AIBU to keep quiet about a competition cash win?

800metresprint · 10/01/2026 21:26

I’ve won £1000 in a competition but not yet told anyone as I don’t have the money as yet (it does seem like a genuine win!).

At first I thought of telling my immediate family (DH and 3 teens) and sharing it out equally but I’m now thinking of staying quiet, keeping it in my account and just using it for carefree treats for the family as I fear the kids would go on a reckless spending spree (but maybe that’s a good thing too?)

AIBU to keep quiet about the money?

I’d absolutely keep in quiet in those circumstances

iReallyThinkRoseHadRoomOnThatFloatingDoor · 10/01/2026 21:27

£1000 wouldn't make a spending spree between 5 of you?

I'd keep it quiet

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 10/01/2026 21:29

I would keep quiet or maybe tell DH and treat him to a nice dinner. But otherwise I wouldn't say anything.

ThejoyofNC · 10/01/2026 21:30

How on earth could your kids go on a spending spree with your money? Seems bizzare to me.

I'm assuming this is a large amount of money to you?

MagicStarrz · 10/01/2026 21:31

Well £1000 isn't actually a lot of money OP so I don't think you need to announce or or keep it secret. You could maybe treat the family to a meal out, if you wanted, but also fine not to. I don't mean to sound awful but it's not like you've won millions so I don't think it matters who you tell. Do what works for you.

Overthebow · 10/01/2026 21:31

£1k I’d keep quiet. No need to tell anyone, just keep it and use if you want or add to savings. If it were £100k I’d tell immediate family.

AdoreTheChaos · 10/01/2026 21:33

It depends on whether you will slip up down the line. I’d have to say because I’d drop myself in it when I used some of the money.

Scottishskifun · 10/01/2026 21:33

From teens yes from DH no - but I would say oh it looks like I've got an extra 1k from this competition. Will use it for family treats til it runs out.

PineappleMelon · 10/01/2026 21:35

It’s your win, enjoy it.

blobby10 · 10/01/2026 21:37

I wouldn’t tell anyone else. Like PP if it was £100k then I would tell and share with my kids but still no one else as I wouldn’t be sharing it further!! A million pounds maybe I’d be more generous 🤣🤣

Tammygirl12 · 10/01/2026 21:39

£1000 isn’t tons - you can’t do a whole family holiday for examples :(

ffsnewusername · 10/01/2026 21:41

To some people £1k is a lot of money. OP, ignore the arrogance of some posters and do with it what you wish

Nimblethimble · 10/01/2026 21:41

How would you feel if DH had won that and not told you?

ShesTheAlbatross · 10/01/2026 21:42

What do you mean you fear the kids would go on a spending spree? How could they, with your money?

I’d tell my husband and it would go into the family pot that is nothing to do with the children.

Whaleandsnail6 · 10/01/2026 21:44

I think you should definitely tell your husband. Not so important to tell the kids

Lamentingalways · 10/01/2026 21:44

Keep it in your ‘leave if he has an affair / becomes abusive savings acct’

SliceofTosst · 10/01/2026 21:47

Keep it to yourself.

OSTMusTisNT · 10/01/2026 21:52

I would tell my husband but not the kids. £1K really isn't much these days and you could put it towards having a few treats for the family this year e.g Cinema trip with all the trimmings, day out in April holidays etc.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 10/01/2026 21:53

I’m shocked by some of these replies - if my husband kept winning £1k from me I’d be really hurt and angry.

800metresprint · 10/01/2026 22:34

The kids would only go on a spending spree once I gave them some of the money. Obviously lots of people on here don’t think £1000 is a lot of money but to us it is! (I know it’s not life changing but it’s also quite a lot I would think)

OP posts:
TomatoSandwiches · 10/01/2026 22:42

It doesn't matter if it's a lot or not a win is a win! Congratulations op, I would tell my husband and give the kids £100 each and put the rest aside for an emergency fund like the washing machine breaking or something.

So don’t give them anything? Or just amounts you feel comfortable to give? It’s your money, nobody controls where it goes except you.

I'd keep it quiet

It would for many people

ChatterMonkey · 10/01/2026 22:51

Cant believe the posters saying they would keep it secret from their DP, couldn't imagine doing that if I won £50, never mind £1000.

edwinbear · 10/01/2026 22:51

I keep my premium bonds wins quiet (£250 this month and £275 in December), because any whiff of a bit of extra cash, DC suddenly discover they NEED new trainers, new coats, new sports equipment etc. I save it up for when they genuinely do need something, or as a family, we fancy a meal out or something.
