To have thrown a bunch of smashed up old mobile phones in the bin

Sims removed but otherwise just as they were

I'd been keeping of them to "destroy securely" but they're driving me insane around the house so enough was enough

Will I get digitally kidnapped now? They were really old and shit phones.

I would probably put a toaster in the bin yes. The TV wouldn't fit so I'd book a special collection from the council.

You would throw an appliance in to a landfill bin… that says it all really.

Posters, it’s a lost cause let’s move on.

Agree. And OP knows what a council is to book appliance collection - but when I mention they are the fine-issuers continually states there is no legal authority to instigate and collect those fines. "But I am intelligent actually".

I just don't believe most people recycle this stuff

Maybe this thread should be titled aibu to think nobody recycles batteries

Really irresponsible. I don't know anyone who doesn't recycle electronics and batteries! Virtually every supermarket has a battery recycling tower. Please use one in future

Pavementworrier · 11/01/2026 19:52

I guess where I live I'm well aware that very few people have the time or energy to be sorting their bins in any particular detail so there will be batteries (and foil??) in general waste and this must be something local authorities adjust for.

Maybe my data will be stolen by the local authority death battery checker as karma.

Oh do they - I'm not well at present so people are annoying me more than they should. Thanks for this. Will abandon the thread as do not have the energy for ass-hattery.

How do you get MN to remove a blatant bored persons thread ?

@Pavementworrier Of course people recycle batteries and mobile phones.
Sticking them in the bin can cause fires in the bin wagon and is a massive waste of precious resources.
Bring yourself into the 21st century.

In an electrical bin.

Your council probably has a list on its website telling you want goes in each bin. We are fortunate enough to get a handy leaflet each year. I'm adding a picture of part of it since you don't believe people...

If this is a genuinely huge deal it is probably a public good to leave it up!

In London at least, but probably elsewhere too, there have been huge bus ads everywhere about recycling small electricals. That ad with the purple cat?

But I thought everyone knew it already.

Op do you chuck your cigarette butts on the ground because "they're biodegradable"? (They're not, not for many years). Or leave dog poo bags under hedges?

Nothing to do with net zero and everything to do with not wanting to turn our country into a wasteland

Take it to the tip to a designated appliance area. With small appliances I can fit in a bag I’ll take to a curry’s or an Apple Store. I would not throw it in the bin!!

Not sure how you can be unaware of the need to recycle batteries and any other item that CAN be recycled...
Huge fires (with measurable associated deaths) for lithium batteries sent in general waste

I think you just spam it with non-related, boring facts until they get tired and go and watch the #peeyourpants challenge on TikTok, which they were probably doing (and I mean literally in both senses) before they started this thread.

I'll start: from 1977 to 2011, the national flag of Libya was green.

Thank you for this, this is the leaflet I mentioned upthread!

Op you need to read your new year recycling leaflet!

colourchanginglipstick · 11/01/2026 19:56

I wouldn't have know about batteries either tbh if it wasn't for my husband telling me. I don't set foot inside supermarkets/stores etc and do all my shopping online so haven't seen the bins. How do you dispose of them if you don't live near a store that takes them?
