To be annoyed at my seat in restaurant?

inkyspells · 15/01/2026 08:21

So last night me and partner went for a Indian meal for a belated birthday celebration.
Heard lots of good reviews but because there was just the two of us they put us on the two table (which was bang in the middle and people either side,no room to move etc )
I felt so uncomfortable the whole meal.
Felt like the other people watching us eating, couldn’t talk etc
I asked to move but they said “2 people is these tables “
Anyway il add a photo with arrow showing our table
abiu ? Or are these tables ridiculous
Bear in mind we have 2 curry’s ,2 cocktails ,2 rice ,a nan all on there and literally couldn’t move.

To be annoyed at my seat in restaurant?

What makes you think it was cheap? If you can’t imagine starting a thread on something then it’s probably better not to post on it.

It was £100 for two people - nowadays that is fairly cheap.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/01/2026 15:52

agree with everyone else, that's too close. it's either two tables of four and a larger gap, prob still a push for someone fat like me, or three tables of two.

Washingupdone · 15/01/2026 15:54

Reminds me of a Parisian cafe for a quick lunchtime meal.

Agreed, it’s shite. I hate places that cram as many people as physically possible into a small space at the expense of comfort where you can’t even get up to use the loo without disturbing the people next to you or risking your arse ending up in their food as you squeeze through an unreasonably small gap.

I went somewhere similar a while ago with someone where the purpose was for us to discuss some relatively serious personal stuff only for us to be unable to because the couple sat next to us were so close we could hear every word of each others conversations even when talking quietly.

Same here! It was some time ago and was to celebrate finding out that I was pregnant. We were talking quietly, of course - private stuff! - but at one point the woman on the next table leaned over the six-inch gap and congratulated us, and then said that she'd smoked all the way through both her pregnancies and both her kids were fine! Okaaay!

AgentPidge · 15/01/2026 16:08

It really isn't cheap. Depends whether you have three courses, how many drinks, coffee etc.
For two courses and a drink it might be reasonable but it's not "cheap".

toomuchfaff · 15/01/2026 16:13

ThreeMenInAVan · 15/01/2026 14:34

Well exactly. That’s why I didn’t understand why anyone thought the OP was unreasonable.

OMG, I forgot to include "exactly" as the first word!

Alwayswonderedwhy · 15/01/2026 16:22

I can't see how even the thinnest of people could squeeze in-between those tables and absolutely no chance of having a conversation without the people either side overhearing. I would feel very uncomfortable too.

Bluebigclouds · 15/01/2026 16:25

I think there's not enough space to get out from those tables so is unreasonable

NewYearSameYou · 15/01/2026 16:30

cramptramp · 15/01/2026 08:23

I’d have left and gone somewhere else.

I would have as well.

And I would have told them why.

DaisyStarburst · 15/01/2026 16:35

DH and I once went to a place that had the tables that close together. Bloke at the next table proposed and she said no! Both of them carried on eating in silence, it was so awkward and we vaguely knew them too which made it worse!

Moonlightdust · 15/01/2026 16:42

You will get some people who wouldn’t mind at all however I would absolutely HATE this. I hate eating alongside strangers who can overhear my conversation at my table. It’s so uncomfortable for me - I try to request a quiet corner table if it’s a romantic meal out. I think Waiters like to group tables together as it makes it easier for serving but it really ruins the experience for me.

Cranarc · 15/01/2026 16:45

I thought you might have been being unreasonable until I saw the picture. That is ridiculously cramped. If I'd been sat there my arse would have cleared off the neighbouring table when moving past!

ThreeMenInAVan · 15/01/2026 16:47

toomuchfaff · 15/01/2026 16:13

OMG, I forgot to include "exactly" as the first word!

I can’t remember whether I misread or not, but I enjoyed the image of the stretchy superheroes dining out!

shellster80 · 15/01/2026 16:50

See I have to apologise to you here as when I first read it I’ll admit I rolled my eyes a bit….and then I saw the photo and actually completely agree with you! That’s definitely one table too many and I’d have felt really uncomfortable too

GarlicSound · 15/01/2026 16:53

They're not even dining tables! These are tables for a sandwich & a drink, or drinks with a few bowls of olives, crisps and bread. And they're too close together.

I know restaurants are having to maximise capacity due to soaring overheads, but squeezing diners in too tight to actually dine is counter-productive. Put it in your review, OP. Hope you had a good evening despite the table Tetris.

Starlightsprite · 15/01/2026 16:57

Ryce · 15/01/2026 08:24

Is this the first time you have been to a cramped restaurant?! It’s not ideal, but often the case for small cheap places, and I can’t imagine starting a thread on this. How was the food?

‘Small, cheap’ places lol. Got to love snide remarks like this. She’s only asking your opinion, not for a character, lifestyle snd finance assassination! She can start a thread about anything she wants.

Starlightsprite · 15/01/2026 16:59

I wouldn’t like it. They’re far too close together. You’re basically sat with the people on the tables next to you. I’ve seen a lot of restaurants like this and that’s why I try and check photos out on reviews before I visit. Some people are fine with it obviously or they would have had to change the configuration.

firstofallimadelight · 15/01/2026 17:07

There’s no room to leave the table without making everyone else move, that’s ridiculous and at an Indian where you order lots of dishes the table is far too small

GoodGriefCharlie · 15/01/2026 17:09

CruCru · 15/01/2026 15:48

It was £100 for two people - nowadays that is fairly cheap.

You’re right, she definitely shouldn’t have expected to be able to go to the toilet without the whole row getting out like she’s on a Ryanair flight.

Interestingly though, my reply was more in response to somebody inferring the OP was being cheap and what should she expect. I guess there’s more than one of those posters 😊

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 15/01/2026 17:09

ThreeMenInAVan · 15/01/2026 08:26

The food was probably full of bits of fluff from the clothes of people squeezing past it.

😂

PhilOPastry62 · 15/01/2026 17:09

They're way too close. What happens if you're sitting on the bench part on one of the middle tables and you need to get up to go to the loo (or for any other reason)? Does your partner have to stand up and you move the table back? Because you're not getting out through the non-existent aisle. Those should be two tables of four, with a decent space between them.

Daisywhatsyouranswer · 15/01/2026 17:11

Prob best to have looked at reviews and images of the restaurant before you booked. If you would stay whatever due to deposit.

Moonlightdust · 15/01/2026 17:12

To be honest though as a total introvert even strangers sat within 2 meters of me is enough to put me off my meal 😂

TimeForATerf · 15/01/2026 17:35

Absolutely not unreasonable. Who on earth wants to sit that close to strangers whose arse is in your plate when they leave the table. This seating arrangement is for a group of 8 friends on a single booking.

We were offered something similar at our local Italian, which had tonnes of empty tables in the room, because we were just a two. We refused to accept the table and they did move us elsewhere with a bit of a scowl.

take10yearsofmylife · 15/01/2026 17:37

It would be helpful to others who might want to book table for two if you post a google review with pictures.
