To ask if your teen DC vape?

Mumma1991 · 20/01/2026 23:42

Do your teen DC vape? My 17 year old DD has just started vaping and I’m furious as we are all non smokers in this household. Just wondering, out of interest, if anyone else’s teen DC vape and what did you do to try and stop them? Did it work or did they just keep on vaping? I’m determined to get DD to quit vaping but DH thinks it will be difficult due to her age!

The snuz pouches are a big risk for mouth cancer, all cancers are scary but mouth cancer is horrific and disfiguring. Show her pictures of it.

I’ve done this . Every time I find them I’m the house I throw them away. I’ve taken away privileges , removed pocket money from both and they just find another way (both got jobs) it’s such an intense addiction and I don’t know what else to do to stop them

JustNormalMen · 21/01/2026 15:26

18yo definitely not. She's not in a vaping crowd. If she were to do anything it would be cigarettes I think.

15yo I'm really not sure. She's much more exposed to the crowd that do vape. I haven't caught her yet, and foolishly hoped the fact that she plays a wind instrument at a high level, and two of her close mates are really into sport might put them all off; however this thread shows that's quite a mistaken idea!

A few lads in her year tried snus. They went in at too high a strength and were vomiting as a result. This came home as "Jimmy and Johnny were doing drugs in school". When it transpired it was snus, and her aged mother had recently tried it in the pub with friends who use it regularly, it became far less attractive.

MNLurker1345 · 21/01/2026 15:40

I am behind the times, what is snus?

JustNormalMen · 21/01/2026 16:14

@MNLurker1345 Snus is smokeless tobacco or nicotine. The ones you buy legally over here are nicotine, not tobacco. Comes in little pouches, like tiny teabags, that you rest against your gums and remove when done. People like it because being smokeless you can use it indoors.

in the nicest possible way, and meaning no disrespect - your teen sounds judgmental and frankly a little mean!

Tbf I'd be very surprised if the vapers didn't also laugh at PP DS and consider him a loser. To vape or not to vape is often associated with your tribe, with each one 'cringing' for the other for different reasons. Its often the case that some of the rule breakers give the righteous ones quite a hard time, so that might explain why he's mean about them. Was ever the way.

Oh thank you so for that. Ummm, things have moved on haven’t they. And no one would be any the wiser!

Also the pp threatening “scorched earth” over vapes! Just don’t. It’s not the hill to die on in the grand scheme of teen issues.

We were advised by older wiser parents of teens not to go nuclear. How right they were. Relationship with dd preserved so when the really bad thing happened she was able to come to us and we faced it together. Destroying trust over sodding vapes would
have been a huge mistake.

I agree. Of all the bad things teens can do, vaping is pretty tame. I wouldn’t lose my shit if my teen did it. I’d rather that than smoking.

My friends husband uses them, they are common in Sweden apparently. His teeth are horrible because of them.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 21/01/2026 16:23

Dd1 21 no, she has asthma and is into sport and so won’t even risk trying it.

dd2 yes. Since about 15 and she is now 18. I go on at her about the dangers all the time. She’s well aware but chooses to ignore. Just like me with smoking at the same age. Just hoping she grows out of it like I did.

I’ve noticed that smoking has come back into fashion with a vengeance. Early 20s don’t seem to be interested in vaping, just back on the 20 Marlboro Lights

If nothing else, how on earth can thy afford it?

FleetingPhilosophy · 21/01/2026 16:43

TheaBrandt1 · 21/01/2026 07:25

Hmm about those adamant no - are you quite sure about that?! It’s pretty endemic.

Dd2 did we found them at 15. We didnt get angry but did a big we are disappointed / health / if it carried on we will restrict freedom etc. She gave up (verified by reliable spies) but said it was difficult as all her group did. She and her best friend are the anomaly as the ones that don’t vape. Mixed state / private party set.

Yes I am sure. They always thought it was a pathetic habit in their teens, and still do in their early twenties.

How am I sure? In the same way as you are sure that your daughter and her best friends are the only ones that don’t vape now, I guess!

FleetingPhilosophy · 21/01/2026 16:45

CantThinkofaNam · 21/01/2026 08:57

Long term relationship? How do you even type that with a straight face. She is a child, it’s a joke you think she’s in an actual relationship. Some people are so quick to grow their kids up.

And they then are surprised when they get a teen pregnancy in the house.

Yes

So insightful! Thanks!

CraftyMintHedgehog · 21/01/2026 16:49

My 15 year old doesn't. He thinks its for "chavs".

There would be consequences if he did start vaping though!

Moveoverdarlin · 21/01/2026 16:50

Nope. They would take the piss out of kids that did.

FleetingPhilosophy · 21/01/2026 16:52

Yes, thankfully it seems to be seen as very uncool by many teens. More than cigarettes or other drugs from what I can see. And I had very uncool teens!

FatCatPyjamas · 21/01/2026 17:02

DS17 does since getting in with a crowd who all do. He has to leave it by the back door as soon as he gets in the house, and only vape outside. He was doing it out of the window in his room. When he started vaping at 16 his dad and I both gave him the "you realise it's crap for your health and a huge waste of money" talk, but we knew nothing we could say would stop him when out with friends.

DS15 thinks it's a ridiculous thing to do, and regularly jeers at his brother for being a "delinquent".

CondeNastTraveller · 21/01/2026 17:05

Well, as I said earlier, I was a smug parent once.. .

TheaBrandt1 · 21/01/2026 17:51

I am extremely far from a smug parent. Dd doesn’t vape - we have far bigger issues with her than that. In fact if your teen vaping is your biggest issue you’re actually doing pretty well.

youalright · 21/01/2026 17:55

FleetingPhilosophy · 21/01/2026 16:45

Well she hasn't got pregnant in 3 years and is on the pill. Don't you think teenagers have sex at least shes prepared and on birth control so less likely to get pregnant then a girl not on birth control having a one night stand

Imaginingdragonsagain · 21/01/2026 17:57

I don’t think so, they’re both quite sporty so I think they would avoid it

NeverHadHaveHas · 21/01/2026 17:57

FleetingPhilosophy · 21/01/2026 16:45

You realise the law allows people to have sex when they are 16? Do you think saying ‘not under my roof’ will stop 16 year olds having sex?

Thewonderfuleveryday · 21/01/2026 18:00

No. Eldest says the lads he knows who vape are dicks. Only one of his mates vape.
Youngest definitely doesn't, she's barely out of the house.

Iamsotiredandfedup · 21/01/2026 18:00

15 year old does, obviously I’m not thrilled but she’s generally a good kid

I do think she’ll stop on her own, she’s realising now that it’s a struggle to pay for nice things because she’s spending money on vaping. In the meantime any vape stuff I find goes in the bin, I won’t look for it but if it’s laying about it’s gone

PencilsInSpace · 21/01/2026 18:02

Experimentation is common in the teenage years, however the vast majority of children who vape regularly are current or ex-smokers and so may be using them for similar reasons as adult vapers.

There has been an alarming rise in the number of children who say they intend to try smoking. This is what happens when you convince them that vaping is just as bad, I suppose. Currently 63% of 11-17 incorrectly believe that vaping is as harmful or more harmful than smoking, up from 41% in 2022.
