I have recently had a huge life changing bereavement (loss of my daughter - I have posted about this on other threads).

The point of this thread is something quite superficial. I have barely eaten for 3 months and have lost lots of weight.

I never had much of a sweet tooth, but think I might fancy some really delicious chocolates and my wonderful friend has offered to buy me some and, on this occasion, cost is not really material.

I like milk and dark chocolate (not white), cream and truffle and ganache. I quite like a crispy coating. And fruit flavours. Do not want alcohol in them. So no champagne truffles. I like peppermint. And marzipan. And coconut. I like nuts ordinarily, but am struggling to swallow food (only eating soup) so probably best to avoid nuts at the moment.

I once had some Leonidas chocolates that I liked. My friend suggested Godiva or Audreys. Neither of us have ever had those.

Can anyone help me please with a suggestion for some really lovely chocolates that are readily available for the UK and that might restore a bit of my appetite.

Thank you in advance.

I love Lindt. The original red box. Super creamy truffles, and they come in a range of different flavours too. Recently tried the pistachio ones. So moreish!
I like the more comforting, less fancy chocolate though as opposed to super posh / interestingly flavoured ones.

Sorry for your loss. I hope the chocolate helps a bit x

I am so sorry about the loss of your daughter.

Audreys supply Fortnums and have recently changed chocolate suppliers to Valrhona. They have beautiful retro heart boxes etc as well which could be a keepsake x

I’m so sorry for your loss OP.

Charbonnel et Walker truffles are delicious. Also love M&S.

Sticklebricks · 16/01/2026 18:29

Time to go for the good stuff, don’t bother with M&S or Hotel Chocolate. Try Rococo, Prestat, Artisan du Chocolat or Fortnums

I enjoyed Beech’s, but they have stopped trading.

@Buscobel Beech’s have a new owner and have started trading again. Not yet the full range but allegedly they plan to restore the entire range as well as introduce new products.

I am addicted to Beech’s coconut macaroons and was heartbroken when I saw production had stopped. Hopefully they will be back.

So sorry @LadyMacbethWasFierce, sending love from one bereaved Mum to another.

Off topic slightly, but can I also suggest (if that’s something you like, a really good fruit cake. Or maybe some Betty’s fat rascals. You can help yourself to a slice or load a rascal with butter and it feels like it’s doing some good (fruit innit)

Obviously not as a replacement for the chocolate, but an add on 🥰

I walk past this when I’m at work….. but have never paid the high prices!

So sorry for your loss OP.

Another vote for Prestat.

My deepest condolences to you and your family.

x

Oh so sorry for your loss.

I;d say Leonidas are by far the best mass-produced chocolates. There may be small "artisan" suppliers, but Leonidas do really gorgeous ganache creamy chocolates.

GingerKombucha · 16/01/2026 18:45

Pierre Marcolini are beautiful, dainty and delicious. You can buy them online though the little shop on Marylebone High St was where I bought treats to comfort myself after some fairly bad appointments on Harley St. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I have two girls, I am so sorry for your loss, not enough words really. My eldest lives in Brighton and got me some Audreys, they seem to be exactly what you are describing so definitely order some now.

bettyboo9 · 16/01/2026 19:10

Audrey’s are fantastic and if your friend treats you to one of the old fashioned, decorative boxes with a ribbon, even better. You could use the box as a special item to store small mementos of your daughter, once the chocolate has been eaten. A small step to finding some healing in a cruel world. Sending you love and strength

There's a wonderful chocolate shop called hill street their chocolate almonds are amazing!!!!

happysunr1se · 16/01/2026 19:26

If you like mint, Brecon chocolates do the most amazing garden mint truffles that taste like actual freshly crushed mint leaves.
I have never tasted a mint chocolate like it before! The chocolate is very thin with a pleasing crunch when you bite into it.

Also recommend their lemon curd truffle.

I came across Hobbs randomly in a local market one Christmas. Brought a few for people and they were massive hits. Taste great and look just as good.

Unfortunately I haven't been back that way at Christmas since so haven't had any for years :(

PeonyPatch · 16/01/2026 19:40

These are the absolute best! We discovered it in Belgium but you can buy over here in the UK. DH treats me every Christmas.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/01/2026 19:44

Friars of Keswick make gorgeous chocolates. We’ve often given them as presents - they have a great selection online. Not cheap though….

Doubletroubledoubled · 16/01/2026 19:53

So sorry for your loss OP. Have a look at Sam Joseph’s website and see if there is anything you fancy there.
He has stalls in Chester and Altrincham markets but also does mail order. I can vouch for the fact that his chocolates are delicious!

IsawwhatIsaw · 16/01/2026 19:56

Sorry for your loss.
Bendicks bittermints are very good

LadyMacbethWasFierce · 16/01/2026 16:08

Thank you. The flaked Belgian chocolates look lovely, but I think I fancy a box of mixed chocolates really. Just a dozen really, but hopefully all different.

I live in the South West. But I am not going out at all at the moment so anything I buy needs to be on line.

Thank you.

You can order “Hotel Chocolate “ on line I believe. I’ve had their chocolates and they do the assortments that you want.
So sorry for the loss of your daughter.
