Sims removed but otherwise just as they were

I'd been keeping of them to "destroy securely" but they're driving me insane around the house so enough was enough

Will I get digitally kidnapped now? They were really old and shit phones.

Well I had zero idea and I've binned a fair few over the years

Well you know now, so now you can do the right thing. Tonight.

If they find batteries when they collect your bins and it's obvious they came from your bins then you can be fined.

Fined based on what?

I used to work for local council and bin lorry fires due to lithium batteries being punctured / compressed does happen. It’s actually an increasing problem as so much stuff has batteries. Disposable vapes for example thst no one thinks twice about chucking.

I think you should of hit it with a hammer and chucked in electrical bin tbh.

I don't currently have any batteries to bin. If I'm honest I'm probably not going to bother recycling them in the future, though.

I would if I knew electrical bins existed! Assuming they're not 25 miles away or something.

Congratulations on being a useless member of society. Hope you get fined.

Honestly think if it's such a big deal they should put posters up or something

I just don't believe most people recycle this stuff

Maybe this thread should be titled aibu to think nobody recycles batteries

We took a Ziploc bag of batteries to Tesco this morning in the way back from DS' gymnastics class. I just keep the bag in a drawer in the kitchen and when I have dressed batteries at to it, when there's a fair few in there and I need to go to Tesco I take it and empty into the battery bin. It's not an effort. I knew we'd go after Christmas as we have a fair few lights etc that are battery operated.

Fined based on what?

Because you are disposing of them incorrectly and in opposition to the law.

I mean you can google all of this - if you're on Mumsnet you can google.

It's literally written on the back of every battery packaging

Yes there are! It's via your local authority - an FPN. You're just winding people up now - no one can deliberately be this dense.

I think the environmental impact is worse than any risk to your data.

This.

It's not too late to retrieve them - even if your rubbish is collected in the morning, you just don't want to do it! Get your rubber gloves on and get it sorted. It's really irresponsible and dangerous.

It was collected this morning and there have been zero fiery infernos reported since

Batteries of any kind should never go in the general bin as they cause fires. I put batteries into a little box when they get swapped out, and when I next go to the tip, dispose of them there. I think that’s what any responsible citizen does.

On you not recycling batteries and phones. This is sonso bad and i hope you get fined. I really really do

HoldingTheDoor · 11/01/2026 19:39

How on earth have you managed to ignore/miss the hundreds of reports and articles about the dangers of lithium batteries?

And no it is not too late to retrieve them. It might be a bit unpleasant but it’s better than killing some poor refuse worker just because you can’t be bothered to recycle them.

Refuse workers use hand held fire extinguishers to try and put the fire out in the back of a bin lorry. A large amount of smoke and some flames can be seen

Brixton bin lorry fire prompts warnings over battery disposal - BBC News

LFB warned against throwing away lithium batteries after the "frightening" fire in south London.

Can honestly tell you I have never heard of this so I am quite confident most other people haven't either

Sorry, binmen, I do respect your art a great deal

I never bin batteries. Been dropping them off for recycling for well over a decade at least.

I have a tub over my sink where batteries, foil, electrical cables and small items and crockery all goes in to be dropped at recycling every so often.

City centre. Big communal bins. Daily collections a serious boon.
