I think that "Immigration and Customs Enforcement" was set up as its own agency post-9/11. It didn't have a great reputation (law enforcement in the US doesn't generally) but the following 20 years were fairly unremarkable.
From Trump's second inauguration a year ago however, there was a massive increase in budget, a massive increase in recruitment, and a massive targets to hit. So complex cases involving actual bad people were dropped so that all resources could be deployed in lifting as many people from the streets as possible.
Anyone who wasn't white was considered fair game, and the agents (with the extra recruitment the standards haven't been high) have been targetting just about anyone they don't like the look of. They don't care if you're a perfectly legal resident or even a citizen, they'll claim that your papers are fake and they'll disappear you to one of their detention centres.
These detention centres amount to torture. Sleep deprivation, fluorescent lights on all night, overcrowding, just some foil for comfort. They won't offer you the opportunity to phone your family to let them know that you're OK, nor will you be offered a lawyer. Some bystanders when you're arrested may hear you shouting your name and address and try and get in touch with your family (local social media groups are full of this). Then your family, their lawyer, and good samaritans in the community will try and track you down.
Your lawyer might get a temporary court order stopping any deportation but they'll just put you on a plane to a country that you've never been to and say "oops". Then you (with your lawyers) have to fight to get back home. They'll find any excuse to avoid complying with any court orders to bring you back, right up until the judge threatens the government lawyers with personal sanctions.
I've barely scratched the surface of the shit which has been going on.
