Are ring doorbells worth it?

Are ring doorbells worth it? Not sure if it would be worth me buying one or not.

Mine had a time lag too. By the time it pinged my phone, the person had gone. I had to take it down and go back to knocking. It also used to sometimes not record people coming up the path. I used to check to make sure my young adult kids were home from nights out. But because it wasn't reliable, I didn't know if they were still out, or it just hadn't picked them up this time. It was a Ring doorbell I got free with something then paid monthly.

You do know there are non-surveillance doorbells available that do all that and won't be sold to ICE as a way of finding immigrants in the USA? You're ok paying for a service that makes you the collector of data which will be sold and someone else will profit? You might as well offer to pay to run an Amazon server in your house and for that data to be sold too.

Unfortunately everything we do nowadays that is "free" is at a cost to us all in some way. Ring is just one of many companies doing this.

We had a horrible neighbour opposite. A Ring doorbell would have caught him at his antics and put a stop to it. Unfortunately they weren't a thing back then.

We have a ring security light and camera. We do have the advantage of being set back a little from the road/path so no passing traffic. The camera switches on once someone steps onto the first step (ie on our property) and you can also speak to delivery drivers etc. At night the light switches on. We also have one in the back garden.

We get advance warning of a cat that's a bruiser and beats up our cat. Our door bell is also a speaker but I'm too slow to answer. DH can do it.

Anyone approaches our cars it goes off.

All you ring owners have a look at what they're rolling out now, mass surveillances by facial recognition using your doorbell. Well done slow hand clap

Hilarious that you don’t think this is already a thing on every camera everywhere.

bugalugs45 · 10/02/2026 14:48

I love mine , bought it on a Black Friday deal a few years back , yes the annual subscription cost is annoying but i wouldn’t be without it now

PollyPeep · 10/02/2026 14:53

Don't really see the point. I have a standard peep hole in the door if I need to check before I open. I can hear the door knock from anywhere in the house. The only reason I'd consider one is if I had a garden office and couldn't hear the door knock. The privacy issues far outweigh any perceived benefits, but we don't have any "smart" tech in our house so make of that what you will.

DJKATIE · 10/02/2026 14:59

Yes would never not have one now

ffsnewusername · 10/02/2026 15:02

Yes. The neighbours across from me are constantly rowing on the front, it saves me sticking my nose up against the window. I can watch and judge from the comfort of my couch.

PurpleThistle7 · 10/02/2026 15:05

We got one after a break in and it has made me feel a lot better. Nice to see when my kids get in after school and to avoid being disrupted while working if it’s just another flyer about window cleaning or whatever

GasPanic · 10/02/2026 15:31

Yes they are useful.

I work a long way away from my door, so it is useful to see who is there and what is happening.

It dings you when parcels arrive.

It also probably keeps people more honest, as these days people know there are cameras around and are less likely to take liberties (if they have any sense anyway).

Nofksleft2give · 10/02/2026 16:05

Genuine question…I thought you couldn’t film people without their permission, or “CCTV in operation” type signage? Is that not the case anymore?

Thecows · 10/02/2026 17:48

Haha brilliant!

Sgso · 10/02/2026 17:51

I switched from ring to eufy, I liked that you didn’t need a subscription to save the footage with eufy, just an sd card

purpleme12 · 10/02/2026 17:54

Depends really

We got it when our neighbours were harassing us so it was a godsend.

Then more recently actually managed to catch someone stealing something from our door and it was used in evidence to get a conviction on it and should be getting the money back for the thing he stole!

So it's definitely been worth it for us!

Imdunfer · 10/02/2026 17:57

We were plagued by a child ringing our bell and running away.

It stopped the moment the Ring doorbell went up.

Hilarious that you don’t think this is already a thing on every camera everywhere.

Hilarious that you think all doorbells do this! Ours doesn't talk to the cloud at all and is just on our WiFi. You have a choice to crowd source faces for Amazon to sell! Enjoy paying to be Jeff Bezos's minions.
