What do you wear on a long flight?

Do you dress up for a flight somewhere? I've heard it's bad form to wear a tracksuit (like I do). Quite honestly if I'm flying for hours on end then everything I'm wearing is going to be elasticated.
I'm not going to sit there in a suit with high heels on.

Velour tracksuit, comfortable shoes, uncrushable overcoat that will survive being shoved into an overhead locker. I always assume flight may be delayed, so supply myself with plenty of reading material. Oh, and always start out with a panty liner and put a spare in my bag, so if I am delayed I don't feel like I'm wearing stale knickers, also a mini deodorant body spray for a quick underarm freshen up if delayed.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 04/01/2026 14:47

Normally a jumpsuit.

Crispychillifriedbeef · 04/01/2026 14:50

On an overnight flight I get changed into the pajamas they give out.

Justputsomeyoghurtonit · 04/01/2026 14:55

I'm doing 10hrs to somwhere very cold next month.

I'm wearing loose cuffed yoga pants leggings press on stomach too much and cause bloating). With a comfy bra, vest, long sleeve tshirt and oversized cashmere jumper as I don't have enough luggage allowance to pack it. Plus I'll be carrying a full length wool coat for when I arrive. And trainers, with sliders for when I'm on the plane.

My grandparents used to dress up for their holiday flights to Spain. This was in the 60s when working class people being able to fly abroad was a very big deal.

It did used to be a thing 20/30 years ago that if you dressed smart, you might get an upgrade. An urban myth.

Being as comfortable as possible on a plane has been more of a thing for quite some time. Think neck pillows…people have been using them for years. Being comfortable is also important healthwise.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 04/01/2026 15:00

From a safety perspective you should wear long trousers , long sleeves. Flat, closed shoes that are held onto your feet (ie no heels, slides, flip flops, sandals) Jeans not the best choice as they get very heavy when wet. You’ll thank yourself if there’s an accident and you’re dressed sensibly in a way that doesn’t hinder your efforts to get off the plane wreck.

honestly tho - who can be bothered dressing up on a plane? Even when I’m on a short flight for work I change into business attire when I get off the plane and into my comfy clothes for the return journey.

wthisgooing · 04/01/2026 15:04

If long haul in economy I will wear sports leggings and a hoody, short haul I will dress normally. I dress smarter for business class (not overly though, last time I wore black sweat joggers with a cardigan). I wouldn’t ever wear a track suit outside the house.

PiggieWig · 04/01/2026 15:07

How are you all getting changed onboard?!

I wear jersey trousers, vest/-shirt, cardi and trainers.

bridgetreilly · 04/01/2026 15:11

Jersey dress over leggings. With extra layers as appropriate for either end of the journey.

I fly to Australia annually but then do two internal flights straight away. So in the air about 36 plus hours. I wear light weight navy blue jersey harem pants, a baby blue long sleeve T-shirt plus a navy sweater and poncho. Plus socks and slip on shoes. I use pantry liners with extras in my bag and I gave wet wipes and dry shampoo for Hugo. For me the same colours look more put together and I make heavy use of the litttravel toiletries.

DelinquentSnails · 04/01/2026 15:20

Just flown from Australia. I wore Sweaty Betty explorer trousers, a soft t-shirt, Sweaty Betty after class cropped sweatshirt (I like the thumbholes) and white trainers. My 4 teens were a vision in head to toe soft jersey/ graphic t-shirts. No dressing up here. Comfort all the way.

We sat near an older couple wearing Panama hats, linen blazers, bright chinos, white shorts and Tod’s driving shoes. They looked lovely but we were definitely comfier!

vanillalattes · 04/01/2026 15:22

Leggings, a loose-fitting t-shirt and a jumper or hoody. Anything comfortable, basically!

olderbutwiser · 04/01/2026 15:26

Also aircraft and customer service used to be quite luxurious, so dressing up felt appropriate. Now we're crammed in, barely watered let alone fed, and hearded around like cattle. Comfort all the way.

FWIW when motorway service stations first opened people used to dress nicely to go there for Sunday Lunch.

Back in the Olden Days, of course.

Harrietsgirl · 04/01/2026 15:31

I mentally judge people wearing First Class p.j.'s in Business Class.
I've always worn at least one item from Primark on the handful of times I've flown First
Always dress for comfort.
No high heels....... if I ever get the experience of exiting via the emergency slide I want the ability to run like crazy once I'm on the ground..... so it's trainers for me.

User0311 · 04/01/2026 15:39

Comfies always! I’m a terrified flier the least I can do is be comfortable in what I’m wearing

You can do an awful lot standing on one leg in the toilet.

Also we flew first in BA London to Sydney once. The toilets were double the size, had a window and a vase of flowers.

lonelylavenders · 04/01/2026 12:23

Who told you it was bad form?

my mother in 1991?

Lol, Dsis who flies everywhere. She lives abroad and says she gets upgrades when she dresses well. But the again she is built like a model and would look great in a bin bag.....unlike me. Id make Chanel look cheap.

There’s a whole spectrum of looks between a tracksuit and a business suit and heels.

CakeKiller · 04/01/2026 16:04

For long longhaul (think Australia or west coast US) I'd always choose nice jogging bottoms or yoga trousers but always ones that are cuffed or narrower towards the ankle. Never wide leg as they're more likely to come in contact with the toilet floor!

user2848502016 · 04/01/2026 16:10

Last time I went I wore wide legged black trousers and a matching t shirt (both jersey cotton material, elasticated waist trousers), with a long waterfall cardigan and slip on trainers on my feet (easy to get off and on on the plane).
I wouldn’t “dress up” as such but go for comfortable layers, a tracksuit is fine if that’s what you’re comfortable in.

AlexaBeQuiet · 04/01/2026 16:16

In the airport and lounge I wear smart jeans, boots or white trainers, a shirt and a blazer.
On the plane I will change into Sweaty Betty Yoga Pants and a long sleeved tee shirt. I’ll have a large scarf in my bag too if cold and also use the bedding and socks provided.
When I land I put my jeans and shirt back on with some clean underwear from my bag. If it’s a really late flight I sometimes shower, put the Yoga Pants and tee on in the lounge bathroom, and cleanse and moisturise my face to save doing it on the plane.

idontwanttomissathing · 04/01/2026 16:51

I wear yoga leggings and top. I change on the plane though to fit the climate of where I’m flying to. Don’t want to be sweating hot in India or freezing cold in Canada!

luckylavender · 04/01/2026 16:53

Generally jeans, t shirt and sweatshirt

MisterT373 · 04/01/2026 17:19

I have a lucky cotton shirt which I refer to as "The Shirt of Death" which i wear for all flights. Its a chequered pattern which concels the inevitable food spillages. A couple of flights ago I spilled a cup of Coca Cola down it & you couldnt tell.
I've had it for 20 years & its getting old & I'm looking for a replacement but its hard to find a cotton shirt with a suitable pattern & colour.
