To think I’ve been scammed by a seller on ebay

Tinyfrog200 · 24/01/2026 18:21

I ordered a phone for my Son from eBay (with buyer protection) I paid with PayPal. The seller chose ‘simple delivery’ 48 hour tracked service. On Thursday I received an email from Royal Mail to say the item had been delivered. I returned home, no red card, no sign of the parcel in the vicinity or with a neighbour. The photo proving ‘proof of delivery’ is really dodgy. Please see attached. EBay have closed my case, as the item has been delivered according to them!
The seller has been absolutely no help. I now need to wait 7 working days to raise a dispute with Royal Mail. I’m absolutely raging. I think I’ve been scammed.

There's no photo yet OP, but why do you think you've been scammed? Do you think Royal Mail didn't really deliver the parcel?

The photo doesn’t show a parcel actually being delivered. It looks like someone standing in a foyer of a commercial premises.

How do you think the seller is involved?

Whyherewego · 24/01/2026 18:29

Unless you have nominated a safe place or alternative delivery then you just need to reopen the case with ebay and provide a photo of your front door. If this is not your front door then you are in good place and can dispute it

Arlanymor · 24/01/2026 18:30

I am not sure why you think the seller has scammed you when it's a delivery issue that rests with Royal Mail/Parcelforce. It's fairly standard to have to wait for seven days to see if it goes back into the system again. You've got buyer protection so you should be fine, it's just frustrating having to wait. If it's not your front door then you have plenty of evidence to support the fact it's not been delivered.

jamandcustard · 24/01/2026 18:31

Huh? Why do you think the photo is dodgy?

Jumimo · 24/01/2026 18:32

Is the photo your doorway? Could the postie have left it and it’s been taken? I don’t see how the seller is scamming if Royal Mail have had the item.

Because proof of delivery should show an item being delivered - to someone at an open door for example. Also, the persons hand seems to be reasonably in focus but the address is very out of focus.

No, my house is a main door - not in a hallway of what looks like a business premises

This is a royal mail issue, not the fault of the seller. The seller isn't in control of RM. Not a scam, just poor delivery.

Thank you, I will take a photo of my front door and add this to an appeal.

Mine are always a photo of the parcel left in our unlocked front porch. You don’t have to be stood there parcel in hand. To them this is proof enough of delivery.

You still haven't explained how you think the seller has orchestrated this.

Jumimo · 24/01/2026 18:39

If that’s not your door then the postie has messed up (or stolen your parcel), not the eBay seller.

TikTokker · 24/01/2026 18:41

That’s not a scam, it’s a theft.

Tinyfrog200 · 24/01/2026 18:45

Thank you for all the replies. Scams are becoming more and more sophisticated. Something similar happened to me on eBay recently. I will take this up with Royal Mail.

No, this is fine for proof of delivery.

The issue is that RM sent it to the wrong place. It's not a scam.

BruisedNeckMeat · 24/01/2026 18:48

What happens if you put the tracking number directly into the RM website?

I had a similar issue recently and it was a sophisticated scam. EBay reopened the dispute and refunded me.

PrincessASDaisy · 24/01/2026 18:53

To me the photo doesn’t show the door it was delivered to. However I’d say it was stolen, either after it was left, or it wasn’t left at all

It says item delivered unfortunately.

I feel this may be a scam as the seller has only one other transaction, they have also been absolutely no help in trying to have this resolved. I have now made an appeal to eBay.

It’s a photo of the parcel being delivered!
what you need to do is to either catch your post person and ask them where it’s been delivered to or post on your local Facebook group and ask if anyone has received it or knows where abouts the place is in the photo

Once the seller has posted the item, it is outside their control. There is nothing they can do to influence where Royal Mail delivers the package.

Did you pay via PayPal and use the business option or did you pay using friends and family?

SergeMarge · 24/01/2026 19:12

If the tracking for Royal Mail has your postcode then the parcel was sent to you. The problem is that Royal Mail have delivered this to the wrong place. Your issue is with them and you need to go through them.

The seller is the one who can claim compensation though, you can’t do that as you’re not the sender of the parcel. So they should be helping you by opening a case with Royal Mail for compensation due to the parcel being delivered to the wrong place.
