I’m about to be taken down by the flu…

So, I’ve had my DC in my bed since Saturday am. High temp, coughing, snotting, sneezing, all within inches of me. He hasn’t moved out of bed other than to use the bathroom-very unlike him, so I know he feels rough af!
He asked me for a drink about 2 hours ago, and I can’t get back to sleep… headache, scratchy throat. I’d say it’s inevitable that I’m now getting his lurgy.
How can I prep for this? I’ve got paracetamol in the house already. Just curious how other people(with kids/single parent) manage it(and when to call a priest 😂

Ugh, it feels like everyone is getting knocked over by one bug or another at the moment.
I’ve just started using this ginger-turmeric honey and it's delish. I’m actually a bit obsessed with it now.
I’ve been stirring a spoon into hot water when I wake up and it’s really comforting – especially if I feel a bit coldy. Also tastes really nice in my porridge when I have that.

First Defence really does work! It kept me going when everyone around me was dropping like flies! Unfortunately you do have to keep using it throughout plague season. I buy 2 in late autumn and keep one in the car.

My nearly 2 year old has had 3 really bad bouts of nursery lurgy since the start of December - weeks of 40 degree fever, coughing, sneezing, snotting on everything. We share a bed and she is insanely clingy - always has her hands in my mouth, her face in mine. So far I haven’t progressed beyond a sore throat and being absolutely shattered. I have had the flu jab, I drink nothing but Berocca, and I’m also a single mother… there just isn’t an option to be ill!

PerkySnail · 07/01/2026 23:00

Me and DH have had it 4 weeks ago. It was awful 😖 I ended up on antibiotics as throat was so painful with earache! I have recovered but my throat is so dry and painful still when I swallow.
Drink plenty of fluids and try oregano oil capsules and turmeric tablets. If you don't have turmeric tablets try the powdered stuff. You can get this from the supermarket. Put a teaspoon in some hot milk and add honey. It's really good for inflammation.

I’m on day three, ringing ears, sore throat, cold, cough.. it’s like every single symptom all at once, I have random back ache and my neck and head hurts!!

please make it all stop.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 08/01/2026 01:27

I’ve had the flu jab - about 3 weeks ago so my resistance should be at its peak, but I’m very ill in bed with an awful cough, low fever, nasty chest, streaming nose and eyes and swollen glands since Saturday. Pretty sure it’s Adenovirus rather than Flu, which is also rife at the moment.

I’m wondering, might have missed this in posts, whether your child had the flu vaccine via school/gp, if you’re in the UK. It’s recommended and lessens the severity of symptoms or helps the child avoid it completely. Adults can buy a vaccination from pharmacies if they aren’t eligible for a free one.

Delatron · 08/01/2026 08:49

It‘s a no brainer for me to get the jab.
can’t remember the cost around £20 in Boots? I’m self employed so lose a lot more money than that if I can’t work.

Kids have the flu jab at school. I do think it all helps.

Pleased they actually did it earlier in schools this year. Should really be September, latest October.

Off to now stock up on First Defence!

It’s brutal this year - does nobody have a flu jab? It’s definitely taken it from flu to bad cold symptoms in most people apparently

Reading this, I suspect this is us. We’ve all had the flu jab, DCs included, as DS has had blue lights with viral wheeze in the past. We have a bad cold that feels like it wants to be flu, so I’m hoping that means the jab is doing its job. Whisky toddies to everyone suffering with it. That’s what I did last night!

SpringGreensAgain · 08/01/2026 09:33

I had the flu jab last autumn (£15 in Asda) and although I’ve now come down with flu (thanks to my DC) I’m not feeling too awful. Cold and achey, with a very sore throat. I only know I have flu because I did an influenza lateral flow test - I’d bought one a year back - and it showed I have Influenza B. That’s the milder one, apparently. So here's hoping it stays mild!

When I’ve had flu before - only 3 times in my life, afaik - it completely floored me, so this is working out better so far!

As long as it doesn't make you too woozy and dont have any history of addiction I would recommend over the counter co codamol will help with the sleep side of things and is good for a cough (if you have one)

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 08/01/2026 20:45

You xan avoid it next year by paying for a flu jab in October. For now, paracetamol, or over the counter flu treatment. Plenty of fluids.

starmoonsun · 08/01/2026 20:45

Nurophen cold and flu. Felt I something coming and my dd has been Ill for a week. Took morning and night and it stayed manageable and went after about 5 days, just the blocked nose lingered.

notcomfortable · 08/01/2026 21:36

Any tips for easing ear infection pain? 😓 miserable but can't get a Dr's appointment
My ear has a heartbeat and whooshing and ringing
My throat is scratchy, my nose blocked and a fever
I'm so over this

I think it mutated after the vaccines were prepared.

Hope everyone's on the mend. A lot of people coming to work looking like they've been dug up. The fear is real.

Can't you use something like Whoosh instead of going yourself?

Exactly! Stay at home!!!
