Has lack of Premier Inn breakfast ruined the weekend?

I mean, it hasn't, not for me, but DH seems to feel otherwise and I don't know if I've been UR. We (us and two dc) were in London overnight to see a show. We would normally maximise our time in the city and leave maybe this sort of time on Sunday, but we've all been ill and still feel a bit tired and rundown and so agreed we'd leave after breakfast and maybe a walk/quick trip to a park or the river.

When I woke I realised our PI was about a 20 minute walk from Shoreditch market where I was sure there are loads of cafes and stalls. Although we normally have the PI breakfast I thought this would be a nice change and mean we would be doing what we had planned (quick trip to somewhere nice and a walk) and could then leave. Also looked up a particular cafe that looked nice. Everyone agreed - all fine.

When we arrived at the cafe there was a queue. DH immediately said in a moody way, 'That's that then,' and started huffing. I said let's walk up (we were at the end of the road) it might not be that bad, but he had walked off. We ended up wandering around the area with him getting increasingly grumpy. Sods law, we weren't really going past any suitable looking cafes, although I'm sure the area is full of them. We did see a Pret but I didn't want that.

We eventually saw a nice independent cafe where we were able to have porridge, pastries, toast and spreads, fresh juice and lovely coffee. We all ate but DH wouldn't stop going on about the bloody PI. Yes, I get that he would eat his body weight there and we ended up with a relatively small breakfast that probably cost more (though our kids are 16 and 18, so no more free PI breakfasts!) but what we had was lovely, the place was lovely, and a bit different, and, ffs, PI will still be there next time. I offered to look for another place or even a Greggs for him to 'top up,' but he went in full strop mode. DS1 loves a PI breakfast too and he didn't moan, and dd was wanting pancakes in the place with a queue but she didn't moan that she didn't end up getting them, it's just him acting like a child. He also moaned about the cost, saying PI breakfast would have done for lunch as well, but we were home in time for a late lunch and no one wanted food on the journey so it's like he's just looking for stuff to moan about.

We're home now but he has said he's sick of me making all the decisions, I'm fussy and nothing is good enough and I'm just hard work. He's gone for a run but it was an atmosphere all the way home. Did I do wrong - I get I could have looked at booking but to me it worked out fine in the end.

Do you genuinely believe that you are incapable of controlling your temper if you’re hungry? Like a toddler? Are you not in the least embarrassed by that?

Some people get irrationally angry without food. I do, it happened much more when I was thinner and younger but it is a thing which other people who don’t have struggle to comprehend.

I've heard all of that many times now and intend to fully ignore it.

My teeth are still pretty clean from a good brushing at bedtime the previous night before I have breakfast. So I have always cleaned them after breakfast but before going out anywhere and will continue to do so. They are thoroughly cleaned twice a day, occasionally more.

I always rinse out afterwards too and will continue that as well. At nearly 60 I still have all of my own teeth and no problems.

Edited

Mouths dry out overnight causing bacteria to multiply, hence morning breath. They are definitely not clean first thing in the morning.

I drink water and tea when I get up, and use antibacterial mouthwash just before heading down to breakfast. Teeth then thoroughly cleaned when I get back to the room.

Still not buying it. I'll carry on the way that has served me well for so long.

People saying traipsing around 😂 they’ve gone to London for the culture. ‘Traipsing around’ is literally soaking up the culture and the view and the architecture and it’s a damn sight healthier than getting in the lift to the breakfast room. PI breakfasts could be eaten in Solihull or Peterborough and it would be the same food and you wouldn’t have a clue where in the world you were. We do it right now because it suits our family but like fuck will I be doing it when my kids are older. I would like something a little tastier and less predictable thank you! And let’s face it we know her husband would have eaten to excess and then moaned about it all the way home. Husband can’t have been feeling that under the weather as he managed a run when he got home. Also, she’s allowed to still be pissed off! It was only yesterday that he was sulking and ignoring her. She is probably questioning her marriage and you all think she just needs to ignore that fact that her husband said nasty things about her that likely aren’t true. Maybe those of you that think she’s unreasonable can take him off her hands, he sounds delightful. You can sit and eat 2,000 calories for breakfast and listen to him farting on the train on the way home having seen none of the capital of England and she can have a lovely stroll in the fresh air and get some breakfast she can’t get just anywhere - in peace. Oh and don’t forget you’ll have to do everyone’s washing while he goes for his run.

is that a joke? I really don’t mind PI breakfast but the coffee is definitely not what I would choose if there were loads of proper coffee shops nearby… same with the pastries!

The coffee is bog standard costa coffee. Not the most amazing coffee but exacrly the same as on any high street.

Sartre · 19/01/2026 09:29

Depends how large the queue was at the first cafe and how long you’d have had to wait to be seated and then eat. Maybe a happy medium could have been letting him have the breakfast there first, then you all going on to the cafe after. At least he could have been satiated and less moody then when you were queueing at the first place.

The problem is not a new generation of women, it's your Inernalised misogyny.

Who are you or any other poster to try and control or silence women who don't agree with your Interpretation. We are not 'clueless', we don't 'have a low bar' nor are we 'men', we just understand the difference between the AIBU board and an echo chamber. Perhaps you should ask Mumsnet to set up an Echo Chamber board. Seems like that might be more your style.

Sorry, have I hit a nerve?

Listen, if you think sulking for hours and going off in a strop, ruining the atmosphere of what should’ve been a nice weekend for your DW and dc’s - all bc you had to queue and wait a bit for your breakfast - is acceptable behaviour either from yourself or your DH I feel very sorry for you. That isn’t normal behaviour from a grown up person.

