To think Reform could be a little less smug?

Top of the polls, defections, no doubt do very well in the local elections in May.

But could they be a little less smug about it all? I’m not saying they shouldn’t big up the good stuff (from their perspective) that’s going on but they’re treating the next election like it’s in the bag.

I’m not sure it’s a terribly good look.

Any political party, seemingly at the top of the polls, are always smug. That’s politics.

Yep, right there with you in Scotland. They’ll get in. The newspapers win again. Beyond predictable.

Apologies from English voters (and understanding how some US voters feel right now)

Yes it is? No one has said that immigration doesn't need addressing, so rather an inflammatory statement here?
So a considered, thought out approach to immigration, without misinformation, exaggeration and vile hate mongering, that looks to manage down immigration, its impact on sectors of the economy, addressing issues like integration, language, culture, trade and investment, without the hate... would be useful ...
Ie the opposite of reform in terms of approach
And also dealing with the 1001 other issues that are really causing the decline of the country as well perhaps?

Who is offering that? Nobody

TempestTost · 19/01/2026 18:26

Are they more smug than other parties in a similar position?

To be fair I don’t think any party has ever been in this position. They’ve all of six or seven MPs and are posting that they’re the “official opposition” - no, there’s three other parties in parliament with more seats than them aside from the Labour Party. They’re not even close to being the opposition. That alone is spitting in the face of our democracy.

Wow
Most parties are? Both re immigration and other policies.
Whether I agree with them or not is another matter
But reform are just a one trick pony and full of vile hatred and misinformation

Oh lordy. This is painful. Reform are largely a monster of the lefts making.

Knew it wouldn't be down to Nige. Never takes responsibility for anything, whether it's his schoolboy racism or even buying his own house in his constituency

chaosmaker · 19/01/2026 20:02

Populism, exactly how the 3rd Reich started out. Bread and circuses until the true horror of what the people voted in became obvious.
Othering in order to commit appalling acts that the people went along with and when they started to object became victims of it themselves.
History is pointless unless we pay attention and don't repeat the mistakes of the past. (and fail to support all the socialism like the NHS etc after WWII)

When Reform do really badly, which they will do, it will still be the left's fault.

Same way as anything Trump does wrong is always blamed on the Democrats.

This country will hammer the final nail into its own coffin of terminal decline if it elects such charlatans as a Government. The people who vote for them won’t be looking remotely smug a few years later.

Bit like the smug lefties voting for Labour. Just like Carol Vorderman, they've gone very quiet.

You know what? This is the shit I hate. “Lefties this lefties that liberals this liberals that”

politely, who gives a fuck? We’re all on this planet for far too short a time and none of it matters. Is it that hard to be respectful?

Not many respectful posts so far. Plenty of predictable insults though. @PersephonePistol politics is competitive so why do you think the party ahead in the polls shouldn't be so smug? Do you expect a football team not to celebrate when the opposition scores an own goal?

Yes you are painful
I understand that if politics moves to the left, then others will move to the right
I also understand that many feel labour have let them down
But no, reform are predominantly born out of misinformation and hatred

Yes, preferably before voting. The day after the Brexit referendum, a trending search on Google from UK residents was "what is the EU?"

Your likely Google suspects were probably drawn from the several million tourists and visitors in the UK at the time of the referendum (June), millions more residents who were ineligible to vote (foreign nationals and those under 18) etc.

Rubbish @Clavinova

Large part of the vote was a protest against DC and his smugness and you know it. Most didn’t understand the full implications and the vote was heavily influenced by polluted SM as we all now know. People genuinely didn’t have a clue hence the google search.

Nice attempt to rewrite history.

Abd80 · 19/01/2026 21:52

Smugness is nothing compared to the rest of their faults.

gezzab33 · 19/01/2026 22:01

I don't understand how the used car salesman that gave us Brexit is now being believed again with another bunch of lies. As if he cares one jot about the poor or vulnerable. Look across the water and see where this ends if you believe this shite again. I need leaders with moral fibre at least.

You are talking rubbish - only half of the UK resident population voted in the referendum. How many of those people googled, "what is the EU?" the following day?

dannyufcfan · 19/01/2026 22:21

They could be a little less a lot of things.

I don't know what the answer is to this countries problems are but I can guarantee it's not them.

It would be a devastating blow to the country if they ever got into power.

I do despair at the state of this country for them to be leading the polls. How have we produced people so stupid that they can't see the most obvious con of all time. I mean, did brexit not teach them anything?

The only good side to it is, they would be so inept that they would last one term and implode. Never to be seen again.

Dunno, how many did google that?

Oh, you don’t know either lol.

Pretty clear that the whole thing was spun on lies though. Tell me about those trade deals and decrease in immigration please that leave promised, I’m all ears.

How much did it cost? A fuckload.

What did we achieve? Naff all.

slow handclap

You obviously did - that's at least one.
