To think I’ve been scammed by a seller on ebay

Tinyfrog200 · 24/01/2026 18:21

I ordered a phone for my Son from eBay (with buyer protection) I paid with PayPal. The seller chose ‘simple delivery’ 48 hour tracked service. On Thursday I received an email from Royal Mail to say the item had been delivered. I returned home, no red card, no sign of the parcel in the vicinity or with a neighbour. The photo proving ‘proof of delivery’ is really dodgy. Please see attached. EBay have closed my case, as the item has been delivered according to them!
The seller has been absolutely no help. I now need to wait 7 working days to raise a dispute with Royal Mail. I’m absolutely raging. I think I’ve been scammed.

Mine are always a photo of the parcel left in our unlocked front porch. You don’t have to be stood there parcel in hand. To them this is proof enough of delivery.

Your post is irrelevant because that’s not OPs front door or porch and she doesn’t have the foggiest idea where it is!!!

I feel like sometimes people just have to have their say on here!

No, this is fine for proof of delivery.

The issue is that RM sent it to the wrong place. It's not a scam.

It’s not fine for proof of delivery because it’s not proof of delivery to the OPs address.

fatphalange · 24/01/2026 19:16

That photo looks like it’s been taken in a Royal Mail distribution centre. Sometimes I’ve had to go and collect parcels from my local one if I’ve missed a delivery.

It's not irrelevant. OP seems to think that the eBay seller has scammed her, and won't accept that's not the case. This is a delivery issue, not a scam.

I agree!

So the issue is with the delivery. You understand that?
The seller hasn’t scammed you. Royal Mail have messed up

LVhandbagsatdawn · 24/01/2026 19:18

I really doubt the seller is involved OP. If they bought the delivery label through eBay then eBay will automatically populate it with your information and issues the tracking number - the seller has no control over that.

I can't see how they could manage to get eBay to generate a fake tracking number.

The seller will be no help because this isn't their issue to solve. This is Royal Mails issue to solve, but eBay will also see that the seller hasn't done anything wrong.

Have you double checked the address you gave was correct? If it is, keep pushing eBay / Royal Mail.

POTC · 24/01/2026 19:18

The seller doesn't choose simple delivery, they have no say in it. Ebay took away any choice for sellers. They also therefore cannot do anything to help you resolve it, the entire thing is managed by Ebay. The seller gets a prepaid label with the address you gave Ebay, they cannot modify in any way. The seller has done nothing wrong so yes yabu

It actually is up to the seller if a compensation claim to Royal Mail needs to be made, as the seller is the only one who can do that. You can’t make a claim as the receiver of a parcel.

If the postage bought doesn’t allow for compensation then the seller still needs to refund (well, eBay need to and they can choose to get the money from the seller if they want).

But to make those things happen, the OP needs Royal Mail to accept and admit that the parcel wasn’t delivered to the right place.

How do you know it’s not a scam?!

Could they have delivered it to themselves at work? Does the proof of delivery have your address on the document?

Hibernatingsloth · 24/01/2026 19:21

OP, Royal Mail will have coordinates that can track the parcel to a very specific location.
Sometimes these coordinates/map will be visible to you on a link under the photo.
But even if they're not, Royal Mail will have them.
So very easy to dispute/prove a delivery location.

No it isn't, not for eBay simple delivery.

It's for eBay to deal with. Not the seller.

Simple Delivery

I'd pop down to my local Royal Mail sorting office and ask for advice. I've done this before and they've been really helpful

Tinyfrog200 · 24/01/2026 19:21

Because the seller has dispatched the package via Royal Mail. Royal Mail accepted it, attempted to deliver it, and you have viewed photographic evidence that is in Royal Mail's possession on their own website. How on earth do you think the seller could have any influence on this?

Well then eBay needs to make the claim with Royal Mail because the OP can’t. She isn’t the sender.

A previous poster said she was also a victim to a sophisticated scam.

It says item delivered unfortunately.

I feel this may be a scam as the seller has only one other transaction, they have also been absolutely no help in trying to have this resolved. I have now made an appeal to eBay.

But the postman is not outside your house. How could the seller be responsible for that? You say they're not helpful but it's meant to go through eBay. If they sent it and RM says sent they're hardly just going to send the money back no questions asked.

Information I’ve been given by eBay is that the Seller must contact Royal Mail. The seller isn’t responding to my recent messages. Thanks to everyone who has given helpful advice.

I'm sure they were. But that's not what's happening here, because you have proof that your parcel has been accepted by Royal Mail, and is in its network.

Royal Mail have obviously delivered it to the wrong address. I don’t understand why you think the seller would be involved or you’ve been scammed? Mistakes happened and you’ll be able to make a claim through PayPal or against Royal Mail.

Seller probably can’t be bothered, but that’s not the same as a scam, just that the seller has been paid so isn’t making any effort to contact RM.
