I came into the school at lunch time, visitor to the school. It was end of lunch. Over heard lunch time supervisor saying all the children are feral and then ‘I think half of them are inbred’?

Who was He/ She talking to?

Newone123456 · 06/01/2026 18:41

Yes, the half inbred in not on. Joking the kids are feral not awful if having a bad day with them playing up etc but to then say half are inbred, that’s concerning.

Evaka · 06/01/2026 18:43

Yeah, that's a fucking awful thing to say. Doesn't matter who they were saying it to. They shouldn't be working with these kids if they're so disdainful.

wonderstuff · 06/01/2026 18:43

I mean it’s not ideal, I imagine she was having a bad day, if it was a school I worked at I’d report it to the line manager, not something that you’d want visitors or kids to overhear.

Well yes it does, it could have been the Headteacher they were saying it too, for all anybody knows.

BillieWiper · 06/01/2026 18:51

It does depend on who they said it to, what they were usually like and who heard.

Pieceofpurplesky · 06/01/2026 19:04

To be fair the kids I teach were feral
today - in the context of school kids (and animals) it means my once lovely class were wild (it was the snow today). It seems to be a word used by lots of teachers. Is it better or worse than 'little shits' or 'a pain in the arse'?

The inbred thing, however, is totally wrong.

Bellee108 · 06/01/2026 20:09

It was said to another lunch time supervisor I believe.

OP posts:
FrodisCapering · 06/01/2026 22:50

Just leave it. Perhaps they'd had to deal with a lot from the kids today.

sprigatito · 06/01/2026 22:52

The feral bit is par for the course, the inbred bit crosses a line. I would report it.

NopeMockery · 06/01/2026 22:54

I would report ‘inbred’. It is offensive and may potentially have racist undetones. There is no excuse.

Really? No matter how bad your day is going, if you feel like calling children inbred is appropriate you’re probably in the wrong job. I wouldn’t call my adult employees inbred.

I wouldn’t want anyone with the capacity to talk like that about my child anywhere near them.

VikaOlson · 06/01/2026 23:04

If they were talking to another adult and not saying it to the children, I'd leave it.

golemmings · 06/01/2026 23:22

In our local school, the TAs used to be called auntie because they were an auntie to the majority of the kids in class.
Rural remote community, not too many incomers and most families are interrelated.

There are about 5 surnames that I think most people within a 30mi radius can claim within 3 generations. Id say that is relatively inbred.

TalulahJP · 07/01/2026 09:34

maybe the little bast, er i mean darlings are inbred. there are areas around me that are like that.

i would leave it. whats the point in saying anything. it won’t change their feelings on the subject.

Nope. Joking that the children are feral is one thing, saying that they are inbred is another.

OhDear111 · 07/01/2026 09:48

@Bellee108 So you aren’t sure who it was said to? I’d possibly try and speak to the head about language used in school by staff. Even if it’s to each other. It’s a school and standards should be high. Of course, the statement might have been true but it’s not something an adult looking after dc should say. Leave it up to SLT to deal with it in a way they think appropriate - not say anything derogatory in front of visitors, children or parents would be my suggestion.

ClawsandEffect · 07/01/2026 09:48

It's humour. Not said to a child. Between two members of staff. Was it nice? No. But as long as they're kind to the children, it's irrelevant. They'll be on minimum wage and schools HUGELY struggle to recruit minimum wage staff with minimum hours available.

They're stopping the kids from killing each other in the playground, not teaching them core values in the classroom.

caringcarer · 07/01/2026 09:52

I'd report on the basis if you overheard then a DC can overheard too.

ilovesooty · 07/01/2026 09:56

In what capacity were you visiting? What prevented you from challenging this when you heard it?

surreygirly · 07/01/2026 09:59

Grow up fgs

IwishIcouldconfess · 07/01/2026 10:08

FFS, the kids are probably feral and inbred!

Have you never made a throwaway comment to a colleague?? I have every bloody day I go into work.

People are allowed to have opinions, even if they differ to yours, because do you know what, she is probably saying what others are thinking!

Including those of you who are saying its out of order!

The2ndMrsMaximDeWinter · 07/01/2026 10:13

It's not great but why didn't you call them out at the time? Could have easily said "that's a bit harsh" whilst smiling and it would have made the member pause for thought and hopefully stopped any future similar comments.

Sorted.

I honestly cannot understand why people hear something then go away and wonder if it "report it" or not. Do you actually want the staff member to be sacked for that?

worrisomeasset · 07/01/2026 10:31

The dining supervisor has encountered some poor behaviour but there's no suggestion that they've said anything inappropriate to the children. Nothing to see here, move along...

You really think that 50% of the children have parents who are siblings?
