Supermarket jute bags

DeckAllTheFlippinHalls · 19/01/2026 16:50

Hold onto your hats, this will be a most riveting thread.

Which supermarkets still sell the natural, jute bags? All my local supermarkets only ever seem to have the plasticky reusable bags. I see pictures of the (eg) Waitrose ones with ingredients written on them (goats cheese, chorizo) but I haven’t seen them in a shop for ages.

AIBU for not being able to find them?
AIBU to start an incredibly dull thread?

I got one in Sainsburys just before Christmas.

It has a peacock on it.

I don’t actually know but I just wanted to say that I actually AM riveted by this thread. Following with interest.

ArticWillow · 19/01/2026 17:01

Lidl does.

Bert2e · 19/01/2026 17:03

I bought mine on Amazon as I couldn't find any.

dailyconniptions · 19/01/2026 17:05

Waitrose still do.

I’m not sure who I judge more - me for starting it, or you for being interested 😂

I feel like there always used to be lots, normally on the end of an aisle somewhere. But they seem to have vanished. Perhaps it’s just my area, maybe there’s a boycott I don’t know about 🤔

I just googled and the one i have is currently being sold for 8.69 on ebay! I think i paid £1.50 so maybe there is some sort of shortage and they're now on the black market!

DeckAllTheFlippinHalls · 19/01/2026 17:09

Local supermarkets I’ve tried: Asda, Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Morrisons

Lidl is only in the next town over, as is M&S

Not jute, but Booths do nice cloth ones.

Shinyandnew1 · 19/01/2026 17:22

Waitrose do some nice Emma Bridgewater ones but they are all plasticky.

I actually haven't see any Jute ones for ages! Have the shops stopped selling them??

DeckAllTheFlippinHalls · 19/01/2026 18:07

@Shinyandnew1 this is my thinking..! All I’ve seen are the plasticky ones and they never feel as strong as the jute ones.

Right, while we're on bags. How annoying are the big ones with tiny handles that you cant sling over your shoulder!

Sminty2 · 19/01/2026 19:00

Best bag ever, £15. I bought it at Waitrose a year or so ago. It’s huge, has big and small handles to go over shoulder and fits lots in. Has a nice lining to stop leaks spoiling the outside.
EBay have them now sometimes which is where I got the picture as my bag is in the car and it’s raining.

I like the big shopper bags in seasalt. Do you use Vinted? Loads of jute bags on there, including Waitrose ones. Easier to get one there and get it sent to you than trapise round looking for them.

noctilucentcloud · 19/01/2026 19:29

I noticed the same OP. I have some jute bags that have done me 15 years, I use them every shop and when I go away but a couple are showing their age now. I wondered if the jute bags were a bit too durable for the supermarkets...

JaceLancs · 19/01/2026 19:32

Tkmaxx do some amazing jute bags, our Sainsburys still sell them as does Waitrose - Tesco only have them occasionally
I have about 6 which I keep folded in boot of car - not seen a Lidl or Aldi one recently though

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 19/01/2026 19:45

I've had had some from whistlefish online... they used to do lovely ones with art on but currently just seem to be plain colours. The small ones are in the sale. I think its only sainsburys i have seen them recently and i wasnt fussed on the colour or design.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 19/01/2026 19:46

Not a jute bag but I got a really old fashioned, string shopping bag from M&S about a year ago. Wish I’d got more, never seen them again and I love it. It’s tiny until you need it, holds SO much and its strong

StonwEd · 19/01/2026 19:47

My kind of thread. This might be a step too far but I stock up in E.Leclerc whenever I'm in France. They're lovely and usually have bright coloured writing and handles and the message on them is in French and usually translates as something like "in my car, not in nature".
I use them in England as I like people to think i am French or just cooler than them. In reality no one has ever, not once, noticed and I'm a complete loser. The Super U material ones are fab too.

I'll get my manteau.

DeckAllTheFlippinHalls · 19/01/2026 19:49

You might be onto something there @noctilucentcloud!

It’s such a stupid thing really!
I’m not desperately traipsing around every shop looking for one, but it’s been in my head for ages that mine need replacing, and now it’s become a ‘thing’ because I never see them anymore.

NewYearNewMee · 19/01/2026 19:50

I use the Booths fabric ones, I have some jute ones from places like borough market / fortnums though which last forever!

SharpPoet · 19/01/2026 19:53

I’m still using my Tesco/Cath Kidson bags from years ago - they are seriously strong and get used for everything

Leclerc have nice big square ones with slogans on. You need a trip to France!

*Facebook link, as like another poster I'm not getting up to get photograph mine. Wink

I had a look at one of mine while I passed through the kitchen but didn't take a photo. This link doesn't work for me but I do want to share the lovely bags with everyone!
