To be annoyed at my seat in restaurant?

inkyspells · 15/01/2026 08:21

So last night me and partner went for a Indian meal for a belated birthday celebration.
Heard lots of good reviews but because there was just the two of us they put us on the two table (which was bang in the middle and people either side,no room to move etc )
I felt so uncomfortable the whole meal.
Felt like the other people watching us eating, couldn’t talk etc
I asked to move but they said “2 people is these tables “
Anyway il add a photo with arrow showing our table
abiu ? Or are these tables ridiculous
Bear in mind we have 2 curry’s ,2 cocktails ,2 rice ,a nan all on there and literally couldn’t move.

I’d have left and gone somewhere else.

Me too.
And I have. If i ask to be moved and you refuse, I'll leave and eat somewhere more comfortable

Maddy70 · 15/01/2026 13:56

You can't get out for a wee. I wouldn't have stayed I would have left

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/01/2026 13:58

inkyspells · 15/01/2026 13:16

We only stayed because we had to leave our bank details on booking ..so if we had of left we would of been charged £20 as a no show fee
I did ask for another table but they said no
My partner was looking at me thinking I was going to cause a scene so I just sat down

I just hope your people pleasing partner took that inside seat!

ilovepixie · 15/01/2026 14:04

I’ve been in a couple of restaurants like that. It’s not great having someone’s arse in your dinner when they are trying to get out.

MasterBeth · 15/01/2026 14:05

Swiftie1878 · 15/01/2026 08:24

Same. They didn’t want your custom. That arrangement is ridiculous.

What a stupid thing to say

They did want her custom

That's why they took her in, sat her down and served her food

Seagullstopitnow · 15/01/2026 14:07

I'm done with being treated like crap by an industry that is apparently "on it's knees"
Value my custom or I'll not be back. Treat me like shit and I'll leave reviews.

Treat me well and I'll recommend and come back!

HoppityBun · 15/01/2026 14:09

I can’t eat at tables like that. Might as well be an animal in a zoo.

mbonfield · 15/01/2026 14:16

We have has this is the past and politely but firmly stated we are not sitting there until another table is found, pure and simple. Or walk!

BunnyLake · 15/01/2026 14:34

I’d have hated that too and have been seated in a similar manner. As someone else booked I had to put up with it otherwise I’d have left. If I want to eat so close to strangers I’d go to Wagamama’s!

You're sitting in the middle table, against the back rest and need to go to the loo, theres a big behemoth of a person sat on the chair of the next table.

Do you incredibles stretch your torso and shrink your femurs to whoosh through the gaps of the table ir choose to levitate to the toilet?

more likely everyone around you has to stand up, and big behemoth person has to stand up, move back, move their chair and scoot the table out a bit to let you out?

Thats why...

I'd not have sat down, its ok, we will go somewhere else; thanks though.

Well exactly. That’s why I didn’t understand why anyone thought the OP was unreasonable.

Yes 100%!

DogMa73 · 15/01/2026 14:37

You’d have to be 5 inches wide to access the benched side lol.
Nothing worse than being seated too close to strangers - you can’t talk about anything let alone private stuff as the people on the next table (who are also too scared to speak) are bound to hear every word. It’s embarrassing, and nobody wants to sit mute all evening !
I do understand that hospitality businesses are struggling and need to maximize floor space but that’s just ridiculous.

FunnyOrca · 15/01/2026 14:37

I once went to a pho restaurant like this with a friend. The couple next to us were on a first date and so poorly matched! We had a great evening listening in and the debriefing once they left !

MooMoo74 · 15/01/2026 14:40

Yeah i wouldn’t have stayed. We don’t like being sat close like that with other people. From the pic it doesn’t even look like you have elbow space!

Is this the first time you have been to a cramped restaurant?! It’s not ideal, but often the case for small cheap places, and I can’t imagine starting a thread on this. How was the food?

I think it’s a suitable topic of conversation to start a thread about. Restaurants who don’t care about your comfort but make it difficult for you to just up and leave because they have your card details, so either way they win, is worth talking about and £100 is not the cheap price bracket where you expect this, it isn’t McDonalds. Why do you not think it’s worth a forum discussion?

Moanyoldmoan · 15/01/2026 14:45

Imagine being sizeable and being dumped there, I’m envisaging a korma up your cardigan

diddl · 15/01/2026 15:02

Did you have to wait for others to finish before you could leave?

Or did whoever was on the banquette(?) crawl under the table?

I’ve been in some cosy restaurants but never anywhere I would have to ask several people to move if I needed to get up and go to the loo. Or equally have to regularly get up myself to let other people out. That’s not on!

FizzingAda · 15/01/2026 15:19

Gosh, you couldn't squeeze a poppadum between those tables. Anyone trying to g to squeeze though could easily brush something on to the floor, or get their clothes stained. Talk about cramming them in.

SpidersAreShitheads · 15/01/2026 15:27

I often find tables for two are ridiculously cramped.

What I usually do now is book a table for three but unfortunately one person is a no-show on the night.

You shouldn’t have to do that but if restaurants insist on squeezing people into spaces like this, it’s the only way to get a reasonable amount of space.

I physically couldn’t have eaten cramped up like this. I wouldn’t have been able to relax.

As an aside, I’ve seen places like Wagamama have long benches where you all sit together. I don’t want to eat while sat close to a stranger so I always avoid anywhere with that type of seating!

What makes you think it was cheap? If you can’t imagine starting a thread on something then it’s probably better not to post on it.

paradisecircus · 15/01/2026 15:29

I wouldn't like that either; probably wouldn't go there again

WinterTreacle · 15/01/2026 15:33

Should be 3 tables max. I, too, would have felt awkward.

BernadetteJune · 15/01/2026 15:38

cramptramp · 15/01/2026 08:23

I’d have left and gone somewhere else.

Me too! I would have felt very uncomfortable!

Grammarnut · 15/01/2026 15:46

That's a bit squished. I wouldn't mind a table for two, but they have squidged in tables to get more covers. I wouldn't go back.
