I came into the school at lunch time, visitor to the school. It was end of lunch. Over heard lunch time supervisor saying all the children are feral and then ‘I think half of them are inbred’?

Wow, imagine the uproar if people knew what was said in the staffroom between lessons. I've heard a lot worse, trust me.

YANBU, I cannot fucking stand uppity non-teaching staff, the ones at my DS’s school are awful and total bullies, and my nephew who has ADHD and autism was terrified of going to his school (different school in another part of the country) because of the nastiness of the TAs and lunchtime supervisors, and ended up being off for 2 full terms.

I can’t believe people are saying she must have had a bad day. So what - pull yourself together and keep the words inside! It’s day 2 of the new term and you’re talking about children within earshot of parents. No excuses to make such horrible insults. If school staff hate children so much they need to leave that job, not be validated by people who got some reason think that having a low paid job entitles you to nastiness

I can see someone at my DD's school saying this. She's a right miserable old cow, has been at the school since I was there in the 90s and was just as much of a miserable cow then. She was a dinner lady back then but now she's a TA. God knows why anyone thought she should have a position that's closer to kids as she clearly hates them.
She also lived on our road growing up and used to come out and shout at us if we played in the road outside her house and once screamed at me for saying hello to her dog.
Some people simply shouldn't be working in schools. They're not all having a bad day.

I'd report on the basis if you overheard then a DC can overheard too.

That's snake like behaviour IMO

but “uppity” teaching staff are ok!…?

why are you so snobby and derogatory towards non teaching staff @OscillateItsTitsALot ?

Maybe they dont hate all children, just nasty fereal ones?

Not all kids are cute and well behaved. There are boys in primary schools that show signs of hating women, yes i know its its learned behaviour, but it is also very frightening when you are on the receiving end of it and have a male about the same size as you snarling in your face calling you a fat cunt.
Its clear that some people on mn have no real life expierence of how vicious and violent some children are.

I absolutely love working with children and families but there are more than a few where we have to work in twos or even threes with some children to stay safe.

mazedasamarchhare · 07/01/2026 19:57

I mean you could report it to the head, make sure you time and date the incident, have the name of persons concerned and hand it in. I can 100% say that without evidence nothing will get done about a throw away comment. Some schools really struggle to get lunchtime co-ordinators in, so at most (providing you have supplied details in writing) the relevant member(s) of staff might get a reminder of appropriate conversation, but I doubt the head would want to risk losing staff when it’s such a ball ache to recruit!

neverbeenskiing · 07/01/2026 20:16

I'm really surprised at the number of responses minimising this. No one who works in a school, whatever their role, should be making derogatory and insulting comments about children like that and especially not in an area where they can be overheard by visitors and potentially children.
I agree with pp that Lunchtime Supervisor is a tough and poorly paid role, but at my school we treat them as valued colleagues and expect a basic standard of professionalism in return.
If I overheard a child making disrespectful and derogatory comments about one of our Lunchtime Supervisors I would be making it very clear to that child that this is unacceptable and will not be tolerated, so why shouldn't it go both ways? Adults have to lead by example.
I'm not saying this person deserves to be sacked, but it definitely warrants a conversation.

I was once helping at an event with some Y6 kids. There were a couple of boys who ended up being taken out because they clearly had no respect for and wouldn't listen to us women running the event

It was pretty sobering to see tbh

sprigatito · 07/01/2026 19:39

This would make it less appropriate for a staff member to say it at work, not more. Good grief 🙄

Exactly. I have no respect for anyone who uses that kind of ridiculous justification.

OhDear111 · 08/01/2026 14:02

I don’t like the normalised use of the word feral to describe children either. They are not animals and staff are wrong to use this word. Years ago words like exhausting, lively, headstrong, active or energetic would describe dc or how staff felt. It says something about adults that they see dc as feral animals or inbred which alludes to SEN. Very poor in my view.

No some kids really just are feral

Headstrong and lively don't cover it

budlea64 · 08/01/2026 14:42

You could potentially lose someone their job. I wouldn't.
It's not great language to use but they've probably had a lot of ill-mannered kids to deal with and it's hot and hard work in a kitchen.

Horrace · 08/01/2026 14:52

I can't believe you are so upset and offended by this. If none of the kids heard it, and so what if they did. It really isn't a big deal. Get over it.
I was expecting to hear some horrid racist language the way you went on.
Fuck me. Teachers said way worse when we were kids.
If you were so shocked you should have spoke up to the culprit at the time.

In my experience with schools it’s the total opposite! It’s the TA’s that run the schools, look out and take care of the kids with the Teaching staff trying to work with the weight of the chips they are carrying on their shoulders! It’s certainly not the assistants that are the bullies.
