I’m about to be taken down by the flu…

So, I’ve had my DC in my bed since Saturday am. High temp, coughing, snotting, sneezing, all within inches of me. He hasn’t moved out of bed other than to use the bathroom-very unlike him, so I know he feels rough af!
He asked me for a drink about 2 hours ago, and I can’t get back to sleep… headache, scratchy throat. I’d say it’s inevitable that I’m now getting his lurgy.
How can I prep for this? I’ve got paracetamol in the house already. Just curious how other people(with kids/single parent) manage it(and when to call a priest 😂

Good luck. I’m on day 5 and it’s brutal. DD started with it yesterday so that will be fun.
lots of fluids, paracetamol is about all I can suggest

Feelinfluey · 06/01/2026 03:19

I’m dreading it! Going to go to the supermarket tomorrow and stock up on things I’ll likely need over the next few days

Can't you use something like Whoosh instead of going yourself?

badboss2020 · 06/01/2026 03:24

Mine came on very quickly following the scratchy throat. Nights have been worst (hence up now). I keep swapping between the sofa and my bed and having to change into dry PJs each time 😭

Frumpitydoo · 06/01/2026 03:27

You need garlic, thyme, oregano. I'd throw in tumeric, ginger, honey and cayenne pepper too, for good measure (take seperate, together, as tea, whatever, but vast quantities, especially garlic and thyme.
I'd also stock up on lemons, limes, oranges and peppers for vitamin c and eucalyptus and tea tree oil for inhalations (add to a bowl of boiling water and salt, shove a towel over your head and steam that bastard out!

Easy/ready meals for your son, soup for you, so you aren't labouring when you should be resting.

Chocolate and a bag of ice cubes to soothe your throat, chew whole cloves for throat pain relief and invest in a bottle of Ultra Chloraseptic.

Get on Insta for some healing frequencies and play them wgile you rest.

From a single mother to another, go into battle hard here, good luck and get well soon dear!

Oh its been handing around our house since the kids broke up two weeks ago
I woke up Sunday with blocked nose and stratchy throat
Now I'm awake cos I have the worst earache ever 😫 been sat crying for the past hour
Definitely stock up on paracetamol and easy going meals

HoratioBum · 06/01/2026 03:50

Loads, and I mean LOADS, of Vitamin C. Take at least 5000 mg a day. You pee out the excess so you can’t take too much. Really helps me when the lurgy starts and it normally gives me a blast of energy about 24 hours after the first batch.
Raw ginger with honey and lemon, drink as much as you like in boiling water.
Night Nurse to knock you out so you can sleep.
Steam to loosen the inevitable blocked nose if you suffer from sinusitis.
Hot baths, as hot as you can stand
Hot toddies with honey and whiskey
Chloraseptic for your throat
That stuff you squirt up your nose at the first sign of a cold ( though sounds like you may be too far gone for this step)
Basically you need to assault your body with heat and vitamins, along with as much pain relief and liquids as you need.

Good luck, I had it over Christmas!

It’s brutal this year - does nobody have a flu jab? It’s definitely taken it from flu to bad cold symptoms in most people apparently

Feelinfluey · 06/01/2026 04:19

Thanks for the tips!
yes I think I probably will get a delivery. Good idea.
I wish it was only one DS to consider, but there’s 3 of the buggers! Older 2 are off to their dads tomorrow for 2 nights, but I’ll still have the youngest who’s 3, until Saturday am. He’s not one to let you nap, as you can imagine! So it’ll be ALL the screen time for him.

Get the flu jab. That’s the way to prep especially if you have young kids.

Ffs get food delivered. Im contagious, I know il go to a place full of people for my own selfish reasons.

Ophir · 06/01/2026 04:56

A saline nasal spray like the first defence one might help stave off symptoms. I read a reports about this recently and tried it myself when an ominously scratchy throat hit.

I get a flu jab too though my kids are much older but no point saying that now!

fingers crossed for you @Feelinfluey

I’m in the exact same position day one throat, buzzing ears jaw ache and about to go down!

I did so much work today knowing I wasn’t feeling right, my son who’s 21 has it but he’s been up and about so not bed bound just feeling rough and sleeping lots with a bit of a temp so I’m praying have his level of immunity.

I’ve got my ginger honey, first defence, lemsips and tomorrow I’ll send DH for the night nurse as I haven’t slept tonight.

Easy meals (ready made).
Snacks the toddler can reach, buy some pre pared fruit or veg if you can and put on bottom shelf of fridge,
Dont panic if toddler misses out on “proper” food for a meal or two, As long as they are fed.
Paracetamol and some ibuprofen (if you can take) to alternate to help keep any temps down, eg 10am para, midday ibuprofen, 2pm, para etc, but remembering the max doses per 24 hrs for each. And I’ve no idea what that is, sorry!
Plenty if tissues close by and plastic bags to use as bins to throw away after each tissue has been used.
Make sure a trusted family member or friend has a key for your house and agree to check in with them over the phone morning and evening.
Paper and pen close by listing when you’ve had your meds (easy to get confused especially if you have to administer any to child too).
Buy some individual bottled water to keep next to sofa and bed so you do t have to move to keep hydrated
Get the chargers close by so any screen time can be increased without hassle.
Get some kids books and toys nearby wherever you decide to camp out.
Get some ice pops (great for the throat pain).
Good luck!

I had the flu jab in October but have been in bed with this flu thing since last Wednesday.

Think I’ve included all this in the Asda order. I’m hoping that because I’ve just spent £40 on all this, it’ll mean I won’t need it. Like taking an umbrella out with you, then it doesn’t rain! I can hope…

I feel for you. I started with it on 20th Dec and only just started to feel human yesterday. It’s been awful.
plenty of fluids and rest when you can. Just eat what you can. I think I lived off
toast and butter!

FirstdatesFred · 06/01/2026 06:39

You might be ok, fingers crossed. Mine was lurking after dd was ill but I've managed to keep it at bay, just feeling worse at night but feel better today.

Also I had a flu jab booked in November but boots cancelled because they'd run out 🙁

Oneisnotamused · 06/01/2026 06:43

Seriously people - get the flu jab. You will have a bad cold rather than a week in bed crawling to the toilet.

Nugg · 06/01/2026 07:13

TheFairyCaravan · 06/01/2026 06:00

I had the flu jab in October but have been in bed with this flu thing since last Wednesday.

It certainly doesn’t cover all strains - sorry you’ve been so unwell. But most people with flu have not had the jab and this year it’s been so widely promoted as so many children are spreading it and coming down with it.

Inthefuturenow · 06/01/2026 07:18

Might not be flu. I had a bad cold followed by a 5 week cough and the Dr said it was COVID, says his whole family had just had it and it was presenting as a bad cold followed by a long lasting cough this winter. I now have pneumonia and pleurisy and am on antibiotics and steroids. He said flu came and went early this year and they're seeing much more COVID.
