Traitors is a negative influence on society

The TV show Traitors is an example of society breaking down not just a bit of fun entertainment. It glorifies and rewards deceitful behaviour. I can’t actually believe so many people watch it and encourage their kids to watch it as if it is a good thing.

I also like that I can watch this with my dd.

I enjoy it (although sometimes find the missions dull) and love Claudia and her wardrobe.

I think the most harmful thing about it is the bias (unconscious or not) in voting out people of colour and older people. I wonder if the traitors weren't white whether they'd last as long. And if Harriet and Amanda were young whether they'd still be in. (Then again I think Harriet and Amanda went a bit rogue and didn't help themselves).

I'm not sure it was all unconscious bias as much as herd behaviour and some unusual game play.

BUT if the show does illustrate
unconscious bias or is perceived to and brings that to the attention of the public isn't that actually a good thing?

Bloozie · 17/01/2026 08:54

You know what? I agree with you and thought I was the only person in the UK that feels like this. I have friends with extremely strident views about the behaviour shown on traitors in any other context that think I’m mad.

I can’t stand watching it. Why would I want to watch people deliberately being awful? My husband however wants to apply to go on it. He loves it. He watches and I put my headphones on and watch something else on my laptop, or read a book. The missions are boring and the backstabbing makes me angry.

We are definitely the minority though. Everyone loves Traitors.

Bikergran · 17/01/2026 08:54

There's an awful lot of us who don't watch it and can't give a shit about it, so I'd relax if I were you.

But they aren't "being awful", they are playing a game!

It's not real and I don't believe anyone in there believes it's real. Yes, they get caught up in it because it must be a very intense experience but every player who is interviewed afterwards always talks about how much they enjoyed it.

YellowFluffyBunny · 17/01/2026 09:01

It was fine first time I watched it, now it feels like a copy of Big Brother. I find it repetitive and boring but don't care about it really. It shows how easily people can be influenced by others, and distracted by irrelevant stuff.

I think everything but the celebrity version where they play for charity is utterly vile as a premise and definitely symbolic of stuff going wrong in society. I read up the rules before the first one and have never watched any.

You may as well take lessons in becoming a psychopath .

Of course it's real.

The sheer scale of the prize money makes it real.

I know! Look at all the people that have seen The Mousetrap on stage over the last 60 years and have gone on to be serial killers. People just can't tell the difference between pretending to kill someone and actually doing it!

I watched the first series and enjoyed it but couldn't be bothered to watch any more.

Sorry didn't mean to quote you.

They're not. Try the Aussie S2. I had to stop watching. Terrible ending too, predictable, pointless and unpleasant to watch. No wonder it got canned over there.

Aussie T3 has been announced.

The game play isn't real. People don't really want to murder each other or dislike each other, that bit is a game.

Small price to pay to see Claudia’s outfits.

But I've been disappointed with her outfits this series. It's like she used up all her good stuff in the celeb series....

DarkForces · 17/01/2026 09:08

I think the traitors is actually pretty gentle. The traitors struggle murdering the longer it goes on. The faithfuls at the round table are far more brutal and personal. It's like they forget that as fast as they find traitors new ones will emerge as without them there's no game!

TalkToTheHand123 · 17/01/2026 09:10

I just can't watch it for more than 2 secs. It just seems so boring.

Happyholidays78 · 17/01/2026 09:10

I really like it & I hate lying & deception, I watch it willing the faithful on as I like to see honesty win overall.

UniquePinkSwan · 17/01/2026 09:10

I really believe it, posting because I. Know it isn’t an acceptable view to most people and many will think I’m ridiculous but I honestly think it is a really negative influence.

Think for a moment- as a nation - this is one of the most popular family focused cultural happenings - people choose to watch and glorify a bunch of half famous random people be duplicitous to each other as if they are killing each other. This is what we choose to spend time doing and endorsing. Weird.

I'm glad you started this thread. I know a few people who feel the same way about it but as the poll shows, we're really in a minority.

What i don't understand is why so many people can't see how vile it is to gain a huge monetary rewards for lying skillfully.

At the very least the winner will be a sociopath hiding in plain sight, by definition as only those people will have the skills to win.

Don't people realise it requires the same traits to win this game as to scam people out of their savings, tell old people they need a new roof when they don't, and catfish women?

It’s because you are a much better than those that watch it.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 17/01/2026 09:12

There's also a TV show called Gladiators, but it's not actually fights to the death. It's about physical strength and tactics. The Traitors is about human psychology and tactics.

Tooobvious · 17/01/2026 09:15

Listenup99 · 17/01/2026 00:49

I think it is wholesome with good values so all good with that!

What? You approve of actual physical violence?

Oh stop it! This is so over the top and ridiculous!
Do you really believe this?

Do you think thrillers & murder mystery shows teach people how to be criminals?

Line of Duty taught me a lot about the criminal underworld, do you think it made some people think they could set up an organized crime group?

Skybunnee · 17/01/2026 09:15

ICE, Gaza, Syria - I think you are tuning to the wrong progs if you worry about Traitors OP

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 17/01/2026 09:16

I love it when people criticise things they’ve absolutely no idea about. It makes for very entertaining reading.

@Listenup99it’s a game. And if you watch it and then watch Traitors Uncloaked you would understand that.
They don’t hate each other, they don’t really want to murder each other. They’re playing a game and they all understand that.
I watch it with my 11 year old gets it!

Imdunfer · 17/01/2026 09:16

cloudtreecarpet · 17/01/2026 09:05

You're missing the point. The point of the game is to win. A very large amount of money. To lie and cheat in order to win.

Out in the real world using those skills and getting caught gives you a prison sentence.

Radiatorvalves · 17/01/2026 09:18

DarkForces · 17/01/2026 00:47

It all started to go wrong with murder in the dark 😭

My kids loved that. Still do at 21&19. I don’t think they’re turning into psychopaths.

Except unlike the examples you give, the people being deceived know they are being tricked by someone, have volunteered for it in the knowledge that they might be chosen to deceive others, and have no personal losses…
