Just read this online and it sounded like a classic AIBU so thought the good citizens of Mumsnet democracy should be allowed to consider.

'A stranger handed me a note saying I was speaking too loud in a cafe - it was mortifying' Metro | News story

YABU - Team green pen - talking lady is BU and should shh
YANBU - Team cat owner - note leaver was nosey and pass agg

I think you can typically tell if someone is speaking to someone who has hearing loss vs. someone who is just loud. It's not just volume, it's about speaking more slowly, enunciating clearly and directly addressing the listener.

Biwell they be hated by 90% of people on this thread then you just " hate loud people" or think they are seeking attention

I think this is a case where one person being a wanker doesn't cancel out the other person's wankeriness.

TABBU (they are both being unreasonable).

Wanker Cafe

The person making the noise is being rude but unconsciously so. Green pen woman is being very rude and doing so consciously. She repeats back details of the conversation she can hear! Unforgivably rude. The tone of the letter is condescending. The use of the semi-colon, the "your voice, volume of" . Who is she? Lady Violet from Downton Abbey?

As I get older my ability to hear things in noisy places has got worse. But I recognise that's more of a problem of my hearing rather than the people making the noise. Green pen lady is far too sure of herself for that.

SweetcornFritter · 19/01/2026 17:11

I asked someone (female) in a busy pub to please stop talking very loudly (and drunkenly) right by my ear and was called a posh c*nt and told repeatedly to fuck off. Won’t be doing that again…

"Your voice, volume of" made me laugh, I can't lie.

Yabu for sure.
I cannot stand people and their loud tedious voices and conversations that drown out everything.
Ghastly people without a drop of basic msnners, cop on or self awareness.

UnhappyHobbit · 19/01/2026 17:19

I don’t think people realise how loud they are. I had an experience last week in a steam room in a spa, everyone else was quiet and respectful but these two women wouldnt shut up and were very loud, but also talking about nothing which made it more irritating.

Charlize43 · 19/01/2026 17:19

I am absolutely dumbstruck and speechless at this!

With all the stuff going on in the World at the moment, how does such tosh find it's way into print - in a newspaper?!!!

BillieWiper · 19/01/2026 17:24

She named her two rescue moggies after a fashion label and diffusion line of that same fashion label?! And shouts about it in cafes? So loudly that a group of four are unable to hear eachother speak?

And implies that people who write in cursive must be cunts. (Ie presumably old and middle class) So not trendy and cool enough for her and her luxury fashion fleabags?!

Both sound like hard work but I'm more on the side of green pen for some reason...

BagaChips · 19/01/2026 15:11

One of my friends is extremely loud, whenever we go out I notice people staring at her. We've gently tried to tell her to tone it down but it doesn't happen. It embarrasses and irritates me sometimes and I'm her friend, so I can only imagine how annoying it must be for people that really don't want to hear her stories

I feel your pain. My niece is the same, and if she talked about anything more interesting than ( redacted!) , ( redacted!) , and ( redacted! ) it wouldn’t be so awkward. Unfortunately she would remember a polite request to tone it down, she has a memory like an elephant and can recall conversations word for word years later, so it wouldn’t be seen as a gentle nudge but as a full on assault to be brought up for years to come.

What subject would have suited you?

I think even Id draw the line at apprending the drunk & loud in a pub TBH. Bold move.

ThatCraftySquid · 19/01/2026 17:32

I don't agree that's rude. She had a message to put through to someone, she wasn't rude or confrontational, she made her point. She addressed the person directly, a message is a direct reply too.

It's not like she took a photo and starting ranting on their local FB group, she kept her complaint private and direct. Good on her.

The one who made it public is loud woman, pretending she was mortified - she can't have been that mortified if she ran to the papers?

SurferRona · 19/01/2026 17:35

Beautiful handwriting and a well-judged semi-colon?! 10/10. Gorgeous. Loud people are massively annoying when that close to you. And yes, I include children in that too. I would move, if not, yes, leave.

Nanny0gg · 19/01/2026 17:35

KidsDoBetter · 19/01/2026 15:09

I must confess I once told a young woman on a plane who spoke at top volume and literally did not draw breath for 2hrs to STFU … Slightly more politely than that. But not much.

She was EXHAUSTING to listen to and pierced through my sound cancelling headphones with her utter inanity.

As someone whose natural volume isn’t particularly quiet (but nothing out of the ordinary) I have learnt to be really really tone my volume out and about. Other people should be aware too. Normally a surprised dirty look does the trick.

What response did you get??

TomatoSandwiches · 19/01/2026 17:37

I think sometimes the issue is the loudness AND the pitch or tone, some peoples voices go right through you, I have actually walked out of places before because of it and requested a different talking therapist once.

NoSoupForU · 19/01/2026 17:43

I think she sounds insufferable. I quite like the note actually. I think its more impactful than just asking someone to quieten down. But it doesn't really help in the here and now does it?

The cat woman is clearly an attention seeking dickhead who's lacking in self awareness.

ChattyCatty25 · 19/01/2026 17:49

Note leaver is unreasonable. If you want quiet, go to a library.

SurferRona · 19/01/2026 17:53

JFC. Those names for her cats?! My eyes are bleeding!!! (And I ❤️ Prada)

Shock. And then she did indeed stfu. He companion looked relieved imo. He’d not said a word for the 2hrs. They were work friends or acquaintances of some kind.

FrodoBiggins · 19/01/2026 15:07

Yes I think I'm erring towards, as @MyThreeWords put it, TABBU - although note giver might be conflict adverse rather than just shady. I do hate people with loud voices in shared spaces though, on par with people on their phones on a train so we can hear their half of their (never interesting) conversation.

Conflict averse is shady. It's just a different word for a context specific version of cowardice.

Ducksbehindthesofa · 19/01/2026 18:13

Ms Talkyloudly is BVVVU, but for what she said about the note writer's handwriting.

My writing is not too dissimilar. Yes, I'm aware it's an 'olds' style handwriting, but I am old), and I'm quite miffed about her disparaging remark about the type of person it portrays.

Legend, thanks.

Highlights

  • that her husband made the post. Reminded me of that guy who was angry that his wife didn't get her grated cheese (just me?)
  • the people saying that "we know the name of your cats" could be read as a threat 😂
  • she was a FEW TABLES AWAY!!

I'm firmly team green pen now I know they weren't at the next table. Paulina needs to stop being excited about her "fur babies".

God the husband and wife both sound insufferable. And the names of the cats 🙄
