If you never had period pains or pmt did you find menopause easier ?

I am hoping so, I’ve never had any period pains or symptoms or pmt and I never had any pregnancy symptoms or sickness, sore boobs or anything.
If you are not prone to hormonal side effects did you notice menopause so much?
My mum had never heard of peri and said her periods just stopped at 43 and she had no other symptoms and didn’t notice anything else, she too had no period pains or pmt.
Is it wishful thinking to think I might be lucky too then?

No never any issues ! Menopause was horrendous thankfully I got HRT and will be on it till I die !

Figgygal · 13/01/2026 20:49

Such an interesting question. I've been wondering this too
I've never really had trouble with my periods or my hormones as in mood swings etc. I'm 45 next week. Periods are still regular, although heavier the midlife weight gain is certainly catching me out. But other than my memory being totally shot, not really having any other symptoms. So keep questioning is this it am I Peri or is it just not hit me yet?

paranoidmumdroid1 · 13/01/2026 20:57

Same as others on here, periods never an issue but peri menopause - wow. The most dreadful few years of my life (until I staircased HRT up enough to feel normal again).

Hatty65 · 13/01/2026 21:01

I never had period pains or PMT - the odd twinge of tummy ache was about it. No cravings, no mood swings, nothing but finding periods a slight inconvenience.

I had a dreadful menopause before I went on HRT. Mood swings, panic attacks, bursting into tears, a feeling of doom, night sweats, massive anxiety. Also absolute brain fog and lack of confidence. I really, really struggled because having been a cheerful, level headed and calm person my entire life I had ZERO coping mechanisms or skills when I suddenly felt like I was going insane and out of control.

I'm post menopause now, still on HRT and never want to feel like that again, so hopefully you'll be ok, but I don't think there is any way to guess.

saveforthat · 13/01/2026 21:04

I had terrible period pains and pmt, I sailed through the menopause with no symptoms at all.

Remaker · 13/01/2026 21:07

No idea other than my period was regular, pretty much pain-free and I didn't have PMS but friends who did no exercise suffered.
I put it down to having low body fat.

When I went on the pill, I had PMS so didn't stay on it.

Perimenopause was periods heavier than usual, less predictable, then stopped. That's it.

So you just decided that your superior lifestyle was the reason?

Maybe do a bit of reading about professional athletes who struggle with period pain, endo etc. My DD plays 3 sports, does Pilates, is extremely slim but is absolutely crippled with period pain if she doesn’t take the pill. Have a bit of empathy.

OP I had terrible period pain and very heavy periods but menopause was a non event. My friend with endo had the same experience. Our two friends who’ve never had a cramp in their lives have really struggled with menopause.

TimetodoEverything · 13/01/2026 21:07

Conversely I had terrible period pains, but menopause has been the breeziest breeze ever. And I’m officially post menopausal.

MysticHalfWitch · 13/01/2026 21:08

Fraid not! I never had pain or PMT but this menopause business is a bitch!

hohahagogo · 13/01/2026 21:09

So far so good, I’m already 52 and they are down to a trickle

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 13/01/2026 21:22

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 13/01/2026 14:54

Never had period pains (partly I think because I was quite fit and sporty.) Periods stopped at 53 but , towards the end, they were quite heavy. I didn’t have any other menopausal symptoms but did put on weight.

Oh come on, you don't really think that do you? I did ballet, tap, ran and did netball and had such bad period pains.

Anyway, I didn't have any menopauseal symptoms. My periods stopped and that was that. Aged 41/42.

Mh67 · 13/01/2026 21:28

In one word no. It was awful

MrsB74 · 13/01/2026 21:49

i have always had moderate period pain, nothing too bad, and hormonal headaches. I was a bit irregular when younger. Had a relatively easy (twin) pregnancy with no sickness, just queasiness. Peri has been ok, no real issues, periods still very regular at 51. Might have more to come. I do notice my periods are better/more regular if I exercise and eat well, annoyingly! I’ve tested this a few times - definite correlation.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/01/2026 21:52

No pmt. Quite bad period pains.

Horrific menopause. Dryness, terrible terrible anxiety and insomnia. Got ill health retirement in the end it was so bad.

AncientMarina · 13/01/2026 21:55

I had reasonably bad PMT and dreadful period pains, especially when I was a teenager. I would faint with the pain almost every month.
I completely sailed through menopause apart from a few aching joints which passed in a year or two.

zipperzapper · 13/01/2026 21:55

Terrible PMT but I sailed through the menopause. Glad to see the back of PMT . My life is so much better now .

I don’t think she was suggesting exercise cures endo! For some people being fit helps, not everyone. As I’ve already posted, exercise definitely helps regulate my hormones in peri - I’m lazy by nature, but force myself to exercise as it really makes a difference. I have super slim and fit daughters who both struggle with period pain so I know it’s not that simple for everyone.

60andcounting · 13/01/2026 21:58

Heavy, very painful periods. Every so often would throw up with the pain, got worse, had fibroids. Had an hysterectomy at 49.
2 easy pregnancies, no morning sickness, quick labours.
Had hot flushes only. No other symptoms.

Eyesopenwideawake · 13/01/2026 21:58

Had awful period pain and PMT, a fibroid inspired partial hysterectomy at 46 and a relatively benign menopause two years afterward. Lasted about five years I think.

Im fit and sporty, I still get period pains!

Are you suggesting people that get period pains are unfilt and lazy?

Oooonoooeee · 13/01/2026 22:03

I didn’t have period pains, very light periods ,no pmt and fertility was never a problem.
I had last period aged about 47, perimenopause wasn’t ever mentioned ,no flushes but in hindsight my anxiety increased around that age but I didn’t link it with menopause.
All sounds wonderful ,but if I had been more aware (and I am a nurse ) I would have considered HRT for the health benefits !

northernballer · 13/01/2026 22:06

I played sport to a fairly decent level and saw some excellent athletes, including a household name, taken out with period pain so I really don't think being fit has much to do with it.

Physical activity might help as a distraction if it's mild and there is some evidence that training at different points in your cycle can benefit certain area of performance but it's certainly not pain relief.

Purpl · 13/01/2026 22:07

Tresd · 13/01/2026 14:58

I never suffered with periods really. Some pain on the first day of it, that was it really. Regular, no fertility issues, nothing to speak of. I was never prone to hormonal issues.

Well menopause was a bitch from hell, sorry to say. Utterly awful.

Exactly the same. Easy labours too. Horrific anxiety and no sleep. Was 40 GP disnt avcept it was menopause for years despite family history early menopause. Guess we dont get it all!!!

RyanFudgingMurphy · 13/01/2026 22:11

Bad period pains for a couple of days when I was younger. One pregnancy, had pre-eclampsia. Was on POP for much of my adult life until after I split with ex. Perimenopause had led to painless but very heavy periods. I don't think there's a science to it, I think it's the luck of the draw.

Motheranddaughter · 13/01/2026 22:13

i had no problems with my periods and sailed through the menopause with no issues

Merryhobnobs · 13/01/2026 22:15

Alas I am now getting PMT, hormonal headaches, sore boobs, unpredictable flow, as part of peri when before I used to have period pain and heavy periods but that was it. Such fun.
