I came into the school at lunch time, visitor to the school. It was end of lunch. Over heard lunch time supervisor saying all the children are feral and then ‘I think half of them are inbred’?

But saying inbred in wrong when in some schools/areas it is an accurate representation of the cohort?

Which schools, areas and cohorts is that? Whole classrooms 50% full of children born from incest?

CinnamonBuns67 · 07/01/2026 12:26

I would report her suggesting that half the kids are inbred. That's out of order.

Saying the kids are feral, it's not the best use of language especially using it in a professional environment but I could overlook it.

If it was the feral comment alone I'd say to not bother but with the inbred comment I'd absolutely report exactly what happened.

Periperi2025 · 07/01/2026 12:26

@Bellee108
Be sure to never go out with a group of drunk HCPs, you'd never get over the way patients are described.
It's normal to use black humour to manage emotions in stressful jobs.
Just leave it.

itsthetea · 07/01/2026 12:27

Inbred doesn’t just refer to incest

it is more broadly referring to people marrying too close to their blood family for health

the royal families of Europe were known for this
as are some ethic communities in the UK, and indeed some regions of England have health traits that are a result of inbreeding over previous generations

but in this case someone was venting and someone else was earwigging - which is a nasty habit

YANBU, I cannot fucking stand uppity non-teaching staff, the ones at my DS’s school are awful and total bullies, and my nephew who has ADHD and autism was terrified of going to his school (different school in another part of the country) because of the nastiness of the TAs and lunchtime supervisors, and ended up being off for 2 full terms.

I can’t believe people are saying she must have had a bad day. So what - pull yourself together and keep the words inside! It’s day 2 of the new term and you’re talking about children within earshot of parents. No excuses to make such horrible insults. If school staff hate children so much they need to leave that job, not be validated by people who got some reason think that having a low paid job entitles you to nastiness

Who said they hate the children? On a good day it's probably fine, first few days back may be chaos and by the end of the shift a little letting off steam is understandable.

Yes I’m sure it wasn’t a bitchy conversation but a discussion about the pupil demographic. Definitely rings true.

Iwantamarshmallowman · 07/01/2026 12:31

For goodness sake wind your neck in. You overhead two colleagues making a joke. Are you hoping this person will lose their job? I would suggest you take a good hard look at yourself and please if you are board do some voluntary work or something.

JayJayj · 07/01/2026 12:48

They are allowed to vent. She hasn’t said it to children. Was probably had a bad day. Leave it alone and get on with your life.

RudolphTheReindeer · 07/01/2026 12:59

Feral fine. Inbred not fine and a horrible thing to think let alone say.

RudolphTheReindeer · 07/01/2026 13:01

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 07/01/2026 12:18

I don't get why Feral is ok but PP are getting so worked up over Inbred

And I think you'll find most people who work with children will have called them feral, bastards, little shits etc at some point

It wasn't said TO the children. Let it go

Have they? I certainly don't.

Crochetandtea · 07/01/2026 13:03

I wouldn’t report it. It could be partially true in some areas. Some kids are dreadful and dragged up by crappy parents . It’s understandable that those looking after them get frustrated. As long as a child didn’t hear it then I’d keep quiet.

OhDear111 · 07/01/2026 13:04

@BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKindI actually dislike both. It’s describing dc as being animals and not well bred! It’s disparaging whatever way you look at it. I’d not be happy with anything like this being said about my dc as they were not wild animals or with dubious parentage. Professional people should use appropriate language but feral seems ok to many - I don’t agree.

Why are you so caught up with 50%??

Do you really think inbred means incest??

CautiousLurker2 · 07/01/2026 13:20

I’d report it - not necessarily because it’s a sign of neglect or abuse in the setting itself, but I’d definitely question whether that member of staff if coping and whether their mental health was okay. If I were a fellow member of staff I would wonder why they are teaching if this is how they feel about children - and whether they should continue to do so without an intervention.

Have been a youth leader, guide/scout leader, childminder and even teacher (briefly), so totally understand how some groups of kids can be challenging and make you unhappy if you simply cannot manage them - but that was a me issue and I certainly wouldn’t have used the inbred slur - that is classist and discriminatory.

All the people I know who work with children definitely have

And I bet you have really

Have you worked with children recently?

Animals, not well bred, ill mannered etc are all fairly accurate at times

Owly11 · 07/01/2026 13:29

Ffs just leave it. People are allowed to off load. They are even allowed to be offensive. What is your aim? Get someone fired and have a vacancy?

Berlinlover · 07/01/2026 13:35

I’d let it go.

Omg

having a rant with a trusted friend and colleague is a great way to protect your mental health / are you so uptight that you have a problem with yours?

faux concern

Yes email the school and if you can provide details of who said it. Inbred and feral - nope.

FerriswheelsKissesandLilacs · 07/01/2026 13:42

It's really hard to get lunchtime supervisors. It's poorly paid, stressful and rubbish hours.

This week of term is generally awful, and even worse because of the snow.

She made a jokey throwaway comment to a colleague about it. Move on with your life.

We are animals. Wildness varies between people. Most children are not especially domesticated.

Did anyone else hear this ?

If not, then I am sure you can see how your "report" may come across.

And if someone else did hear it, what is their opinion ? Why are they not reporting it ?

I guess it's just me then.

Tessasanderson · 07/01/2026 13:47

Truth hurts. Half the kids i witness these days could easily come under the same tags. It sounds like you overheard an overworked, under appreciated member of staff talking to a workmate. Having to deal with all the issues and problems children who lack any real parenting are thrust upon these schools.

Time to stop pussy footing around them. They are dragging children who know how to behave down.
