Decent Americans are standing up to tyranny and dictatorship.

My US friends are so fed up it's hard to convey into words so I can't say I'm surprised. I am however deeply concerned. Yes, something has to give and this is the start I believe. The fact that fed judges are blocked from investigating the murder of Renee Good is contributing to fuelling the anger. And the doubling down on horrible tactics like sending preschoolers into detention centres... and believe me, the whole Greenland debacle and shitting on allies is not going down well either. Not everyone there is an 'ugly' American. Many very decent people are heartbroken and angry about what's going on, BUT... this is possibly the excuse that the administration is waiting for to invoke martial law and cancel elections. Any resistance to any oppressive regime has a difficult line to tread and this is the case now. I am worried about the potential for escalation and wish to God Republicans and Dems would finally work together to impeach. Enough of this.

StandFirm · 24/01/2026 10:29

Correction on the above: should say federal 'prosecutors' not judges... post sentiment remains unchanged.

NoKidsSendDogs · 24/01/2026 18:44

I hope it happens nationwide. We need this disgusting administration of grifters and pedophiles gone.

DdraigGoch · 24/01/2026 18:51

Now another person has been murdered by ICE in the streets of Minneapolis.

ooscal · 24/01/2026 18:57

You'd have to hope that the military generals will refuse to obey orders re martial law, if it comes to that.

It's the only way out I think, refusal by the military and a general strike. So that's the people and their protectors saying enough is enough.

But I don't know what will happen. Hopefully impeachment or some other mechanism to get rid of the Marmalade Moron. It's time.....

ooscal · 24/01/2026 18:58

The man killed today has already been tried and found guilty. He had a gun, or so they say.

Yes it's time for elected representatives in America to deal with their very big problem i.e. the lunatic that is trashing their Country and it's worldwide reputation.

This link (not at all graphic, don't worry) shows the moments before the shooting. The bearded man in brown is the person who was shot. He is filming with a phone. I don't see a gun....

@ooscal

I have seen the shooting video. This man is being held down by a group of about 5 or 6 ice officers. I really do not see how he presented any kind of threat. Surely this will bring down the government?

Hmmmnmmn · 24/01/2026 19:04

If it happens all over can't trump bring in the army and declare it an emergency like they do in wars then stop any further elections?
So upsettingly I don't think that would be for the best. We need Trump gone

fashionqueen0123 · 24/01/2026 19:04

Funny how some Americans say they want guns to be able to defend themselves against the government because I don’t think they’d ever actually do it. Like are they seriously going to start a civil war? Of course not

fashionqueen0123 · 24/01/2026 19:05

Not being able to go after Renee’s murderer and investigate it is disgusting

GlobalSpinNumpty · 24/01/2026 19:07

From the Guardian:

‘The Minneapolis Star Tribune has namedthe person shot dead by the federal authorities this morning as Alex Jeffrey Pretti, 37, from south Minneapolis.

‘The main newspaper of the city has cited sources they cannot name but who are “familiar with the investigation.”.

‘City police chief Brian O’Hara earlier said the man, whom he did not name, had no serious criminal history and a record that showed parking tickets.

‘The Guardian has not independently received confirmation of the victim’s identity but we are monitoring all legitimate news sources closely and making inquiries and will bring you the news as it develops.’

Live: Federal agents shot and killed Minneapolis man; DHS officials say he was armed

A bystander video shows several agents wrestling with the man on a city sidewalk moments before the shooting. Police chief Brian O’Hara issued a plea for calm as protesters gathered at the scene: “Please do not destroy our own city.”

The crazy thing is the people saying they need guns to protect themselves against an overbearing government are - on the whole - the people who vote for Trump.

Edited

I saw this earlier, but am not sure if it is actually from DHS. It was on the Sky News timeline, and it's still there so I presume it's legitimate. So like I said, guilty until innocent. And there's a picture of "the" gun obviously....

Funny how the exact same people saying this are the ones who are the loudest and proudest defenders of "the right to bear arms".

It was not drawn. It was not used to threaten anyone. It was in his belt and was removed by ICE well before they murdered him.

I think we have enough problems in our own country without being overly involved in the US! Or haven't you noticed?

Given the UKs vulnerability to similar political messages (blame all our ills on immigrants, ignore the role of the ultra-wealthy in our growing inequality, reduction in living standards and loss of social/economic mobility) I think we should watch the US very carefully.

There are people here who would love to push our country further down that path - all to their own personal gain.

Christ on a bike.
What happens in the US affects us all.
Apart from anything else there are blatant attempts to interfere with our politics.
Also see Trump trying to grab parts of the world, apease Putin, set tarriffs to blackmail countries, including us, which don’t do whatever he wants.
Do you follow the news at all???

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 25/01/2026 09:36

If the US goes down we all do.

Pensions. Shares Cost of living politics all affected

So it's critical this gets sorted.

I'm starting to think US govt is worse than the Kremlin It's turning into some sort of Wild West

At least the Russian
Govt push you out of a window and then lie about it if they want you gone.

What's happening in Minnesota is lawless and blatant in an age of social
Media too.

You have to be joking. This time last year Trumps tariffs war meant plenty of people in the UK lost thousands of pounds (thankfully it’s come back but at the time it was terrible!)
Hes now threatening the same again.

And that’s before we get started on the Ukraine Russia stuff!

He isn't going to come for their guns. That would really start a war/see him gone

fashionqueen0123 · 25/01/2026 10:46

So it seems like the man who was murdered was an ICU nurse who was trying to help the women who had been pepper sprayed.

Who is going to be next?

Not true. People seem to keep forgetting that Trump got the majority (if it was even a fair election) of 30%. Only 30% of people voted. Many of these people decided to sit on their asses and do nothing, but that doesn't make them trump supporters. Hopefully this is what it will take for people to finally step up and say no. The 2nd ammendment was created to prevent exactly what is happening now. I can't imagine the don't tread on me libertarians are happy about what is happening and maybe now there will be a civil war and hopefully trump is handled, Gaddafi style.

We will see.

If we don't keep Reform out, the US's problems will become ours.
