If you never had period pains or pmt did you find menopause easier ?

I am hoping so, I’ve never had any period pains or symptoms or pmt and I never had any pregnancy symptoms or sickness, sore boobs or anything.
If you are not prone to hormonal side effects did you notice menopause so much?
My mum had never heard of peri and said her periods just stopped at 43 and she had no other symptoms and didn’t notice anything else, she too had no period pains or pmt.
Is it wishful thinking to think I might be lucky too then?

I had period pains about twice in my teens and never had PMT. My menopause took the form of my cycle getting longer and longer and then just stopping. I never had hot flushes, mood swings or brain fog.

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/01/2026 14:44

I had terrible gynae problems all my life - prayed for menopause, lol, how little I knew! Mine is every bit as bad just in different ways. My Gynae said to me years ago you’re more likely to have a shit menopause if you have gynae issues, so maybe the opposite is also likely? Hope so for your sake op. Doubt anyone can really say though, it seems to be very individual.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 13/01/2026 14:54

Never had period pains (partly I think because I was quite fit and sporty.) Periods stopped at 53 but , towards the end, they were quite heavy. I didn’t have any other menopausal symptoms but did put on weight.

MapleOakPine · 13/01/2026 14:56

I got mild period pains and never got PMT. I'm now 51 and heading towards menopause (I am still having periods some months but not every month). I wouldn't say I've been symptom free - I have had hot flushes and a bit of brain fog - but I've certainly suffered less than some of my friends. I am not on HRT.

mondaytosunday · 13/01/2026 14:57

I had bad period pains. Constant low level nausea throughout both pregnancies. Went through menopause in my early 50s no symptoms at all except for increasingly irregular periods. Last one at 56. My mother had a terrible time I was dreading it.

Tresd · 13/01/2026 14:58

I never suffered with periods really. Some pain on the first day of it, that was it really. Regular, no fertility issues, nothing to speak of. I was never prone to hormonal issues.

Well menopause was a bitch from hell, sorry to say. Utterly awful.

mindutopia · 13/01/2026 14:59

I’ve never really had any period symptoms except maybe in the very early years (like 10-12), when I remember having cramps every month and it being particularly unpleasant.

I’m 45, definitely peri and only get a period about 4 times a year now, so clearly in the thick of it. Never been on HRT. But I can’t say, other than the quarterly periods, that I’ve had any other symptoms. I mean, I have cancer, so I do feel like shit a lot. 😂 But fairly certain that is cancer related and nothing to do with peri. I am otherwise quite healthy though, have good mental health, don’t drink or smoke, I’m sure that helps.

SpanThatWorld · 13/01/2026 14:59

My mum once told me that she had never had menstrual issues but they menopause hit her like a train.

Sadly the same for me. Periods never an issue but the menopause was fully 8 years of hideousness. Awful time.

What's the relationship between being sport and period pains?

AreYouSureAskedNaomi · 13/01/2026 15:03

Before peri I rarely had period pains or PMT - like maybe once or twice a year, and never to the level that it would interfere wirh whatever I wanted to do.

I'm now having the perimenopause from hell and I realise how lucky I was all those years.

GreyCarpet · 13/01/2026 15:04

I had never had period pains or PMT. My periods always took me by surprise as there was no warning of their arrival (and I have never tracked them).

I had no fertility issues and terrible pregnancies. I had HG in both and lost over half a stone during my second pregnancy when I didn't really have any weight to lose.

I'm 51 so I'm assuming I'm perimenopausal. My periods are regular as clockwork but I have brain fog, period pains for the first time ever and joint pain but no mood changes or hot flushes.

DancingInTheMoonlights · 13/01/2026 15:05

No, I unfortunately for me it was the opposite - easy teens, hormones, very light periods, pregnancy was a breeze but perimenopause has hit me like a brick. It sucks.

CakeFace1234 · 13/01/2026 15:09

Easy periods, v light, no period pains. Unfortunately, menopausal periods from hell - definitely a payback for 30+ years of easy, breezy periods.

Anonymouseposter · 13/01/2026 15:10

I didn’t have much problem with period pains but I did have pmt. My periods only stopped when I had a hysterectomy at 58. I never missed one month. I didn’t have any problems with hot flushes or brain fog but my periods got very heavy and I had pmt until well in my 50s

shellyleppard · 13/01/2026 15:12

My mum went through menopause in her late 40's. We never discussed periods or anything like that. I'm post menopausal now by 5 years. Peri menopause lasted 10 years and was, at times, a living hell. I always had problems with my periods and PMT so....

