Have we got nothing better to think about than Greenland??

I cannot believe this is dominating the national discussion.

The NHS is fucked
Thousands of undocumented people are entering our country (directly causing an increase in racist sentiment)
The UK is seen as being on a downward spiral in general

Let Denmark work it out.

Surely we have better things to be focusing on!

Christ on a bike. What an idiotic OP. Must be a wind up, it doesn't deserve a reply.

How the so-called "patriots" expose themselves.

Fermenting division, littering our built environment with tatty old flags, now they want us to abandon our allies to the lunatic in the White House.

Even Farage knows this is a loser, which is why he's suddenly disappeared from the airwaves.

Can I just add to the tatty old flags party?

I think you meant tatty old upside down flags?

Imagine having a viewpoint so ignorant and insular that you post an embarrassing thread like this.

I'm amazed they had time tbh, I mean there must be some lampposts that still need flags on?

BlanketyBlankBlank · 19/01/2026 14:39

Yes and at that point they picked GB up and moved it to another continent…. Didn’t they?

OP must think so. I was being sarcastic. Sorry if that was unclear.

Im hoping you are a reform type shill

Otherwise, you are awfully naive. Upending peace will affect everything.

At a basic level, just for starters everything will get more expensive, medicines will be more expensive....

Everything will be worse.

This type of post exactly that. There is no way any remotely sensible person would write it but this is how the US got themselves into this mess and we are following suit.

It starts with the ‘suggestions’ that a country should have other priorities…. Not be so worried about global issues and heads down the more isolationist, every country for themselves route that the far right exploit.

Op - Trump is attempting to BLACKMAIL Europe and the UK into allowing him to invade and take over another country by threatening us with economic sanctions if we don’t comply! So let’s forget Greenland then for a minute. Trump says 100% tariffs on the UK if we don’t give US companies full access into the NHS and our health market. That ok?? You happy with that because he’s already alluded to it previously and if we don’t stand together with Europe against him, we’d be fucked.

If nato collapses so will peace so the nhs waiting lists will not be of any consequence. Try educating yourself about the wider world and you will understand

Reading through this and Mumsnet really need to bring back the Laughing Emoji or at least install a 'shocked face'. ;)

Im with op. Not many people know this but when we left the eu the british Isles themselves were actually picked up and moved to the other side of the moon. We literally left europe so not sure what it's got to do with us. We have no geographical, political, financial, defensive or other connections to any other countries especially not the rest of your Europe. 🙃

peacefulpeach · 19/01/2026 14:46

@Mranke I’ve answered your question above. To a very very high level. But I hope it makes sense. Look online to find more information.

I’m sorry people are being rude, on this thread. The answer to ignorance is education and understanding.

Anyway - do you understand at least a bit more, why the Greenland issue is important, now?

This is a worry as well as him trying to get us to lower our food standards so they can import more of their substandard food products to UK.

Denmark is a NATO country. An attack on one is an attack on all. Trump threatening to invade Greenland is the same thing as Trump threatening to invade Europe - hopefully you can see why that is such as significant problem. And that's before you get into the question of the potential breakup of NATO (the USA is also a NATO country), which is our best and only safeguard against Russian aggression in Europe. So conflicts like the one in Ukraine could start rolling out across Europe. It might seem like not much now, but it is the first domino in a row of potentially catastrophic dominoes.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/01/2026 14:50

@trappedCatAsleepOnMe have you read the book “ultra processed people”? It’s scary enough to read about UPF in the uk. Then you read about what goes on in the USA and it will keep you awake at night. That’s without all the other food standard protections we have in place here, many of which are thanks to the EU. So yes, I 100% agree with you.

Sorry for the tangent.

Greenland really trumps it all if it were to happen. It would signal the end of NATO.

YourBrickTiger · 19/01/2026 14:54

I'm not sure there is any point reasoning or trying to educate in this situation - this is exactly the type of discussion that I had with my friend in America and she cannot see anything wrong with what Trump is doing. To hell with the rest of the world.

Let Europe work it out.

(And yes, I wanted to shout that!)

We might not be in the EU, but we are still in continental Europe. If the people in Greenland and Denmark don't want to sell it, and Trump decides to take it by force, he's attacking a NATO ally. We aren't in the EU now, but we are still a part of NATO, so we would be bound to step in to protect Greenland from invasion, which means a war with the US. Anyone of fighting age is at risk from conscription (ask the younger generation in Ukraine what they thought they'd be doing in 2026 5 years ago), so yes, it's very important!

A potential war between Europe (which we are part of, geography if not politically) and the US is a pretty big deal. It doesn't mean the other things aren't important, just that it is currently the most acute.

In the same way diabetes or a heart defect might be your most important health issues, but if you brake your leg, that's probably what the Dr is going to be talking to you about that week

Edited

I don't think Europe is in a position to take on Russia and the USA.
