I have recently had a huge life changing bereavement (loss of my daughter - I have posted about this on other threads).

The point of this thread is something quite superficial. I have barely eaten for 3 months and have lost lots of weight.

I never had much of a sweet tooth, but think I might fancy some really delicious chocolates and my wonderful friend has offered to buy me some and, on this occasion, cost is not really material.

I like milk and dark chocolate (not white), cream and truffle and ganache. I quite like a crispy coating. And fruit flavours. Do not want alcohol in them. So no champagne truffles. I like peppermint. And marzipan. And coconut. I like nuts ordinarily, but am struggling to swallow food (only eating soup) so probably best to avoid nuts at the moment.

I once had some Leonidas chocolates that I liked. My friend suggested Godiva or Audreys. Neither of us have ever had those.

Can anyone help me please with a suggestion for some really lovely chocolates that are readily available for the UK and that might restore a bit of my appetite.

Thank you in advance.

Kennedys in Penrith have amazing chocs! but also 1683 chocolate place in Knowle, West Midlands are amazing.

MammaBear1 · 16/01/2026 21:46

I’m so sorry for your loss.

My favourite chocolates are Monty Bojangles or any of the Tonys Chocolonley bars.

Shufflebumnessie · 16/01/2026 21:49

I am so sorry to read about the heartbreaking loss of your daughter. I'm not surprised you've been struggling to eat and I hope you find something to tempt you soon.
My suggestion would be Whitakers. They are a family run UK company. I absolutely adore their coffee chocolates but they also do a dark chocolate mint version too. Put them in the fridge to give the chocolate a little extra snap.

Theses M&S dark chocolate marzipan are delicious too

I'd forgotten Whitakers, we used to go into their shop in Skipton, it's no longer there sadly, and buy bags of 'seconds', especially the coffee creams! They produce those little pillow squares for companies, hotels etc., we once bought a bag of those and a lot of them were from the Royal Yacht, obviously a long time ago.

RottenBanana · 16/01/2026 22:02

I am so sorry.
All I can say is Läderach.
x

Comefromaway · 16/01/2026 22:11

Are Whitaker’s meant to be luxury? I’d consider them to be along the same line as After Eights. Nice enough, but nothing special.

WolfinSheepsDress · 16/01/2026 22:21

Op.sympathies.

You want handmade chocolates. I very much enjoyed a box of self selected Kenney's chocs Orton ...about 30 for 30.

No...bloody palm oil !!

Make sure you get the correct one there are two kenndys .

WolfinSheepsDress · 16/01/2026 22:23
  • my kenndys is the same as the Penrith one above actually. Kenndys fine chocolates.

I love you can choose your own.

Caerulea · 16/01/2026 22:29

Lots of big brands out there but for something really unique & artisan I wholly recommend Dark Sugars, run by an African woman in London. Everything about them is very special indeed.

I’m very sorry for your loss x
You mentioned you are in the South West.
Theres Chococo, all of them are lovely.
Also in Bristol, Zara’s Chocolates.
Also find M&S great across the board, their Xmas Chocolate box was delicious and they do small boxes of artisan chocolates, they are £4 for 3.

If you want the absolute best you want the award winners like the Highland Chocolatier or Adam Handling.

I had Adam Handling chocs for Christmas, unbelievably good 😊

good luck with your recovery

I'll second the Highland Chocolatier - he lead an online tasting for my work do, and the chocolate was sensational

WolfinSheepsDress · 16/01/2026 22:58

@LadyMacbethWasFierce yes had Audrey I did enjoy them however they changed their selection policy to 3 of each and I didn't like the way they responded to my complaint.

So this year I went to Kennedy I could select one or two chocka

Ifyounevergiveup · 16/01/2026 23:13

Seems there may be two elements to your question. There are many suggestions here for lovely and indulgent chocolates (my vote would be Fortnum & Mason or Leonidas). But I also pick up an issue of tempting some appetite. If that’s the case then go for something which might not be expensive but gives you the unholy blend of salt within the sugar and fat. Since nuts are on your list, I’d recommend Ritter Sport pistachio bar. It may be cheap compared to many but trust me, you’ll finish it.

I think you’ve been very brave to come on and ask for what you need at just this point in a blindingly difficult process ❤️

CheeseWisely · 16/01/2026 23:18

I’m so sorry for your loss OP.

Leonidas are the best I’ve found. I had some veeeery expensive Charbonnel chocs at Christmas and they were nowhere near as good. Stick with something you already know you like x

lanadelgrey · 16/01/2026 23:18

LadyMacbethWasFierce · 16/01/2026 16:14

Oh, just going off to google some of the suggestions. Thank you all so much and for your good wishes.

Anyone had Audreys?

Audrey’s are wonderful. The chocolate isn’t overly sugary but really good quality and a good selection of all sorts of flavours. A special treat that I have every year

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 16/01/2026 23:20

I’m very sorry for your loss. Not read the whole thread, but these are delicious. You don’t get many but are definitely worth it.

Hill Street. I love chocolate and have had a lot of fancy brands. It’s hands down the best I’ve tasted.

We've recently been on holiday to Switzerland and tried lots of chocolate. Our favourite was definitely Laderach - It's really smooth and creamy but it is expensive.

I had some Tony's chocolonely in various flavours, they were all really nice and chunky, available on Amazon

Stopbringingmicehome · 16/01/2026 23:37

I've this evening discovered chococo it's amazing.

LadyMacbethWasFierce · 17/01/2026 09:01

Well good morning. DD2 and I spent a nice half hour choosing 20 chocolates from Kennedys. The fact that we could choose our own, individually, and have just one of each made it an attractive option.

i enjoyed this thread and reading the recommendations. I shall likely try some of the other ones once these are gone!

Thanks to all.

Deepest sympathy to you @LadyMacbethWasFiercefor your unimaginable loss.

I too love Leonidas.
But unlike you I don’t like marzipan or praline or dark chocolate.
I love Manon, Lingot and the Dressè Noisette.
Lindt do a mixed box of Lindor - though I would be happy with just the Red milk chocolate ones and the Salted caramel blue ones.

Try Kennedy’s Fine Chocolate shop, near Penrith but they do mail order, lots to choose from and you can pick and mix as much as you like!

Great recommendation!
