Feel a bit mean, but so excited for tomorrow

Dh back to work
Dc back to school

I am the type who normally feels sad holidays are over and kids are back and so on, but this holiday hasn’t been great and I cannot wait for 9 am tomorrow.
I intend to stop at the shop for treats and spend until pick up watching Netflix shows…blissfully alone! (aside from the dogs-who are no trouble)

I book the first day at work of the new year off just to have to myself and unwind. Tomorrow I will run myself a bath and then read my new book in front of the fire. My belated Christmas gift to myself yet again lol

and what about the poor, starving children in Africa too. Come on, OP, read the room and show the appropriate level of misery in sympathy

Except OP will be on here complaining in a few years about seeking work mid 50's and working until 67 years.
it's hard. It's all hard.
Full time work when your kids are little (me with 3 since twins were 5 months). it's hard.
work when you're 67 years. It's hard.
choose your hard!
I'm out the gap at age 55 (6 years time) with defined benefit scheme (teacher).
will suffer OPs kids tomorrow (not as smug as OP) ... and bide my time.

I’m dreading it. DD will be flapping about trying to get organised and will somehow decide it’s all my fault she’s running late.

DS hates school, and will employ every delaying tactic he can think of to avoid getting ready and will be late, making us late as we have to take him to his (specialist) school.

I’m back up to my full hours after reduced hours as part of phased return from long term sickness (cancer) and I don’t know how I am going to cope.

Maybe it will be a snow day?

moltac · 04/01/2026 20:15

I am looking forward to a day to myself on Tuesday, DH is working from home tomorrow and I am taking down the decorations and cleaning but come Tuesday it will be a blissful day to just suit myself!

SkipTheIntro · 04/01/2026 20:18

You say it’s not been a good holiday so YANBU to want it over.

I loved the holidays when my kids were young and hated when they went back, but I do remember one where we just had lots going on and part of me was probably relieved when they went back as it was easier to deal with what we had going on.

My oldest two are now at uni but don’t go back for a couple of weeks and youngest is at college and goes back this week. I am making the most of the time we have. My partner and I work from home so it’ll be back to being us and the animals soon which is nice but I do love having everyone home more.

I used to feel like that every Sunday evening knowing my ex would be going to work in the morning and I wouldn't have to deal with his nonsense 😆. This was before I had my son, but I worked from home. Now it's just me and my son, and our home is happy and peaceful, so I don't feel that way any more - but I definitely know what you mean!

PinkyFlamingo · 04/01/2026 20:21

Do you work OP?

Authorperson · 04/01/2026 20:24

Husband just announced he's not working tomorrow after all (weather based work, self employed)

I could weep

Clefable · 04/01/2026 20:24

This was almost me, I do work but evenings so I get my days to myself during term time, but schools and nurseries closed due to snow! So I have them both at home again. Oh well. At least no trying to get out of the house early doors for another day!

Even the dog and the cat have been pests here.

Don’t feel bad! I remember when our kids were teenagers and going away with the school. Bus was leaving at midnight and after saying our fond farewells, the bus pulled away and we all waved. As it turned the corner, every parent leapt in the air and cheered. You’re just wanting a bit of down time. It’s not like wishing them all to go away forever!

I don't understand this post, are you saying that because the OP is not working tomorrow that she doesn't have a job?

I've a day off tomorrow - an extra day's holiday. I work full time.

SqishySqashmas · 04/01/2026 18:06

OP do you not realise that a large majority of people reading this will in fact be going back to work having had very little break at all.

So what?? She’s allowed to be happy!!

NoWinnersOnlyLosers · 04/01/2026 20:46

Me too OP. Only mine start Tuesday 😅

You seem confused about the concept of diversity of views

She clearly doesn't work full time and so

I think she's a drain on society and smug about it thus unreasonable

How do you know I don’t? How the hell do you know anything about my work life?? Just because I am at home alone tomorrow for 6 hours

I work in a busy supermarket and have worked every weekend for the past six weeks, Christmas Eve, New Years and every day/ evening or night they could possibly have me. know I’m using it as an argument here but I don’t say to my friends who are pissed off tomorrow that actually they at least got to have a bit more breathing space or time to get ready over Christmas!! Who cares if op works or is a sahm!!! Enjoy op!! (I will be cleaning tomorrow for my day off but will definitely have some me time first!!)

This does not mean she can't enjoy her day off or be excited to have a day for herself?

Oh no you can't possibly work or have ever worked a day in your life because, you know, you have tomorrow off. Some people are just miserable scrooges all year round. Enjoy tomorrow!

FunkyMonks · 04/01/2026 20:54

Sounds like heaven sadly I won’t get that joy until Tuesday as my DCs school has inset on Monday and I’m also back in work on Tuesday myself but enjoy OP I don’t blame you.
