Skeletal model used in Boden mailshot

Has anyone else noticed the model in the recent Boden mailshot? She looks unhealthily thin. I thought we were moving away from 'heroin chic,' but it seems to be creeping back into mainstream marketing. It feels irresponsible for a brand like Boden to promote such a frail aesthetic as 'aspirational.'

@Heartbreaksally I'm sorry if I caused any offence; that certainly wasn't my intention. I think perhaps I was just reacting to what looks like AI manipulation or digital editing, which makes the proportions in the image look a bit off.

No you were not. Just own it, there is no way you only saw that image.

cinquanta · 12/01/2026 11:50

BillieWiper · 12/01/2026 11:31

Oh yeah the feet! Lol. Yeah she's just been bent out of proportion hasn't she?

That’s just down to the brochure being photographed at an angle. Her feet are closer to the camera.

MaidOfSteel · 12/01/2026 11:50

She is tall, of course, but very, very thin. You’re right, OP. I’m shocked to see people saying this woman is normal size. I’m only a 12 but would look huge next to her.

I’ve noticed that the ultra-thin models are starting to appear again, and it is worrying.

Balloonhearts · 12/01/2026 11:51

She does look skeletal but I think its the way it's been edited. Her legs aren't in proportion to how thin her arms and torso look. She's also sucking her cheeks in and her makeup is terrible, which is making her look more gaunt.

If you look at the image of her just walking, she's totally normal sizes. It's just shit photography and even worse editing in the bike picture.

I assure you that is the only image I saw. It was on the front of the mailshot.

She’s not skeletal, she’s tall and slim.
we seem to have forgotten what slim looks like these days.

The uncanny valley reaction. I'm starting to get that more and more. Bit off track here, but I think estate agents are starting to use chatgpt to alter images, and it results in something feeling off.

It would be useful to have some sort of label on images to say if they've been altered. More healthy for teens too if its images of bodies/faces.

Bloozie · 12/01/2026 11:53

I agree that she looks skeletal. It's not her face - that's just posing and make up - it's her actual frame. The clothes are hanging off her. Side note - isn't her body long?

But I think you'd need to see more photos of her to understand whether it's just angles or irresponsible. Chances are, she's just a tall slim woman that looks a bit like Skeletor in this photo. Are there any shots of her inside the mailer?

TheChicDreamer · 12/01/2026 11:53

I’m 5’9” and a size 8 and to me she looks like I did when I was under 8 stone and had an eating disorder.

333FionaG · 12/01/2026 11:54

I prefer to see slender people modelling clothes. I'd rather that than the unhealthy morbidly obese models that Snag Tights use to advertise their range.

Goldfsh · 12/01/2026 11:55

She looks extremely thin to me but no more so that most fashion models.

I think the young wimmin these days are having an EXTREME BLUSHER moment. Massive red cheeks like you've got mumps seem to be very in.

TheBerry · 12/01/2026 11:56

Give over OP. She looks slim, yes. Not necessarily unhealthy or skeletal - she’s wearing baggy clothes so neither you nor I nor anyone can actually tell if she’s dangerously underweight. Your daughter has the right idea in not judging her for her weight.

Being underweight isn’t healthy, being overweight isn’t healthy, both extremes exist, both are represented in fashion - rightly or wrongly.

Cryingatthegym · 12/01/2026 11:02

This is a normal sized woman.

Define ‘normal’

I don't like the Snag models because they don't represent my proportions and so it's hard to understand what the clothes will look like on me. I'm overweight, but I don't carry the weight in the same way as some of their more obese models.

What Snag's marketing DOES do is clearly communicate that what they offer will be available in my size and cut in a way that accommodates larger bodies, rather than just sized up.

Slender models don't communicate that at all.

I prefer brands that don't make a statement either way.

This was all I received through the post but a PP above posted a photo of the model looking much healthier in another pic so I'm coming to the conclusion that it's AI manipulation making proportions look off as others have suggested. @MrsBridgetMcClusky had to look up uncanny valley reaction... v interesting...

God Snag is just as awful, I don’t think extreme bodies at either end should be used for advertising. Very morbidly obese people and very underweight people should not be used for trying to sell clothes.

She looks fine in the 2nd pic. Not heroin chic by any standard.

She’s very attractive with a slender long figure .
I definitely can’t see what you see !

More that people on the internet were unsurprisingly eager to tell them that they were still terrible people and had no business liking themselves or being seen as thinking they had worth beyond the volume of air they took up.

Exactly. Especially on here, really bad for body negativity.

SleeplessInWherever · 12/01/2026 12:04

Snag covers sizes 4-38, and a quick look on their website shows me images of women of various sizes - they’re not all overweight.

I don’t see anything wrong with showing clothes on bigger bodies that you do actually cater for.

How is a size 24 woman, for example, supposed to reliably buy clothes that fit if nobody ever shows them on a body like hers.

eastegg · 12/01/2026 12:06

I think it’s a crap photo. Her torso looks very long, partly because of the style of the cardigan, she looks like she’s got a bruise on her face and the E of Boden makes it look a bit like something is missing around her torso area at a glance, BUT I don’t think she looks skeletal and I really dislike such words being bandied around about slim women.

it’s not a statement, no retailer can give images to cater for every size permeatation.

shocked others sayinf she looks skeletal. We really have lost sight of a health weight, and thay woman is the lower end of a healthy weight, but no way her bmi is 18 or below.

No her proportions aren’t off at all, when I colour where her waist is you can see they aren’t,
