What do you wear on a long flight?

Do you dress up for a flight somewhere? I've heard it's bad form to wear a tracksuit (like I do). Quite honestly if I'm flying for hours on end then everything I'm wearing is going to be elasticated.
I'm not going to sit there in a suit with high heels on.

Have you see many people flying long haul in a suit and high heels ?? I certainly haven’t. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in yourself, most people do the same.

Trackie bottoms, cotton top and cashmere jumper. I make sure I have a scarf and coat to hand as I usually get freezing cold on long haul flights.

Leggings, tee-shirt and jumper normally,

It used to be many years ago you might get upgraded if you looked smart, dont think thats a thing now.

DS is a frequent flyer for work. He always wears a suit and often gets upgraded. He recently broke his foot and flew in joggers and a foot brace. Not upgraded this time, despte actually needing the extra leg room. So it can still happen (though I have tried and it doesn't happen for me Grin

If I was flying economy I’d wear leggings, a t shirt and jumper.

But if I was paying a fortune to fly business or first, I’d wear leggings, a t shirt and jumper.

Loose dress with optional soft jacket/cardigan & tights for warmth if needed

This. I find a loose dress more comfortable than any trousers.

endofagain · 04/01/2026 13:38

Jersey wide leg trousers with elasticated waist, Tshirt or vest top, loose fitting jacket/cardigan. I take comfortable flat sandals/slip ons to change into when I get to the airport. Everything non-crease. Usually there will be a small blanket provided.

TidyCyan · 04/01/2026 13:40

Sweaty Betty power leggings, long thin hoodie over any top, heaviest shoes (usually trainers).

So is my DH and he wears jeans and a hoodie. He has a lot of air miles/higher rank loyalty cards which I suspect is more to do with it!

I have been fortunate enough to fly Virgin upper class several times for work trips and I have never seen anyone in heels or a suit. In fact many board and immediately change into pjs if it’s an overnight flight. In BA long haul business you get a mix of attire but honestly, I flew with a senior colleague who looked so scruffy and yet I know his outfit would have been head to toe Dior costing more than my first car!

That’s usually what I wear. Recently, I wore some wide jersey side stripes with a vest and a thin cardigan. Very comfortable, but keeping them off the loo floor was a challenge.

Yep, that's almost certainly the case.

These days if an airline needs to upgrade it's more likely done on the basis of points rather than appearance, though even so a very high points owner turning up in gardening clothes might get marked down as "not suitable for upgrade"...

Charlenedickens · 04/01/2026 13:53

Do you not fly very much or did you go ott on the hyperbole with the suit and high heels comment? No one wears that to fly. Wear what you want, most people wear some form of athleisure clothing.

Upgrades for all airlines are based on loyalty points First off then ticket price. It is not done on how you dress.

mindutopia · 04/01/2026 13:54

I dress like I would for work. Nice jeans, nice top, cardigan for layers, normal shoes (boots or flats unless I specifically need to wear the shoes I need for travel on my feet; for example, hiking holiday and I need to wear walking boots because no room in bag).

I don’t wear tracksuits or lounge wear or my pyjamas, no. But I don’t wear those at home either, other than pyjamas to bed (but never for lounging around the house).

Pllystyrene · 04/01/2026 13:56

Last long haul I wore some super comfortable Harem style trousers from next, a loose top, a.soft jumper and my Birkenstocks. ( With flight socks once on the plane) My teenagers wore tracksuits, before changing to PJ bottoms on the plane. I'm not really an everyday day tracksuit person but if I was I wouldn't have an issue wearing one.

Fluffypiki · 04/01/2026 13:58

DD (20) just did London / Melbourne in track suit bottoms and hoodie and good for her! 25 hours? Wear whatever make you feel good while respecting everyone around you (I mean a sport bra might be comfortable for you but perhaps not the people around you?)

5128gap · 04/01/2026 14:00

Gym leggings, vest top, hoodie and trainers. Never once been stopped at the plane door and told I don't meet the dress code so I'm not getting in.

Possibly referring to this article

https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/airport-fashion-dress-up-sean-duffy-dress-code-b2882704.html

many airlines

have basic decency dress codes

some american wants more

The article mentions returning to "the golden age of air travel in the 50s and 60s". No problem. When airlines go back to having enough leg room and serve every passenger regardless of their ticket tier complimentary coffee and snacks, I shall make an effort and wear a pill hat.

Tina46 · 04/01/2026 14:05

I fly UK-Australia and back once a year - always comfy and casual. Leggings or similar, baggy shirt, then something easy to take on and off such as a cardigan, zip up hoody or soft denim shirt / similar. Always shoes than can slide on and off easily with compression socks. And I always take clean underwear and top x 2... I usually shower at the stopover destination if it's 2 or more hours, then like to freshen just before landing. It's also handy having spares in your carry-on in case your main case is delayed.

Beekman · 04/01/2026 14:07

Wide leg soft pants, a long tee and a hoodie or other sweatshirt. Hoka trainers. This is whether I am in business or economy.

Upgrades these days are based on your status in the airline’s frequent flyer program, not whether you’re wearing a suit. Some people do dress up a bit for a flight and they can’t be comfortable.

I had to run to catch a connecting flight the other day and I made it. Had I been wearing heels, I would have missed the doors.

Celestialmoods · 04/01/2026 14:19

I once did a long haul journey with three stops, wearing a tracksuit. I had a woman in the queue for the last plane behind me loudly complaining to her partner about how disrespectful it was for people to look scruffy on flights and how sad it was that people didn’t dress up anymore. She was very dressed up in some kind of national costume, but she was only doing a one hour journey so it was ok for her! Rude bitch.

OttersMayHaveShifted · 04/01/2026 14:29

I always find these threads weird. Just wear normal clothes you're comfortable in. No need to be especially smart. No need to wear specially extra-comfortable clothes unless your normal casual clothes are uncomfortable for some unknown reason. I'd wear jeans, a t-shirt and a jumper or hoodie.

littlezozo · 04/01/2026 14:34

I have done quite a few long haul. And I swell up all over. And cant wear anything thats going to dig in. So I wear a cotton jumpsuit that has stretch . With a cropped baggy jumper for when its a bit chilly. A maternity bra with no bones. Large cotton knickers. And baseball trainers so I can lossen them as my feet swell to melons

Beekman · 04/01/2026 14:34

It’s funny coz I find jeans quite comfortable in every day life but on a long haul flight, they feel like some sort of medieval torture garment.

i don’t understand shorts on a plane (who wants someone’s hairy leg near theirs) but as long as you’re clean, who cares?

I'm only here for the "crisp white shirt"
