To wonder if anyone has or is considering moving to a country that's less likely to be involved if Putin attacks a NATO country. (title edited by MNHQ at request of OP)

I hope that if WW3 happened, I'd be brave enough to stay and fight. I love Britain & I'd hate to leave it or see it invaded by Putin.

However, at the same time I'm wondering about the recent rush of articles suggesting conflict with Russia is inevitable by around 2030 and that civilians need to prepare to be conscripted to fight if NATO is attacked. I'd always thought Britain being land-invaded was fairly unlikely, but being called up to fight in a NATO war widens the options of what might happen.

Countries that are less likely to be involved include Austria, Switzerland, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland. I don't particularly want to move to any of these. If call-ups are likely to be imminent in about 4 years, I don't know..

The country I've always thought I'd move to if I did move is Poland (where I have family ties)- but of course that's far more likely to be involved in a potential war!

Ireland, Switzerland & Austria have all fairly long traditions of neutrality.

Moreover, Switzrlerland is not a NATO member, nor is Austria or Ireland.

Ireland is beginning to take defence seriously, as it could come under threat due to its strategic importance in transatlantic communications.

Sweden and Finland were neutral until the invasion of Ukraine.

Switzerland and Austria relied on their geography to protect them -Austria was regarded as too difficult to maintain by Russia after WWII. Modern warfare might change things.

New Zealand and Australia could be threatened by China if there's a global conflict.

Greenland was always regarded as one of the safest refugees in the world. Look at it now...

DH is English, long-term Royal Navy. Very interested in politics and military matters. We moved back to NZ, my homeland, a few years ago, on retirement, and not a day goes by, when he has read and digested the news, that he doesn't say "Thank God we're here and not there. At least in NZ, we can feed ourselves and are self-sufficient in energy." Yes, boringly repetitious, but heartfelt. The predictions for NATO and Europe in general are terrifying.

Unless of course the fat orange barrage balloon wants our beneficent land...there are loads of very rich foreigners hunkering down in the peaceful remote beaches and mountains. Sometimes it's good to be boring and remote.

OP, what skills would you bring to the country that you choose to move to?

Interesting.

On NZ, my concern re that is that it's sinking. How serious is this threat though?

Sinking? Where? The subduction zone? Not in my lifetime. The loonies running the world are far more dangerous than a bit of tectonic plate action.

Putting knows that our nuclear bombs are well past their sell by date and unlikely to work, hes the sort of psychopath who would happily allow large swathes of his country and population to be obliterated so long as he can be king of the smoking rubble.
Defending our country involves fighting overseas aswell as on home territory and as a citizen i would do so if necessary.
The question remains are YOU a coward or a citizen?

Me? I’m a fucking massive coward, and absolutely fine with that, thanks.

😎

Shove a stick in the ground where we are, and you'll get a tree. It's that fertile.

Stupid though I know I sound, you make me want to drag out and re-read Kingsley Amis's "Russian Hide and Seek".

IridiumSky · 17/01/2026 03:55

Would I or anybody in my family consider running away? No.

Disgusting.

NATO nuclear weapons are not past their "sell by date" or unlikely to work. Nuclear weapons are very well understood, as is their maintenance. They're not just sitting there decaying.

Yes we actually have. I work for a large company, in a global role. If WW3 kicked off i would hopefully be able to move my household family to India, USA or even China. Given the choice probably India, as i think application process would be easier and out of the 3 they are less likely to be involved.

MangaKanga · 17/01/2026 04:42

Carla786 · 17/01/2026 01:41

You're missing the point. If Putin attacks a NATO member like Poland or Lithuania, the British Army might well conscript civilians here to fight.

That is far more likely than attacking Britain via land invasion as the main focus.

The way the rest of NATO came to help out England during the Falklands War?

Lmao, how old are you?

India supplied the biggest volunteer army in WWII. They will be involved. But unlike WWII, we won't have Russia, China or India on our side this time.

That's the problem here.

Just to add... we wouldn't move just incase. It would be to avoid an actual war happening on our home front or conscription dragging away DH. The choice of India, USA or China is because this is where my companies other large subsidiaries are based- so i could work here and do the same job, for same pay (which would be extremely high vs cost of living in India) etc... it would be moving country semi-temporarily but not starting again from scratch. Could probably apply for a temporary work visa - that kind of thing.

But no
...

Not thought about it too much 😂

Yes but India would surely not be involved enough to actually fight on their home front or be invaded?

May I ask what food you are using? I am not sure I am offering best selection at the moment.

Also some squirrels live in trees at the back - so I might need to check the feeders!

I know you didn't ask me but Flutter Butter is good. We're overrun with them. We'll be in debtors prison soon as we have to buy so much.

Currently planning my move to the island of Tristan da Cunha.

BusyPeachEagle · 17/01/2026 06:30

Not sure why you would consider NZ but not Australia. If Australia goes to war, I would expect NZ will be right with them.

babyproblems · 17/01/2026 06:41

Always makes me giggle that people often think they could just up and move to another country as if they were moving round the corner. You’d literally have to qualify for a visa, prove employment, financial stability etc. I can’t help but think there is a link between the ‘just up and move / we’re entitled to live wherever of course’ and the threat of Russian war..

Austria was neutral in WW11 & WW1 was it? Aye right pal.

I'm still sceptical of Trump invading.

Who knows, though?

I think you need to be more worried about Trump invading Greenland! That would be the end of NATO, but I think the US would suffer more than Europe! If that was to happen I suspect a more likely scenario would be Putin would make a grab to reclaim Alaska as its mineral rich, which is the main reason Trump wants Greenland! I think you’ll find Trump is far more dangerous than Putin!

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/01/2026 07:15

Calm your heels. You didn't live through the cold war and it shows!

That bird feeder is something else!!! Getting that.
