Skeletal model used in Boden mailshot

Has anyone else noticed the model in the recent Boden mailshot? She looks unhealthily thin. I thought we were moving away from 'heroin chic,' but it seems to be creeping back into mainstream marketing. It feels irresponsible for a brand like Boden to promote such a frail aesthetic as 'aspirational.'

This model is not remotely 'skeletal'. Think we need re-educating on what normal is...

Lollylavender · 12/01/2026 16:10

Obesity has become way too normalised if people think this model is anything other than fit & healthy!

Redpeach · 12/01/2026 16:15

Im surprised boden dont reflect their middle aged market more in their models

Liftedmeup · 12/01/2026 16:27

Middle aged? Its demographic is 25-50-year-olds, with a target on 35-year-olds.

Serencwtch · 12/01/2026 16:50

Slim & healthy young woman. I'd guess her BMI is around 19. Much rather see that than the morbidly obese 'plus size' models on places like snag tights etc. Yes they are also attractive young women but are very definitely not healthy.

Ohpleeeease · 12/01/2026 16:51

Nobody wants to see middle aged women modeling Boden clothes, even if that’s who’s actually wearing them.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 12/01/2026 16:55

Dagda · 12/01/2026 13:02

I don’t think you can comment on health by one photo.

i’m puzzled by Boden models and M&S ones.

These clothes target middle aged women but the models are so very tall and young and will owly. I’m sure these companies have done testing and these women sell clothes better. But I’d love if they had just a few photos of what a more normal sized person looks like in them . Not even plus sized. Just with some boobs and a bum so we can envision what it looks like on my middle aged body.

Their target audience is target upper middle class women or those aspiring to be upper middle class, and the sort of upper middle class thinness that goes with it.

Fat is a bit lower class.

35 is middle aged.

That’s exactly my take on the current trend of weight loss injections. Skinny or slim is going to be back in vogue but it’s going to be coupled with strength and muscle definition which is not easily obtained.

I read an article in the New York Times about the women having shapely arms and how it was the new sign of wealth and privilege…

Cant get muscles in an injection, it requires time and effort… It going to be the new body goal. Things will always shift to new heights.

Losing weight with WLI also requires time and effort.

I would like an app that shows me what I look like in clothes before I buy them. I at least prefer clothes stores that use a variety of models of different ages and sizes and allows customers to upload their own photos.

Brightlittlecanary · 12/01/2026 17:06

Boden say they target women 30-50 in the 70 plus k a year demo graphic. So it’s not just middle aged targets.

Uniqlo has this now.

Coconutter24 · 12/01/2026 17:09

All I see is a tall slim beautiful model.

mondaytosunday · 12/01/2026 17:12

It has been noted that skinny is back in, but I follow a couple male models and one was talking recently about having his bmi checked before he was booked for a runway show to make sure he was a healthy size.
This model doesn’t look particularly thin but hard to tell with what she is wearing.

TheGrinchWasHere · 12/01/2026 17:16

OwlBeThere · 12/01/2026 17:00

Losing weight with WLI also requires time and effort.

There is a significant difference in the amount of effort it takes to inject yourself once a week vs the time and effort it takes to build visible muscle in the gym.

Your argument is ridiculous. I am a WLI user who has spent years dieting and exercising to lose weight.

Watsonflannel · 12/01/2026 17:17

Isn’t she just whistling? So her cheeks are sucked in?

Me too but perhaps they're playing to that market while trying to avoid the whiff of frump which has followed them around.

She does look think but not skeletal, I do think now Ozempic is mainstream, thin will have to go to the next level to signal that status

ZebraPyjamas · 12/01/2026 17:22

SleeplessInWherever · 12/01/2026 12:19

Of course they’re not a homogeneous body type.

But the fact is you can see a variety of size 8 bodies on every website, advert, shop front already.

So quite why it would be a problem someone else having the same opportunity for their size would be a problem is beyond me. It can only be based on the perspective that your size is better somehow.

I wouldn’t bother looking on the Topshop website - their clothes don’t fit me. I’m not offended that they don’t, I’m not upset that the models of their clothes evidently can wear those clothes, in much the same way I don’t know why you’d be bothered that women of a size you’re not are wearing clothes that you don’t want to buy.

Fat people need tights too 🤷🏻‍♀️

The only way to know what an item of clothing looks like on you is to try it on! Doesn’t matter if you’re the same size as the model in a picture or not, hair colour/style, age, body shape, styling etc all effect what something looks like on a person

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 12/01/2026 17:24

She looks fine… she just has pronounced cheekbones

AttackCat · 12/01/2026 17:27

I naturally have similar proportions and live in baggy clothes because I hate the feeling of being judged.

Oh, we should stop clothes modelling altogether then. All the (many) size 8-14 models, no need for them either if they don’t actually represent anything or anyone.

Problem solved!

MadamCholetsbonnet · 12/01/2026 18:01

She looks like a regular tall slim model.

Do you mean her face? She’s blowing a kiss…

ACatNamedRobin · 12/01/2026 18:02

God OP you should visit Eastern Europe, or maybe Japan...Most young women there are that slim.

AllllPanicNoDisco · 12/01/2026 18:45

Screamingabdabz · 12/01/2026 13:19

I’m so sick of sending mail order clothes back I only tend to buy stuff where I’ve seen it a ‘real’ body. Not a 6ft size 6 model. You see Toast garments on a rake thin model and then when they do a feature on their store staff (of varying body shapes) garments hang differently and look differently depending on height/ curves/ proportions/ bust etc. I like Seasalt, Free People and Disturbia where people post photos in the reviews.

That Boden model is lovely but no way would somebody with her youth and figure be wearing long tummy hiding striped tops and shapeless navy trousers. They don’t do the clothes any justice and it alienates their core demographic I would have thought.

Are you actually okay?
I am sick of people like you thinking it's okay to blatantly insult slim / skinny women. Why do you get the right to claim what's a 'real' body and what's not? Calling women 'rakes?'

if someone on here posted saying an obese model looked like a fucking barge it would be deleted in a heart beat.

be a better person.

Ablondiebutagoody · 12/01/2026 19:02

Thin people are allowed to exist and work for a living. Not everyone is a fatty.