Serenity45 · 13/01/2026 15:13

I'm 52 and just in menopause (last period 13 months ago). I never struggled a a teen or adult with pain / PMT etc. Peri hit me hard in some ways, I have uterine fibroids but the pain is manageable. The PMT rage is something else and pretty alien to me (and DH!) I've sworn at him so many times in my head for (in hindsight) [pretty minor things. Also hot flushes were quite bad I just didn't realise it would be a whole body thing! I didn't feel a massive difference with HRT so after a couple of adjustments to the dosage I gave it up after a year or so and feel OK as I am.

What's the relationship between being sport and period pains?

I wondered that myself. I have terrible period pain because my womb tilts the wrong way. I could have been an Olympian and it wouldn’t have made any difference. I was fit when my period pains were the worse . Less fit now at 46 but less painful (still shit) periods.

ChangeIsDue · 13/01/2026 15:30

Onset of a monthly period and a lengthy period of menopause are entirely different things.

I think about period is that you can suffer intensely for a couple of days, maybe a bit more, with headaches, bloating and period pains. It passes, and then usually rinse and repeat a month later..

With menopause, for me there was probably less intensity tha with the monthly period onset, but ongoing hot flushes and brain fog which went on probably for years. Not to mention, menopause is for many women, the onset of real ageing,

MyThreeWords · 13/01/2026 15:34

I just had mild period pains, and my menopause was straightforward, with no illness.

My periods just got very heavy for a while and then stopped dead all at once.

Although illness related to complications of the menopause are common, menopause is not an illness in itself and lots of women sail through it.

marilyntaylor · 13/01/2026 15:37

I used to have awful period pains. Truly horrendous! Then I had a really easy menopause. No symptoms apart from my periods stopping. My mum was exactly the same.

FancyCatSlave · 13/01/2026 15:40

My peri has been easy so far but not completely asymptomatic.

I had very light, painless regular periods before. Now have 2 or 3 a year. The flooding has been a bit of a shock but I know it’s still quite mild compared to some. I have one difficult 24hrs per cycle where it is easier to
be at home. But no pain. And as it is 2 or 3 days a year it’s not much of an issue. It’s like I get 4-6 months of bleeding in one go.

I have been very itchy, poor sleep and brain fog. Can’t have HRT at the moment due to some other health concern but I don’t feel I need it either really.

Pregnancy was easy, no symptoms, no sickness and I felt really well.

Sahara123 · 13/01/2026 15:40

I had horrendous periods my whole life, then went through the menopause without even noticing! Mirena coil completely saved me, my periods eventually stopped and I was blissfully ignorant as to what was going on !

Myswweetchild · 13/01/2026 15:41

I had dreadful period pains, right from the start. I appeared to have sailed through the menopause. I'm 59.
My sisters ( 58 and 64) never had any problems with period pains, but have had dreadful menopause experiences.
( I don't think being sporty is connected to period pains, but I was able to manage the pain somewhat because I was very sporty - tennis, athletics, keep fit ).

financialcareerstuff · 13/01/2026 15:48

I’m afraid not. I had always felt very blessed with periods. No issues beyond very minimal tummy upsets and slightly more delicate emotions for a couple of days, plus one night a month I slept a bit less well. The typical messes from unexpected starts but basically manageable, predictable flow. And 48 hrs every four weeks, so I felt pretty blessed.

im afraid peri hit me like a freight train. Anxiety, depression, total lack of energy and purpose, loss of focus, loss of hair. Felt 90 years old- just wanted to retire under my duvet and felt capable of very little. Also more anger than I’d ever experienced. Took me to the point that I didn’t think I could stay in my job, until I got on the right hrt.

Now I’m on a much more even keel. But even if I miss one day of oestrogen gel, I start to slip from an emotional point of view, so I feel both divinely grateful for and scarily reliant on hrt.

What's the relationship between being sport and period pains?

No idea other than my period was regular, pretty much pain-free and I didn't have PMS but friends who did no exercise suffered.
I put it down to having low body fat.

When I went on the pill, I had PMS so didn't stay on it.

Perimenopause was periods heavier than usual, less predictable, then stopped. That's it.