The OP has explained her DH does this often.

Stop telling women in abusive relationships that they should suck it up otherwise they are the problem. It’s ironic that you are the one who can’t help showing your misogyny.

Kind of interesting that you don’t get the irony in your post?

You were the one who felt the need to directly copy and paste my quote and tell me I have “internalised misogyny” and would be better off in an “echo chamber”.

Maybe have a think on that one 🤔

dottiedodah · 19/01/2026 12:31

Im with hubby on this one .Had a great PI BF recently.DH even went back for seconds! For a tenner its great value I think .And unlimited OJ as well!

RyanFudgingMurphy · 19/01/2026 13:45

I kind of agree with the DH because IME it’s better to go somewhere local and good, but you have to be organised and get there early before the main rush comes along. The better caffs in London (especially those featured regularly on SM) get queues, nothing you can do about that.

PI breakfasts are usually underwhelming and give me the trumps.

StarlightLady · 19/01/2026 13:55

In my book missing out on a Premier Inn breakfast would enhance any weekend. 🤮

What specifically about a PI breakfast do you find vomit worthy? Have you ever actually had one?

Which bit was offensive? The coffee, tea or fruit juice? The freshly made porridge? Eggs freshly cooked to order? Mushrooms and tomatoes, baked beans? Bacon? Pretty decent quality sausages? A range of cereals and muesli? Toast (white or wholemeal) with real butter? Or Flora, if that's inexplicably your thing? Yogurts? Fresh fruit? Jams, Marmite, Golden Syrup or honey? Pancakes or croissants?

Tessasanderson · 19/01/2026 15:15

I can see it both ways here. I know some people who would crawl over broken glass to have a PI breakfast. Especially the all you can eat ones. Yes its middling food, but who is anyone here to judge. A lot of people like them, fact.

It is also pretty much a guarentee of having a solid breakfast (Whatever type you choose) before setting off for the day so its uncomplicated, especially for a family of 4 adults. You DH did end up hungry and frustrated at you passing up a certainty for the sake of something a bit different.

Finally, lets face it, it is also an opportunity for some to overeat and fill their bulging guts. Each to their own and if someone likes to do that then its not something i would judge them for.

I can see you wanted something different. Thats fine and i would have embraced the alternative. You know your DH better than anyone and maybe you missjudged. Maybe you should have discussed it with him earlier or maybe he could have had a snack earlier so he didnt get hangry.

I would just be clear with him next time.

In that location though you're tripping over independent artisan coffee roasters.

But four of you could a have a full continental breakfast with as much Costa coffee as you like for 8.99 or 10.99 for the full cooked option, and that can cost even less if you get it included in a special offer room deal. You'll probably end up paying 8 quid in most cities for a large coffee and a croissant or pastry alone these days.

If you've got a long journey or you are on a day out with a packed schedule, a big breakfast negates the need for everyone to stop and buy an expensive lunch too. An M&S sandwich will suffice for those who really need to eat three times a day. And under 16s eat free. It's a no brainer for families on a budget with teens with hollow legs.

Horses for courses then I guess. But OPs husband should have used his words about his preferences, and definitely not been a sulky arse about it all.

HeyThereDelila · 19/01/2026 16:53

Your DH sounds moody and immature. Bizarre behaviour!

BethBynnag86 · 19/01/2026 17:07

The Premier Inn I normally stay at when visiting family doesn't do breakfasts;instead you're given a voucher to go and get one at the Table Table restaurant next door (for a supplement of course).Dreadful reviews and I did it just once🤢 The Morrisons next door used to do a very good value breakfast and did a roaring trade from Premier Inn guests. It was rather sad -disastrous in fact- when they closed their cafe. Now I have coffee in my room and go a- wandering to find breakfast for myself.

To sum up. Very greasy, poor service and told although l could have fried eggs, scrambled eggs were not available because the scrambled delivery hadn’t arrived.

The scrambled eggs are usually the only ones that are put out buffet style. I think the fried and poached are always cooked to order, although that might vary from branch to branch. I mean a fried breakfast is greasy. That's sort of the point. 😆If you don't like it have something else. Plenty of other options.

But maybe you were just unlucky in the PI you were at. I've had three dreadful evening meals at different PIs where I've had decent breakfasts and I won't try it a fourth time.

ScreentimeInTheMeantime · 19/01/2026 18:04

I love a hotel breakfast so I don’t think DH is being unreasonable in regretting not having it, or even getting a bit hangry when you were searching for somewhere to eat.

BUT he is being unreasonable for going on about it: it often happens on trips that something doesn’t quite pan out the way you want it to, but best to just get on with the day and don’t let it infect others’ enjoyment!

And the sausages :( sad little homogenous tubey things. And the hash browns that have either gone soft or are hard all the way through.

The bacon and the mushrooms usually survive ok though. (I like my bacon crunchy)

I’m on team DH here - you turned down an all you can eat and drink PI breakfast for an independent cafe. I’d be more than sulking so would DC, the breakfast is the best part of the stay. He’s well within his rights to be sulking.

You'd seriously sulk (are you an adult?) about breakfast?

caringcarer · 19/01/2026 18:17

I love a PI breakfast. If you ask for scrambled eggs they cook it to order. Plus I'm allergic to mushrooms so they plate up my breakfast in the kitchen. This is necessary because idiots use to GS for mushroom then put the same to GS back on bacon.
