If you never had period pains or pmt did you find menopause easier ?

I am hoping so, I’ve never had any period pains or symptoms or pmt and I never had any pregnancy symptoms or sickness, sore boobs or anything.
If you are not prone to hormonal side effects did you notice menopause so much?
My mum had never heard of peri and said her periods just stopped at 43 and she had no other symptoms and didn’t notice anything else, she too had no period pains or pmt.
Is it wishful thinking to think I might be lucky too then?

I had horrendous period pains and I sailed through menopause…in fact by the time I realized I was in it it was already over (was pregnant going through menopause).

Slimtoddy · 14/01/2026 21:47

I had a lot of period pain. Discovered late in life I actually have adenyosis hence the pain. I have had no menopause symptoms. In a lot of ways I feel better than when I had periods. I did have a baby very late and my elderly aunt told me I would not have a menopause.

singlenomingle · 14/01/2026 22:06

I had quite light periods before kids, then after 2 dc they went bonkers. After being on the pill they settled down. I’m in Peri and on HRT as I was struggling massively with low energy and anxiety, HRT has helped. however my mum had never heard of peri, her periods just stopped in her mid-late 40s. She does remember her last few ones were insanely heavy but then just poof and gone forever, no other symptoms she remembers. So no pattern or correlation for us.

Terrible periods. From teens onwards. Got worse and worse. no menopause symptoms, everything just stopped. Thank Goodness!

Oh come on, you don't really think that do you? I did ballet, tap, ran and did netball and had such bad period pains.

Anyway, I didn't have any menopauseal symptoms. My periods stopped and that was that. Aged 41/42.

Yes I do ! It is a scientific fact that exercise releases endorphins and very few of my sporty friends had problems with their periods!

KimberleyClark · 15/01/2026 10:51

I had period pains but never heavy periods, never flooded. Menopause was physically a walk in the park but mentally a car crash. My self esteen(fragile at the best of times) went though the floor, I had horrendous mood swings. My poor DH put up with a lot.

No idea other than my period was regular, pretty much pain-free and I didn't have PMS but friends who did no exercise suffered.
I put it down to having low body fat.

When I went on the pill, I had PMS so didn't stay on it.

Perimenopause was periods heavier than usual, less predictable, then stopped. That's it.

I do absolutely naff all exercise and have had regular, light painless periods all my life!

Was raised by my grandmother and she never had period pains. Every month, she’d say to me when I had cramps, “Ah sorry love, I don’t know what that’s like.” Every month. She was so funny. That said, she had some tough menopause symptoms - had horrible hot flashes from 60 to 90. I once watched her glasses fog up! But she never had issues with brain fog. I had bad period pains, all the women in my mum’s family (opposite side from my gran) have huge amounts of estrogen I think, as lots of period pains, lots of pregnancies, and lots of cancer; my mum’s had no issues at all with menopause (maybe because she already went through cancer and sepsis) but I had a terrible time because mine wasn’t natural (accidental medication-induced menopause). I don’t know if a really tough natural menopause is going to be better than the sudden one, I had; I still don’t think my body is done freaking out, and I imagine that’s also how women with very bad menopause feel. Anyone had immediate menopause at an early age?

Actually I have a PhD ! Is there really any need for you to be so abusive when I’m just stating my own personal experience?

Thistimearound · 15/01/2026 11:40

Interesting that so many women get heavier periods before they stop altogether. Mine (never heavy, tbh I could get away with using toilet roll) have been getting lighter and lighter the past year. I was wondering if this is how it ends - they just dwindle away to nothing. But maybe heavier is to come?

I’ve never had any symptoms of a period other than blood either. No pain, no PMT, no bloating.

BringBackCatsEyes · 15/01/2026 11:54

re the sport thing - I know doing sport helped ease my period pains.
Your weight impacts your hormonal status so I believe being a healthy weight and being active is a good thing. Of course it can't 'cure' endo or PCOS but for common or garden periods exercise helps.

Anyway, I have gone through life experiencing a little bit of everything, but nothing that impacted the quality of my life too much.
So, mild period pains (the odd doofus thrown in I suppose), pregnancy woes that weren't nice but OK (some sickness, heart burn, calf cramps etc), menopause stuff (bad sleep, aches and pains, unpredictable cycles).

My sister who has been very similar to me in most aspects had a HORRIBLE menopause.

Mine went lighter and slightly more frequent to start with (27 days to 23 days) then for the past 2 years I have had only 2 periods each year and 24hrs of each one has been very heavy (for me at least).

But I think everyone is different. They don’t hurt and it is just one mildly inconvenient day each time. The worst bit is I have no predictability.

Pig ignorant on this subject, because youre basing it on your lived experience.

A PhD clearly doesnt give you understanding on all subjects, nor compassion for others.

For those of us who are slim and healthy and do suffer horrendously with their periods, you can surely see how your previous comments to the opposite could seem ignorant?

Sharptonguedwoman · 15/01/2026 15:48

I'm not sure there's a correlation. I had little by way of period pain and a fairly early menopause that made me feel dreadful. Took the doctors ages to work out that I was peri. No hot flushes or similar but dreadful palpitations. I went so grey at work once, my colleagues bundled me into a car and took me to the doctor.

HRT? Absolute lifesaver. All the symptoms just melted away.

LucyLoo1972 · 16/02/2026 22:34

I never had terribel period pains or PMT I dont tihnk - a little pain sometimes.

I went into menopause instantly at 44 but it was when I had a psychotic breakdown - they just stopped overnight suddenly.

I thought it was because of the psychosis but how knows. but funnily enough I have zero other symptoms, not even weight gain although my MH means im not eating like I used to do.

the only thing I have is more hairs on my chin - -very unpleasant

I never made the connection but maybe its that.

I suppose the psychosis which ws caused by anxiety may have been a symptom.

doctor said there is no point me having HRT as I dont have any symptoms to treat. I was hoping it may help my anxiety.

yes I did at 44. I had a psychotic episode

Never had period pains (partly I think because I was quite fit and sporty.) Periods stopped at 53 but , towards the end, they were quite heavy. I didn’t have any other menopausal symptoms but did put on weight.

I had dreadful period pains and was also extremely fit and healthy. Being fit didn't seem to stop how painful they were unfortunately!

Endorphins would have done fuck all for my painful periods which turned out to be endometriosis
exercise didn’t really help with my bowel being folded over and my ovaries welded together

UnimaginableWindBird · 18/02/2026 06:52

It's also a lot harder to be fit and sporty when you spend two weeks a month feeling really ill.

To put the pain in context, I gave birth twice without even gas and air because there didn't seem to be any point in taking drugs until the pain was worse than the period pains which I had been told my whole life were no big deal and that I should just get on with things when affected by them.
