And not mummy anymore 😔
Didn’t think it would happen this young (7)
Want to be mummy a bit longer!

What age was your child when you started being called mum and how did it happen?

OP posts:
BecauseThatsHowYouGetAnts · 13/01/2026 21:02

My little boy is nearly 4 and he still calls me Mumma. I love it. I know its normal but it erks me when family and others refer to me as mummy or mum to him. Like nooooo, I wanna still be his Mumma.

MushyPeasAndMintSauce · 13/01/2026 21:08

I get variance of my name think - Chelle MICHELLE shelly
Sometimes Mummum ... Mama when she wants to be cute. I quite like Mummum.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 13/01/2026 21:17

I think by 2 were about 7 too. You have to let them grow up in little stages. 😊

msmillicentcat · 13/01/2026 21:23

My eldest (14) calls me mummy, mama, bruh, fam, darling, mother, mother dearest (when she wants something), amongst others words, but not mum.
My youngest (10) calls me mummy, mama, meema, middle, model, but not mum either!

grrrlatrix · 13/01/2026 21:33

I went from being “mummy” to “mother”! I’ve told them it makes them sound like Norman Bates. 😭

itsgettingweird · 13/01/2026 21:35

Mines 21 and calls me mother.

Id take mum any day 🤣

can’t remember when he switched form my mummy to mum. Nor mum to mother for that matter 🫣

IamnotSethRogan · 13/01/2026 21:36

My 10 year old still calls me mummy and my 15 year old still let's slip every so often. They're both boys though and I think they can be in less of a rush to grow up in some respects sometimes.

Anon501178 · 13/01/2026 21:39

My 8yo still calls me 'Mummy' she is young for her age though and has a little sister, but i think its nice and won't be rushing to push her otherwise, although have said to her its upto her now (when she was younger I used to mock being rather upset about it if she called me mum as a joke)

AdjectiveColourAnimal · 13/01/2026 21:46

My 11 year old still calls me mummy. Sometimes he full-names me and occasionally I get bruh. Once he called me mummy bruh 😂

ICanSpellConfusionWithaK · 13/01/2026 21:49

I refuse to answer to mum. So my 13yo still calls me mummy 😂

VanGoSunflowers · 13/01/2026 21:50

My 7 year old calls me Bro. You’re lucky 😂

Mydonkeyisred · 13/01/2026 21:51

My 19 year old still calls me Mummy.

I call them “famalan.” I know fine well that it’s meant to be “famalam” but I do it to be annoying. I also pronounce it “Fam-Alan.”

mwah ha ha

This is a special kind of annoying mum genius 😂 It even aggravates me and you’re not my mum!

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 13/01/2026 22:05

My 3 year old calls me mum! I find it funny!

ChaosMonkeyHandler · 14/01/2026 07:22

I’m Baba to my kids which seems to be sticking even as they get older so hopefully no mum or mother business here 🤣 the occasional bruv too

BitOutOfPractice · 14/01/2026 07:29

I think mine were about that age when I went from mommy to mom. I can’t remember really though.

I call my mom “mom” or Marvin which is the full formal version of the nickname Ma as everyone knows 😉

Is it wrong to say I don’t like mum as much and can she keep saying mummy

If your objection to the use of the word mum is simply that you don’t like it then it’s fine to say that but you need to offer her an alternative. However i suspect from your post your objections come from the perceived loss of her childhood. If this is the case then no you shouldn’t say anything and you need to let her grow up. For most of us mummy and daddy are babyish and something that we naturally transition out of. It’s not her job to grow at a pace that you’re ‘comfortable with’.

Horsemadlady1234 · 14/01/2026 07:39

In a teacher and can’t think of any children who at 7 still refer to mum as mummy. 4 or 5 year old yes. 7 no.

Boxoffrogs21 · 14/01/2026 07:44

Mine still call me ‘mummy’ at 12 and 14. I don’t feel like a ‘mum’ and I guess they don’t particularly call me anything most of the time, when I think about it. If I write them a message, I’ll use ‘mum’ and ‘dad’ in case their friends see it!

ICanSpellConfusionWithaK · 14/01/2026 08:17

@Horsemadlady1234 at school yes. My children would never call me mummy to their friends or at school, but at home they absolutely do.

Hmcs · 14/01/2026 08:45

7 year old and 15 year old both call us mother and father

i blame the 15 year old for starting this 😂

HebeMumsnet · 14/01/2026 10:52

When my kids were about 4 and 6 they only called me 'Sir' (military style) for about 6 months straight. I have no idea why! They just thought it was hilarious. So I would take 'mum', 'mother' or even 'bruh' over that.

Reminds me... it must be almost time for barracks inspection...

That really made me laugh! I'm quite fond of the salute emoji which my son occasionally uses in messages to me 🫡

Shes possibly being teased in school for being heard saying it because kids are little asswipes sometimes but ask her why and get the truth from her but in all honesty I feel your kids comfort on something like this tops your own so making her do something she’d rather not is a bit selfish on your part.

ScorchioScorchioScorchio · 14/01/2026 13:47

Mine still call me mummy at 17 & 15. I am surprised as I thought they would think it was baby-ish but I love it. They don't care if their friends hear too.
My niece is 5 and has been calling my brother and SIL Dad and Mum for ages.
