterestedDad37 · 26/01/2026 13:01

Girlies' din dins (apostrophe indicates more than one girly)

Edited

Thank you I wasn't sure of the position for the apostrophe. It does say in the post "a group of. ."

Funnywonder · 26/01/2026 13:23

Ablondiebutagoody · 26/01/2026 11:56

Thriving

When talking about kids at school. They're just at school ffs. Sounds really smug to me.

Oh God yes! My two sons went through the transfer system to secondary education here in NI and I was on a Facebook group for support and info. There were so many children ‘thriving’ it’s a wonder this country isn’t the richest in the world with all the smart arses we have here🤣

The phrase I hate most is ‘use your words’. Awful, patronising phrase.

FranticFrankie · 26/01/2026 13:23

'Grab' as in coffee, some shopping etc
(Hate it- no grabbing in this house)
'It is what it is' - even typing that makes me irritated 😱 the worst phrase ever
'Literally' unless it is
'Reach out'
'Are you with me' - yes I'm not stupid, even if you're crap at explaining
'Myself and ....'

unapologetically me

ForPearlViper · 26/01/2026 13:24

Ducksbehindthesofa · 26/01/2026 12:19

Often paired with 'thinking outside the box' 😂

I particularly hate this one as, I feel, it should be essential to master 'thinking inside the box' first. It generally comes from someone with the common sense of a post box.
