To think this is a ridiculous price?

First time getting a housesitter for my 2 dogs as a family member who used to watch them moved away. I got quoted £40 total per day by a sitter, AIBU for thinking this is ridiculous?

I'm not boarding them, the sitter would be staying in my house using my gas and electric. I have replied to them as much, but now that I am looking around at more sitters, it seems like an average price. How much does everyone else pay?

I’ve just looked at the prices my cat sitter charges for overnight dog sitting - £50 plus £10 extra per extra dog. We are a long way from London. This includes walking, but the dog must be able to be left for a few hours so she can go and walk other dogs. Your £40 is a bargain.

The sitter replied: My prices reflect the level of care 2 dogs require, I hope you’re able to find somebody who better fits your financial situation.

Is she calling me broke?

Good for her! You don't want to pay, she doesn't want to entertain you.

No she’s calling you tight and you are.

The great thing about being self employed is that you don't have to work for people who undervalue your service.

Fleurdalys · 14/01/2026 22:01

Bloody hell
You should’nt have dogs you cheapskate
Poor dogs

Ella31 · 14/01/2026 22:03

We board our two from time to time and its 45 euro for them overnight.

BillieWiper · 14/01/2026 22:04

How many hours do they need to be there for?

Surely living wage is reasonable? So that's about £12.50 ph?

Of course they'll use your utilities but only minimally. You can say don't use cooker and take away router if you are that bothered?

NotARealWookiie · 14/01/2026 22:06

Kennels would be about £30 per dog. You are getting individual care for two dogs in your home. The sitter has to travel to you and give up their time for you. £40 is a good price

£20? They are only walking the dogs for an hour, the rest of the time they're just cuddling with dogs, not much work there

What part of giving up their time do you not understand

How much would you charge to do this for a stranger- be honest at least with yourself.

£40 is cheap. ( I'm in the SE).

She's calling you a Cheeky Fucker. Justifiably.

you are paying for them to take on the responsibility as well as the walking, feeding, cleanup and so on. They can't choose what to do when as if they were in their own home.

This.

BlackCrowKing · 14/01/2026 22:09

You can’t love your dogs very much if you’re prepared to skimp on their care. Maybe reconsider pet ownership?

Indeed. And if she was on this thread she’d be calling OP a troll…..

I'm guessing you're in London? Dog walkers in my area charge between £15-£18

so pro rata you are still getting a good rate?

The price of something is what the market will take, not what you think it should be

Is she calling me broke?

Yes, or a cheapskate.

It’s a bargain price for someone to step out of their own life to care for your dogs.

No, she's calling you a tightarse. And she's right.

Eenameenadeeka · 14/01/2026 22:12

It's a similar price to what you would pay to put them both in kennels, but nicer for the dogs getting to stay home. I think it's perfect reasonable given that they have to devote all their time to your dogs.

I'd be suspicious it was too cheap. I'd rather pay double for someone who genuinely cares for my pets.

beAsensible1 · 14/01/2026 22:13

That’s pretty reasonable honestly.

they’re giving up their time to keep your animals alive daily while you are away.

its a bit unfair to say they’re not doing anything, theyre doing something otherwise you wouldn’t need them and you could use an automatic feeder for a week.

I assume you have a limit for how long you want them left alone and walks etc

She's calling you a cheapskate. You know that an hour walk costs £15 to£18 and the sitter will be responsible for your dogs all day - and all night - and is also guarding your house. They still have to pay the bills for their house while they are absent. £20 a day is derisory. £40 is cheap.

StampOnTheGround · 14/01/2026 22:15

She knows her price is completely reasonable and you’ve been ridiculous in saying it was too expensive. You’ve now found you can’t get cheaper, you are being completely unreasonable!
