My doctor was late to my appointment because he had been at the local country hotel full of asylum seekers...

When was the last time you had a home visit? Is this a way of managing the " problem" by them taking clinics there? Is it a way of hiding this issue? I understood they did not have access to the NHS yet I see massive bags of medicine labelled for this hotel too at the dispensary. We wait about 6-7 weeks for a routine appointment.

You can all come on with your personal attacks and insinuating you are a bigger person but there needs to be a longer term plan than this. What would you all suggest happens to these men in the long term ?

Well what is your solution ? You’re the one who has raised an apparent objection to a GP visiting a hotel which houses asylum seekers.

So what would you suggest they do instead?

And surely you know the backlog on processing asylum seeker application mostly happened under the 14 years of the conservative. Not Labour who simply inherited this state of affairs.

The question is why is an NHS doctor out doing home visits at this place when NHS funds are not supposed to be used?

It will be a locally negotiated service. The practice will be paid by some other government body to do it (aka the tax payer but not NHS funds ....well it will be extra funding given to the NHS....) . We had this for the Syrian refugees, we were paid extra so we could do more checks on them.

@WhyIsThereSoMuchWashingAllTheTime

an attack on the country is already happening by Russia.

You might want to look up some information on the real attack on the country by the Russians. Goes by the Name of Nigel Farage...

Dollymylove · 17/01/2026 13:30

I was under the impression that the government had contracted a private health company to service the medical needs of illegal immigrants. They go to the hotels to give them treatment. This clears the NHS doctors to still not give sick people appointments 😉

@doodiethewonderdog The hotel that the doctor attended houses a lot of doctors and engineers.

They need to be kept healthy so they can continue to work and make the wealthy people in Britain even more wealthy.

Patch them up and we've solved the problem of military recruitment. They've come here because they live our country so much. The world is now entitled to the resources of the UK. So we have unlimited fighters.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 17/01/2026 13:31

This is not new. It is easier and most cost effective to travel to accommodation with many people who may need an appointment. I’m sure if you gathered the sick patients from your area in your home the doctor would visit there too.

It's sad that this cannot be discussed. It's not goady. It's a matter of fact for some people. What is Labour's solution? To build new homes for these men. How do people on council waiting lists feel about this. We ARE allowed to raise these issues.

There's no need for any discussion. You want to be goady, that's the only reason you are calling for 'discussion'.

You keep saying that you want people to give suggestions to deal with the issue but I’m not clear what the issue you have is? That asylum seekers are entitled to healthcare? Or that you have to wait 6-8 weeks for an appointment? If it’s the first, then I don’t see this as an issue. Everyone should har basic healthcare regardless of their immigration status. I care for children with a chronic condition, several of who are asylum seekers, and they would all die within a few weeks without healthcare. I would question anyone’s morals that could argue they should not be entitled to care. If your issue is with the wait for GP appointments then you need to look closer to home at what our governments have done to destroy the NHS not at asylum seekers.

This is basically it.

Not saying you are wrong. But why would this be done when all immigrants, regardless of status, are entitled to primary care including registration with a GP?

Perhaps there is a political calculation in the mix…..

AnimalPrints · 17/01/2026 13:33

Asylum seekers attract additional extra funding for GP's.
Many GP's are self employed business owners who run their own surgeries as independent contractors to the NHS. They cover their own expenses such as staff costs and buildings.
All business owners seek to maximise profit - that's the very nature of business.

Crocodocodile · 17/01/2026 13:34

Be careful hun, your racism is showing. Wouldn't want any crazy "lefties" piling in on you for your totally, un-inflamatory, un-prejudiced, perfectly non goady thread would we?

"Doctor provides healthcare for human beings in need of healthcare" shocker! 🤣

JHound · 17/01/2026 13:35

I don’t see the issue.

Dr late to appointment because he had a prior appointment that ran over.

So?

Right.

MissMoneyFairy · 17/01/2026 13:36

How do you know why the doctor was late, where have you seen the bags of medication, if you work in the pharmacy or health care you have overstepped the professional code. If the doctor has been indiscreet and shared private information they need reporting to the practice manager and senior partners.

Mooselooseinmyhoose · 17/01/2026 13:37

I work in a role which examines GP services. All areas have provision for home visits where they are needed. It is not a benefit conferred on a group of people or otherwise it's based on need.

Would you care if the doctor was late because they'd been on a home visit to little old Mildred?

I've heard they're also pissing in a reservoirs and mooning in restaurant windows whilst people are having their bottomless brunches.

I got that from a fairly serious, well informed journalist

what a bizarre thing to write over such a serious matter.

So you don't think the Russians are attacking the country by undermining/sabotaging. We imagined ships in our water that the navy chased off. We imagined our cables had been tampered with. We imagined the cyber attack on our manufacturing industries recently. What about the use of poison in Salisbury.

Glad you spent alot of time thinking/reading about it before posting your views.

Course if you are working on behalf of Putin then good job but you need to improve on your gaslighting skills.

without reading about it I couldn't comment. However do I believe some of our politicians will be in cahoots with Putin. Yes almost certaintly.
Thanks for bringing it up. I had forgot to mention that in my post.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 17/01/2026 13:41

You've given the precise area, which makes the GP surgery, the GP identifiable - and you identifiable to the practice.

Pretty sure that they could fire you as a patient for that demonstrable irretrievable breakdown of trust.

saraclara · 17/01/2026 13:42

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but that hotel is for asylum seeking families, and most occupants are women and children.

It's also semi rural so it's unlikely that residents can easily get to the surgery. If there are any buses, they probably can't afford to get one as they only get £9 a week to spend.

So yes, it's likely that a doctor will visit occasionally. And given that this is Mumsnet, I'm sure we all agree that children who need medical care should get it, wherever they come from.

BillieWiper · 17/01/2026 13:43

I think it is useful to firstly acknowledge that the situation was largely caused by the previous administration. Labour, thus far, have increased staffing levels to process irregular migrants and asylum seekers at a faster rate. They have diverted funds to the NHS with millions of additional appointments available since they came to power, and additionally, net migration has dropped by nearly 70%.

I am not a fan of this government especially, but one must recognise the things they have done.

Also, nobody is building housing for asylum seekers. They don't get to stay here permanently. Their asylum status is reviewed every five years to decide whether the circumstances under which they were granted asylum are still relevant.

As someone up thread stated, we should be grateful we are not in the position of needing asylum in the first place.

Oh, and don't forget, the previous administration also changed the rules regarding applying for asylum, so a seeker must get to UK soil before they are able to make a claim. That didn't help anything.
