to quit Facebook?

I just threw my toys out of the pram and deleted myself from Facebook. Am I crazy? I also resigned from the church council after just 2 meetings. I wonder if I am on a slippery slope to quitterdom and may next resign from life and live under a log... anyone else jumped the 'book lately?!

I think Facebook can be enjoyable as long as you:
(a) set your security settings so that people can only see your name unless you have accepted them as a friend;
(b) you are ruthless and reject all friend requests except those from people you are genuinely interested in keeping-up with.
(c) you avoid all the pointless applications and groups.

I have lived in 2 differnt continents and many different cities. I like getting back in touch with people I never really meant to lose touch with. I like laughing at witty friends' status updates. But that is about it really.

Flightybitchreturns · 15/06/2008 14:21

I just tried that link, it says 'we will contact you soon'

No, just delete my fricking account!!!!

bergentulip · 15/06/2008 14:40

I cannot be searched, I won't come up. I have one friend. The only reason I activated an account was because said friend refused to email and only ever speaks to people on Facebook.... I wanted him to see pics of my DS2 after he was born, and the stubborn sod said to put them there and he'd take a look.

Now, he sounds like a stubborn arse- he is- but he's my friend, so I obliged,.....

If you set really strong security settings, really, no one can find you. And just don't put personal information on there.

I think it's a dangerous thing, and just one more way for whatever governments and agencies to track everything we are all doing. Seriously, all it takes is one little nutjob to find one of those lost Inland Revenue disks, get your nat ins no., your bank details, then your personal details off Facebook, or MUMSNET!, or wherever, stick it all together, and then steal your life!!! (!) All very Conspiracy Theory I know, but makes you think.....

Oh, and don't get me started on Tesco Clubcards!!!! (!)

greenelizabeth · 15/06/2008 15:17

Maybe it takes a day or two to become effective?! They sent me a message saying it's been deleted, but when I search, it's still there.

I replaced my photo with a photo of a cow, and although it was saved successfully, and appeared on my profile page, when I checked it by searching for my name, it was still coming up with the photo of my face.

Bergentulip, I agree with you, a few seemingly insignificant fairly general details here and there over a long time even on mumsnet can lead to you being identified. Say something that somebody thinks MIGHT be you and then they only have to look back over your old posts to check if it is who they think it is. It happened to me.

lazarou · 15/06/2008 15:22

I quit facebook a couple of days ago

SaintGeorge · 15/06/2008 15:27

Did you delete the original picture?

I have set up a dummy facebook account with a pic. I searched for it using my regular facebook account.

Then I deleted the pic from the dummy account and searched again. It has gone, within minutes.

Not difficult to do, so I don't understand why you are having so many problems.

greenelizabeth · 16/06/2008 19:34

Saintgeorge, I don't knwo why I'm having so many problems either!!

They have e-mailed me to say it's been deleted, but it still shows up when you do a search by name. I can no longer make any changes to it though, such as deleting photo.

Does that make sense. I've e-mailed 'Emma' at privacy@facebook to ask her to try and sort it out but she hasn't replied.

SaintGeorge · 16/06/2008 19:37

Email me your fb name so I can search for you, if you want. I am wondering if it is still coming up or if it is something to do with cached pages

greenelizabeth · 16/06/2008 20:57

OK!!

SaintGeorge · 16/06/2008 22:49

Sorry for delay, have replied

Flllight · 17/06/2008 11:33

Mine says it's been deleted butI'm worried now - will go search myself

belgo · 17/06/2008 11:36

I deleted myself from face book after a strange message from an old friend.

I never really 'got' facebook anyway.

Flllight · 17/06/2008 11:42

Well neither did I tbh Belgo. It is like those lists you make when you're a teenager, 'so and so is my friend, Ooh I have got lots of friends, and so and so knows so and so' etc etc etc

Quite self indulgent and fun if you have got lots I'm sure, but if you haven't, it sure is depressing!!!

Mind you MN is pretty time wasting too...

belgo · 17/06/2008 11:46

FA- All my friends were very careful with their privacy on facebook so I found it pretty pointless, and boring. I never put anything about myself on it either.

greenelizabeth · 17/06/2008 18:13

They're looking in to it apparently.

lovechoc · 30/05/2010 16:38

it's Quit Facebook Day tomorrow so if you are fed up of it this may give you an incentive...

CheekyPinkSox · 30/05/2010 17:58

I hate facebook but im too nosey to close it down. & i have a few 'friends' on my facebook who like to start causing shit so i like to watch ti hit the fan lol

MrsC2010 · 30/05/2010 18:04

YANBU

TheLifeOfRiley · 30/05/2010 18:09

sigh. I got all excited then and thought ooh SaintGeorge is back, then realised thread is from 2008!

piprabbit · 30/05/2010 18:11

If you have friends that like causing shit, why not lose the friends instead of dumping Facebook.

Facebook is not evil - it's just a tool, use it right, behave as you would in real life and you should be fine.

diddl · 30/05/2010 18:12

How do people get into arguments though?

I´m abroad-I have about half a dozen good friends.

I use it to put photos up& "chat" to them-or send messages if they´re not on.

I don´t comment on anything that I see on my "wall"(?)

unltd · 30/05/2010 18:14

These old threads are starting to piss me right off

diddl · 30/05/2010 18:17

Bügger!
Didn´t notice the OP date before posting.

TakeLovingChances · 30/05/2010 20:31

I'm 25, no interest in FB at all.

Friends and family ask me almost weekly to join up and look at me like I'm a dinosaur if I say that actually I'm happy with my life as it is.

I have no interest in looking at pics of people I used to know - often there's a good reason why I don't keep in contact with some people.

I also don't 'get' the modern concept of having hundreds of 'friends' and how no one seems to have an internal monologue anymore.

I could rant about FB all day...

...However, I can really understand how people enjoy it to keep in contact with loved ones in different countries etc.

Each to their own, I suppose.
