Are ring doorbells worth it?

Are ring doorbells worth it? Not sure if it would be worth me buying one or not.

I love mine. I have a young baby and dogs so it's great for knowing if I need to answer the door or not urgently. Plus ours has an alert so I can pop my dd down safe if I need to in advance. Currently pregnant so its worth its weight in gold

Overtheatlantic · 21/01/2026 20:02

Absolutely worth it. We were told by the police to install one after a problem with our next door neighbour. They used the footage to build a case against him for theft.

Childanddogmama · 21/01/2026 20:03

They are great. If it's a delivery and you are busy, for example, you can just ask them to leave it there and then you can grab it when it's more convenient.

Notsuchafattynow · 21/01/2026 20:07

Yes, handy to screen who is at the door before I open it, while sat at my desk. I can avoid interuptions while WFH.

Also thought the recording function was good from a security perspective. I'll probably get more cameras for round the back.

MrsJamin · 21/01/2026 20:10

It's a data privacy nightmare. No. There are decent alternatives with less suspicious features which don't need a subscription. Eg reolink.

BobbyBrewstersMagicTorch · 21/01/2026 20:12

Eufy ones are better as there's no subscription to pay

lostarc · 21/01/2026 20:15

I didn’t want a door bell as I hear about them being vandalised and removed. We opted for a camera instead. It’s by Tapo and cost about £30 from Argos. We also paid £29 for 12 months back up and recording.

simpleoldpimple · 21/01/2026 20:15

Yes, I bought a cheap brand one and it was rubbish, by the time it connected the person had left, or just didn’t pick up anyone at all!

The subscription is annoying, but worth it for peace of mind. Just make sure you get one with a chime - I didnt and could really do with one but they are bloody pricey on their own! 😂

Chiseltip · 21/01/2026 20:21

You'll never have another TV Licence "inspector" at your door again.

They avoid them like the plague.

Who knew!

user1471453601 · 21/01/2026 20:29

I'm very frail and my adult child has one on both doors.

if they and their partner go away, they intervene with any delivery or visitors to our door to stop them.

They are well worth it imo.

Abala67 · 21/01/2026 20:36

For us, no, as the time lag is too long between the doorbell being pressed and the alert on our phones.

Nearlyamumoftwo · 21/01/2026 20:38

@healthanxietynightmarehaven't read all the replies but I think it's only worth it if you have the subscription. The subscription gives you a history of who's been there, without you just get a live view (still helpful to know if it's a delivery guy though!)

Talipesmum · 21/01/2026 21:43

Ours is worth it to us without a subscription - we wanted to be able to hear the doorbell going off on our phones and around the house (old one was rubbish), and we wanted to be able to speak live to people at the door when we weren’t home (eg ask delivery person to try next door if we were out). Also to know when people were coming and going (younger teens getting home from school when we weren’t there).

But we don’t have any security concerns and didn’t bother paying for the recordings subscription - feels a little less big brother that it’s not all stored somewhere, but if you did want that feature, go for one of the other doorbells like eufy where you don’t have to pay extra every month for it.

edited to add - without the subscription you get a basic history of motion at the door going back several weeks, and when the bell was rung, so I can sensibly assume that the motion at 3.45 is child getting back from school - but I can’t watch the video back. I get a buzz alert when there’s motion though and can see who it is live if I want.

SuperGinger · 21/01/2026 22:01

I'm not a massive fan, although it was useful when we were on hols as I knew when the cat sitter came. Overall I preferred our old doorbell

EmeraldShamrock000 · 21/01/2026 22:06

Yes, excellent. I had my first experience of an unwelcome unknown drunk person at my door, had I not had the ring, I’d have opened the door.
Big fist pump.
It gives me a sense of security at night too, if I hear noises I can look on live.

healthanxietynightmare · 21/01/2026 22:15

Thanks everyone will have a look into them and the other ones suggested too. Thanks

Yes , excellent . Glad we have one . Great for seeing if my cat wants to come in and have caught a person trying to break into my car.

My cat sits on the little wall outside my front door when I leave. I get “animal detected” alerts continuously for an hour before she gives up waiting for me to get home 😆

Fidgety31 · 21/01/2026 22:20

Yes . It makes me feel safe in my house as I live alone ( with kids) . .i have the doorbell and security cameras and alarm . Pay for the subscription- worth every penny .

Reallyop😄😄

DH bought a n AOSU no subscription. I've had bad hips and one operation. It's been brilliant. Takes me ages to get to the front door at the moment so it's been very useful.

justasking111 · 21/01/2026 22:26

Police caught a car thief in our village. The daft beggar kept trying to get into cars there was loads of footage from different house holders.

MustDust · 21/01/2026 22:28

Yep, we a blink one cos it was cheaper and we missed so many deliveries due to lag and sound quality. Ring is amazing in comparison.

GoldenRiceCakes · 21/01/2026 22:29

I don’t think they deter people as I had a random guy kick my door at 2am and run away despite having a ring door bell 🤷‍♀️ and I see people stealing parcels from doors that have them too (pictures on fb)

Lol, it is true I have never had one around since I got the ring.

I really like mine from a security perspective. It is great as a visible crime deterrent.

gamerchick · 21/01/2026 22:33

They are.

However I wouldn't get a ring. They were great until.tnrh got greedy. Find an equivalent that gives cheap or free cloud storage
